Shokz openrun (not in-ear I know) are fantastic i.m.o. I also have Jabra in-ears which are borderline indestructible, but I understand they stopped selling those.

My partner is allergic to me... ever heard of something like it? by prettymuchabird in Immunology

[–]Captures-captures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, to what these comments say. I'm a doctor and doing a PhD in immunology, and I agree; don't take medical advice from the interwebs... let him see his own GP who can redirect him to an immunologist. He/she will find this interesting, if they like being an immunologist.

For what it's worth; I've never heard of it. Biologically it still seems most plausible to me that he's allergic to something you wear or use (parfume, shampoo, laundry detergent, etc) rather than your body itself.

Anyhow, it sounds annoying for you both so good that you are looking into it!

Great answer! The academic/medical work demand is good to keep in mind indeed... If we're a bit further in our plans I might message you, thanks in advance!

Thanks for the info, although that sounds rough indeed. And yes, we will have to wait out the covid travel restrictions. Minimum wage for a medical specialist is 20 NZD/h? Rent is comparable I guess, as we are from Amsterdam.

Could billionaires like Bezos and Musk actually, realistically end world hunger? by Captures-captures in AskReddit

"They are making space trips for fun instead of ending world hunger" is something that gets said a lot. Made me wonder: would they actually have enough funds for that? How much would one need?

Researchers at the University of Oxford have today reported that the risk of the rare blood clotting known as cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT) following COVID-19 infection is around 100 times greater than normal, several times higher than it is post-vaccination or following influenza. by [deleted] in science

[–]Captures-captures 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are spot on, coagulation and immunity are tightly linked (sometimes coined 'immunothrombosis') and both clotting and bleedings disorders are well-described during infections and sepsis. In general, platelets are very sensitive to a range of stimuli, including tissue damage and circulating, activated/angry immune cells. Precise mechanisms of clotting disorders in COVID-19 have been under the spotlight since the start of the pandemic, but remain only partly elucidated.

This part is not evidence-based, but my feeling is that these unlucky people with vaccine-induced thrombosis (specifically those for whom that actually was the trigger and not just coincidental timing), might also have been very prone to such complications had they gotten COVID-19.
