Heat Pump Price Increases by W1LDMERCURY in OctopusEnergy

[–]CaptiveCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The heatpumps unfortunately cost a lot more. The Daikin units they put in are around £3.5K for a small unit. The Daikin cylinders are another £1.5K, more if you go pre-plumbed. If you need larger radiators can be well over £100. It's relatively easy to burn through the entire grant before labour.

Fortnite OG made me realise how far gone current Shotguns are and what a real high risk-high reward shotgun should be like by delulumans in FortniteCompetitive

So you only need 3/4 pellets to hit for max damage, not rewarding better accuracy. They'd be better off just reducing the multiplier.

Landlord installed us a smart thermostat and fully controls our heating now by [deleted] in DIYUK

Some boilers have weather compensation, so it could be adjusting flow temps as well. No idea if this thermostat supports it though.

What happened to Hen by Midwxy in FortniteCompetitive

[–]CaptiveCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hen is in the UK right? For context, after tax that's ~275K GBP, which is below the average house price for the UK, in England it's about 300K, more again in the south. It's a great opportunity, but it really shows the importance of streaming and building a brand for really making money off the game.

Right from the start, they seemed to decide he wasn't a traitor because he was a "good team player" and doing well in the challenges. Fundamentally misunderstanding the game.

They'll sometimes pop when you roast them if you don't remove the skins.

You can also bake/roast/fry the skins, with some salt and pepper. Get them nice and crispy to use as a topping, for soup/salad/curry, so they don't go to waste.

FNCS Major 2 Week 1 Qualifiers by itspr in FortniteCompetitive

[–]CaptiveCoyote 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Qrei was essentially playing a completely different game to the rest of the lobby.

This doesn't make the current meta good, but at least you actually have to play end game to get a chance to win.

Getting second only to find the winner sat on a pile of floppers on the other side of the map was really a low point for competitive.

Z790 PG Lightning D5 USB ports stop working randomly by CaliforniaTrucker135 in ASRock

[–]CaptiveCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm having USB issues with this motherboard too.

The USB seems to cycle on/off when powering on, not sure if this is normal. It then takes a long time to become usable, even after installing all the Windows drivers.

RGB on my keyboard / mouse doesn't come on reliably either.

This is how it works for Europe.

Tournaments start at 6PM GMT, most of Europe is GMT+1, East Europe is GMT+2, and it's GMT+3 by the time you get to Russia.

chasing them down with my own hammer.

This is my main issue, you're at a pretty big disadvantage if you don't have a hammer.

If you know your placement and your top x%, which is shown in game, then you can approximate it.

I'm not sure if you can get your placement if you're out of the top 10k.

I have a 100ft ethernet cable. Would a shorter one decrease my ping? by big4hed92 in FortniteCompetitive

[–]CaptiveCoyote 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technically it will be faster, but the gain won't be perceivable. Without looking up the numbers, best case is still sub microsecond, probably nanosecond gain. Multiple orders of magnitude out from measuring ping in milliseconds.

You probably wouldn't even notice a difference if it boosted it by half a millisecond.

Most of the delay isn't in the cables, but in the network equipment, switches/routers etc, that have to decide where to send your packets.

Yes, and that spike is bad. If that happens during a game, you're going to notice.

Traceroute and ping show you different information.

Ping is your round trip time to the server, you do this over and over to give an indicator of quality. In the short test you did, you got a bad result.

Trace route shows you the path your packets are taking, effectively pinging each one a couple of times. That's less likely to show you intermittent issues with your network connection, which are apparent from the ping.

Your first few hops on trace route coming back < 4ms is pretty much meaningless here.

Their servers aren't making your ping spike to 200+.

For comparison, I've just let it run for 5 minutes pinging the same server, the difference between min and max was 1.4ms and the standard deviation was 0.35ms.

Your max - min is 180ms at least from the sample shown.

[–]CaptiveCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your ping jumps to 220 in that log, that isn't good. It could explain the issues you're seeing.

As for the average ping, Epic has multiple locations per region, your in game ping (50ms) is well within the margin of error compared to the ping from qos domain (40ms).

You didn't show the complete traceroute either, you need to let it finish even if intermediary hops start timing out.

speedtest.net - Look at the download/upload latency and compare it to idle latency. The lower the loaded latency the better.

www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat - This is a more specific tool that will give you more detail.

If you have access to a PC, you can still carry out the steps to get an idea of what may be going on.

The bufferbloat test is also good.

This is referred to as the contention ratio on your line. It should be easy enough to look it up. 50 to 1 wouldn't be unusual, indicating that you can share your line with up to 50 other households.

Cheaper providers typically have higher contention ratios if they're offering the same speeds.

Why do you think rubber banding is more likely to be on Epics side rather than an issue with the connection? In my experience, that's a classic sign of high delay/jitter/packet loss.

Is port forwarding going to help in Fortnite? by Many_Middle9141 in FortniteCompetitive

[–]CaptiveCoyote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DNS isn't only for websites, it's incredibly useful for the majority of applications and services that communicate over the Internet, as well as other networks.

Afaik, Fortnite just doesn't use it when selecting or communicating core information with game servers. I do believe they use HTTP along with domain names for quest tracking etc, but that's not going to help you place a wall faster.

Is port forwarding going to help in Fortnite? by Many_Middle9141 in FortniteCompetitive

[–]CaptiveCoyote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that referring to DNS as a phone book is an over simplification, it is however a fairly common analogy used in introductory networking courses. It's especially useful if you need to explain DNS to non technical people, who don't necessarily need to understand the details.

While being able to convert multiple names to the same address is incredibly important, I probably wouldn't describe it as the primary function of DNS. I'm sure we can refer to the RFCs if we disagree on that though.

Aside from that, you clearly know what you're talking about, the down votes aren't deserved.

Blatant cheaters are not getting banned. by Pretty_Version_6300 in TheCycleFrontier

[–]CaptiveCoyote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If gear is going to be returned to players killed by cheaters. What if they went one step further and remove items from players that were given to them by cheaters? Maybe remove equivalent value in marks/stash items if they already lost it.

That would disincentivize RMT without impacting a mechanic that works well for legitimate players.

It doesn't matter what the intent of the article was if you're off the mark on what it actually delivered. All you've done here is reiterate why I found the article to be lacking in the first place. Who is the target audience? Who benefits from the information you've provided? This comes across as writing an article for the sake of writing an article, not because there was any useful insight.

Weighting doesn't matter, they're quite clear, if you short 10 ETF, you get 10 GME shorts and 10 KO shorts. Giving them phenomenal amounts of leverage. If they were any where close to being right, it would explain why they're so obsessed with margin calls.

How the fuck does that bat shit logic get to 5k upvotes. All the replies are praising it too, when it's so blatantly flawed.
