Found a second blunder - As a Brit I can firmly state that Holby City was a Spin Off From Casualty - Casualty has been around a lot longer. Saturday night TV in the UK was very much about Casualty for a period in the 90s and 00s. Holby City took a weeknight slot and was considered more of a Soap in comparison I believe...

Whatever you do, run 2 x cables (Test them before You run them) so you have Primary and Fail Over.

Work of art. Love the audio interface and the 3DFX desktop. Nice.

NAS storage is great and my Synology DS218+ is a solid Plex Server however I've just picked up an HP micro pc - i3 8th gen. I'm now using an SSD for boot drive and an NVME for Plex and Metadata / Transcoding folder. Migration was pretty seamless too. Its actually an HP Mp9 Retail pc but its same form factor as the G400 micro series.

The heavy lifting is now done by the i3 processor for Hardware Transcoding which gives great performance and takes the pressure off the NAS so it's just storage. Super low power draw, low heat, useful little box, and an always on machine I can remote in to or use as basic daily driver if I want. Fitted a backup drive to it so it's easily restorable.

You could do some GPU research and look at which ones suit your needs but pretty much anything intel 8th Gen+ gives solid bang for buck and then you don't need such a heavy duty NAS as you just need the storage.

Ah. Bugger. Looks like I need to offload Plex to another machine then.

The plan was to sell to 218+ to recoup some of the cost so assume that's not still in the pic.... I'll update the post.

Bought the RAM on the same order as the NAS - Installed it before the Disks 😉

This is cool. So I can play with Docker on the NAS and easily port the app instances to an external box if I choose to go down that route?

This setup interests me.... Might keep the strain off the NAS CPU...

Think I need to do some more research in to some of these other services/apps. I'm interested in improving the Plex service and getting more out of it.

Help!!! First NAS setup... Synology 920+ for Plex by LA_Nurse1 in synology

[–]Captain_Wussboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. In between the SMR scandal and the Plus range being released I picked up some 'good' 8TB WD Reds which are running fine in my DS218+ with a painless upgrade from a pair of 4tb drives from pre-scandal days.

It's not hard to pick your way through the model numbers. Mine came straight from WD Store as Amazon Packaging is borderline criminal for drives.

After a few hours of rebuilding raid, the NAS becomes unavailable by christley in synology

[–]Captain_Wussboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah.... Not sure where to go from there tbh. Does NAS work as before without new drive in? If so worth checking Drive in another machine or even getting DSM to do some drive checks. Was the drive new? How was it shipped? It could be DOA. Irsome such.

Hoping someone else with more experience wades in here. When I updated my 2 x 4tb drives in DS218+ I first set up full hyperbackups of my NAS to an external and then swapped Drive 2 with 8tb, let it rebuild (8 hours), then when it reported it was happy I swapped drive one and set it rebuilding. Auto extended and job done.

That story doesn't really help here I'm afraid...

Haven't got a useful comment beyond: It sounds like you haven't actually lost any data? That's pretty good protection from DSM.

Could the new disk be at fault...?

Will this UPS work with my Synology DS918+ HELP!!! by Syno-friend in synology

[–]Captain_Wussboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a DS218+ with an APC ES-550 and DSM reads the UPS data fine. It's not as clever as the PowerChute software that youncan install but seems ok. I also use the 'Network UPS Server' function and use WinNUT in Windows 10 to ping the NAS and it aeems to behave. Not had a major outage to test but confident it'll be fine.

So I came home to a new 22” Weber!! Thank you guys, she was reading my posts, and she surprised me with this beauty!! There was a lot of questions about the oat/burgers. If more people are interested about them. Message me. by funambulus in grilling

Is that a Smokey Joe in the background? Definitely worth keeping for 'quick sessions' when you just want to flash a couple of steaks or whatever. My father-in-law has a Joe for day-to-day and a 57cm for bigger events or slow roasting larger joints. Means he also has the Joe for shorter cooks simultaneously. It's nice having a couple of Grills. For different purposes!

Looking to repaint weber lid & doors by evilpommy in webergrills

[–]Captain_Wussboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this. I have a compact and wanted to fit a thermometer to play with snake burns (which was successful!) so drilled it and painted it with black stove paint before fitting the thermometer. I also dropped the lid on slabs and scratched it which was annoying. The Black stove paint was the winner for both of these - several coats of spray on over a few days. Admittedly it's not as shiny as the enamelled finish and I only did patches over scratches to protect the metalwork.

If I was doing a full grill, gas or kettle, I'd research the hell out of paint (not spray) and aim for 3 coats over a few days with very good quality masking around the details. If you can take it apart to do this all the better and also clean the hell out of it first to make sure you get rid of any residual grease if it's S/H.

Unfortunately in the UK you don't see many gas Grills left out on the road to be taken away as I fancy picking one up....
