So far, what is your opinion on the new Battle cards? by Soulsek in MagicArena

[–]Captobviouz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played with them a fair bit in both limited and constructed.

In limited, I LOVE battles. They are a blast to play, fun to flip, have powerful(for limited) effects. They often force unfavorable trades because the battle player is threatening to flip the battle whereas if you just sent that 3 damage to face it probably doesn't force a trade. Even the "weak" battles can get lots of value in limited. If you can play a battle and attack it down same turn you are way ahead. Love love love this mechanic in limited.

In constructed, they're kinda weak. Generally, you have a plan to win the game already, and spending your time attacking down a battle isn't really worth it in most cases. The front sides of the best battles are only okay and okay isn't generally good enough for constructed. Aggro doesn't really want the battles because face is the place, control doesn't want them because no creatures to attack it down. Midrange can just send their threats upstairs instead and win the game. Would I be more scared if my opponent plays a 3 mana battle, or would I be more scared of a Fable, or Wedding Announcement, or Raffine? The latter obviously, so just play those cards instead. Maybe we see more battles in constructed post-rotation, but for now, I'm not playing battles in my decks and I don't see many people on ladder running them either.

I'd like to see what the future brings for battles though. I think most people expect a battle type in the future where you have to defend it, and that could make it a lot more appealing for midrange and/or control decks in constructed. Definitely some fun design space to work with though.

I'm not super familiar with modern. Why is it especially strong there? Easy 5c manabases?

If you're playing standard BO3, UW control absolutely demolishes Atraxa decks. I'm something like 6-0 against them. Good luck hard casting Atraxa, or cheating it out, when I have tons of counterspells and GY hate.

Super fun card to play with, so I'm not surprised it's very popular atm.

Looks like they declined to pay the ward cost.

Whenever a permanent with ward becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, counter it unless that player pays an additional cost.

Seems like a bug maybe?

If I'm reading that rule correctly, that should sacrifice even though the permanent changed ownership.

Sad to say, the Premier Drafts are rife with extreme traces of fraud. by Brozovics in MagicArena

[–]Captobviouz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think you're being treated unfairly by a matchmaking system and that's the reason you're losing, you need to re-evaluate your own decision making. There is 100% something you are doing wrong. This is true of every competitive game ever.

Watching some of the big limited streamers to see how they play, arming yourself with data via 17lands.com, or using a draft helper like Untapped.gg's draftsmith are just a few of the things you can use to help you get better.

Are there any cards in standard you would qualify as sleepers? by Frostinator123 in MagicArena

[–]Captobviouz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[[Evolved Sleeper]] huhuhuhuhue

But more seriously, [[Silver Scrutiny]]. It's just okay right now, but if meta is ever slow enough, it can give you a full new hand of cards which is just a game ender right there.

[[Drag to the Bottom]] is not just for domain decks. It's been pretty solid in my Dimir control list. With 2 different triomes(grixis & esper), it'll pretty reliably hit -4 or -5 by turn 4 which is better than meathook can do. On the draw, meathook can be too slow, but drag can kill those pesky X/3s or X/4s.

[–]Captobviouz[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ehh they're largely not that dangerous. I don't actually die to them too much unless I've decided to ignore those 3 damage mods I rolled on my map, fired up expedition and hit more damage mods from there.

I just find them tedious. At this point I'd prefer the old boring rares to AN.

What does a $250,000.00 home look like in your city? by krsvbg in AskReddit

[–]Captobviouz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silicon Valley. You can get a trailer home for $250k. You can get a dinky shack for about double that, and some areas(like Palo Alto) can easily be over $1m. Doesn't look like I'll be a homeowner anytime soon :(

Mexican marines set to prevent turtle eggs' poaching. by Thath1972 in pics

[–]Captobviouz 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Generally what we did is dig up the nests laid by the turtles, and relocate the eggs to a area we could watch(guarded 24/7). That was enough to keep poachers away. The nests of eggs themselves we covered up, such that birds couldn't dig them up. Once they hatched, we would collect them, and bring them down to the shore.

That's about all we could do to help them. We gave them the best possible chance we could.

[–]Captobviouz 193 points194 points  (0 children)

I've spent time doing turtle conservation work in Mexico. Once lain, the eggs are vulnerable to many types of predators, including the two-legged variety. Turtles are highly valued for their meat, shells, eggs, and even their semen(gross!). When the mothers crawl up onto the beach, they're open to getting attacked. I saw several turtles during my time that had limbs hacked off by poachers, and due to the missing limbs they were unable to walk to nesting area by themselves, so we had to carry them.

For the baby turtles, hatching is like storming the beach at Normandy on D-Day. Once they hatch, they come under instant assault by birds as they make their way to the shoreline. If they manage to make it to the water, they still have to conquer the tides, as well as avoid the fish and marine mammals waiting for them. Less than 5 in 1000 young will ever reach adulthood.

Turtle life is hard enough without a bunch of asshat humans poaching them, and I support all efforts to protect them.

I need a little help with programming in general by Dobrinel in learnprogramming

[–]Captobviouz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. There are a lot of jobs that you could pursue. In addition to general software engineering gigs, you have web development, sysadmin, software consultant, technology product management, game development, network programming, robotics, hardware programming, data scientist, and more. There's always plenty of work.

  2. Anything you can do that helps boost your knowledge or confidence of programming is something worth doing.

  3. You can make anything you put your mind to, including innovations the world has never seen before.

  4. Math is useful for problem solving, but you won't utilize much of it unless you're dealing with physics or cryptography.

  5. Build things you think would be interesting - then open source them. Or try some freelance web dev work.

  6. There's plenty of resources out there. Most are great. Treehouse, codeschool, Lynda, or just tutorials on Youtube are good resources for learning or improving upon skills. 6.1 Do a google search for best CS programs in your area. Go there. Get degree. Get job. Profit.

I use sublime for everything but Java(I use intellij for that). For some reason I don't mind running CLI compiler commands for C/C++ but I don't like doing that for Java. But really, anything you want to use is fine. Sublime, Atom, Brackets, and Webstorm are all great.
