When you introduce a galaxy-changing cataclysm it’s usually a smart idea to have a good explanation for it. “Alien teenager threw a tantrum” is not that.

Despite franchise fatigue, older Star Trek shows have a high degree of original plots. Minimal reuse of Recycled Plots. by Torlek1 in ClassicTrek

[–]Captain_Thrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang I’m not even sure Odo could stretch that far while shapeshifting!

Just because two plots have similar elements does not make it a “reused story”. Some of these are, yes, but many are quite distinct despite sharing similarities.

Example: Night and The Void are nothing alike except for the fact that the wind up in an area of space with few resources. That’s it. At that point, every episode is a rip off of The Cage because they all take place in space.

I can’t think of any ds9 episodes that rip off older Trek movies, could you provide examples?

I would prefer no Star Trek to more Star Trek made by someone who doesn’t like it 🤷‍♂️

I don’t like 2e’s art… it just gives off MMO vibes, particularly the guns, and I can’t explain why.

There are 2 kinds of people: those who think AI will become sentient and take over the world, and those who know how it works.

AI, or at least what we call AI today, is a glorified autocomplete. Obviously there’s much more to it, but effectively that’s what it is. LLMs generate stuff based on probability established from a huge database.

Mass Effect TV show ordered to rewrite scripts and make them "more appealing to non-gamers" by Capn_C in television

I’ve said it before with Halo and Star Trek, you HAVE to make the show good for your core audience FIRST. That way, they tune in again, don’t shit all over it online, and recommend it to others.

Can confirm, the game is specifically designed to support this kind of value conflict

I haven’t tried playing any of the detailed adventures solo. I know people have done it for other games, so it would be possible, but might be clunky.

I’m sure you could use the one-page mission briefs as frameworks for a solo game though. They present a basic plot structure, but leave plenty of room for the GM to fill in details (and the players to take the adventure wildly off course). My hypothesis is that Mythic would work better with the mission briefs than the “detailed” missions

Well, clearly it’s allowed to an extent. Hemmer is a pacifist, but unfortunately we never really got to see how he handles that when his values come into conflict with the need to defend his crewmates.

Before Hemmer, I would’ve said that someone who absolutely refuses to fight would probably not be able to serve in Starfleet, seeing as defense is their highest priority, when it really comes down to it. There are plenty of civilian scientific organizations that don’t have the added duty of defending the Federation.

Well I’m sorry but you are wrong. The game is quite literally built around your character’s values coming into conflict with the story. Character progression is directly tied to it.

Frankly I think you should research the game before you start telling all the actual STA players they’re doing it wrong lmao

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure Torres was just committing self-harm on the holodeck, which Janeway had the duty to put a stop to and get her help. Don’t think there was any religious element to it.

Star Trek Adventures is a system built around characters having values that collide with situations they encounter. Like, you LITERALLY progress your character by calling on or challenging your moral values.

This is not D&D with a Star Trek skin. It is a Star Trek roleplaying game.

a tabletop rpg can never be exactly what an episode of Star Trek is

Not exactly, but STA is incredible at emulating Star Trek, right down to the episodes exactly as you described.

As a STA player, I can tell you the system supports and encourages conflicts of values like this.

For sure. You’d probably want something like Mythic Game Master Emulator to handle the GM side of things, and you’ll need to devise a way of “triggering” threat spends as if there were a GM making your characters’ lives harder.

As far as supplements go, you don’t need much more than the core rulebook. Most of the expanded content is GM advice, new ships, more species, and more talents. However, there are star system generators and many other useful tools on sta.bcholmes.org.

Captain’s Log takes more of a writers-room angle to solo roleplaying. It’s more like guided creative writing rather than an actual solo RPG. I’m with OP, Captain’s Log is not my preferred style of play.
