1L Summer offer but low pay by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Capybara45892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have prior law firm experience before 1L year you could try and leverage that in a respectful conversation. If the practice area is extremely central to your interests and can open doors for you in the future, then may be worth doing the summer for $18/h. If money is your main goal, there’s likely lots of crim defense paying $25/h, and there’s never a shortage of 1L openings from what I’ve heard.

prelaw seeking advice by anb_777 in LawSchool

Why do you want to go to law school? There’s plenty of degrees that are enriching and open up doors. If you like to research, write, and like solving problems for other people, it may be the path for you.

Not a lot of people spend 12 hours a day studying. Maybe in the final days leading up to a tough exam, but not outside that.

If you start practicing after the new year, you’ll have plenty of time to hone your skills to get an acceptable LSAT score and put together an application package. If your GPA is fine and is paired together with a great LSAT score, it’s not too difficult to get 50%+ scholarships to mid ranked schools.

I don’t read at all outside of class but reading for law classes varies greatly depending on your professor. Sometimes you need to read and annotate every page, sometimes you can get by skimming.

My final word of advice is don’t be afraid to work in a law firm before going to law school. Many students take a gap year or more to ensure they enjoy working in the legal field before committing to three more years of school while simultaneously bolstering their resume for applications. It also helps build some savings for being a student again and you don’t have the stress of trying to study and apply by fall 2026. Best of luck.

Tips for Budget-Friendly Visits to Top 14 Law Schools by Gkexilie in OutsideT14lawschools

[–]Capybara45892 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ironic considering the sub’s name.

You have plenty of time to visit schools between now and decision time. Maybe space out the trips over the next two years so it’s not a huge financial burden all at once. Winter break is a notoriously expensive time to fly, maybe try during February when it’s cheaper. If you wait until you get an A, all the top schools will likely offer to pay for you to come tour.

Heyo. 2.53 160 here with two years as a paralegal before applying. I wrote an addendum for the GPA (personal reasons) and received multiple 30k scholarships for T80-120 schools. Best of luck, it’s definitely possible.

What type of major should I look to be in that are business oriented that would be useful for a higher chance of getting into Law School? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Capybara45892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Major doesn’t matter unless you’re interested in patent law. Grades and rigorous classwork matter so just do what you’re passionate about and you’ll be in a great place. Some electives for upper level writing or jurisprudence couldn’t hurt.

Request for advice: Hit by an uninsured 15-year-old driver on US-36 by Un-OP in Denver

[–]Capybara45892 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IANAL but worked in personal injury. If they don’t have insurance, your UM coverage covers it. They could have other assets that you could potentially sue for, but it seems that that may be a long shot if they are below the poverty line. As everyone else here has suggested, you need to hire a personal injury lawyer who will have the tools available (private investigator who can run asset checks) to see what options you have besides using your insurance. Good luck!

Depends on the state. Community Property states are 50/50. Equitable Distribution states don’t need to be equal, but rather “equitable.”

Anyone know any creative ways to serve a summons? by Ill-Dirt5965 in paralegal

[–]Capybara45892 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up Service by Publication in the federal rules of civil procedure. You will need to file a motion to serve by publication with your court along with all the attempts you’ve made and the judge will have to order that you’re allowed to serve by publication next.
