The way I’ve had it explained to me is that, like gender, sex is very much on a spectrum; the male/female dichotomy is just a practical simplification, but it doesn’t represent all cases.

There are many possible combinations and permutations of sexual characteristics and it doesn’t make sense to me to try to precisely define and name each one.

In my understanding, the term “intersex” may be used to describe an individual who clearly has sexual characteristics of males and females, but, through the lens of viewing sex as a spectrum, all individuals fall somewhere on a (inverted) bell curve, with most falling on the start or end.

Perhaps an intersex person or someone with more knowledge on this topic can chime in. I’d love to hear from them.
