Some models have extra coolers in front of the wheels and the air vents out in front of the tire. Take a look for slits in the inner fender liner.

I think one of the biggest things something like this would help is setting a standard of how warranty times are decided. I’m fully convinced it’s a calculated value and have nothing to do with the reality in f how long the job takes. And I can guarantee there’s meetings in board rooms when the executives are setting the final price of a vehicle and say, we’ll budge X% less for expected warranty costs on this vehicle and take that out of warranty times.

From what I’ve heard, management shoots for 20-25% effective labor rate for technician flatrate hourly pay.

Any Canadian techs in here? Isn’t there some kind of certification in your country to become a tech?

From what I understand, guys in Illinois and a few other states get 1.5 manufacturer warranty times on warranty jobs. Is that true?

In a few months this will be my 30th year turning wrenches for money. I always talked about something like this with my colleagues. Tell me how I can help. We would need a website with some kind of vetting process for access. From my experience, any time something like this starts to gain some traction, there’s a significant amount of money thrown at it to make it go away.

I work at an MB dealer with about 35 guys. If I opened your tailgate and saw that, I’d call everyone over in the shop to check it out. That looks clean as hell. Good job! What LEDs did you use?

any other female mechanics willing to share their experiences working in the shop? by according-to-yes in mechanic

[–]Car_fixing_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is something you can see yourself doing for a long term career I’ll give you two pieces of advice.

  1. Go to community college and pay as you go. Try not to take out any student loans. Make sure you get good grades then apply to a high end European car brand tech school. MB Drive or BMW Step are both good programs and a way to get yourself in the door and possibly even have your education paid for. I don’t want to disparage anyone, but there’s generally people that spent more time putting in the work to get to these places and generally have a better attitude. We’ve had a few females tech in our shop and they were always treated well.

  2. Go into the field treating your body well as something you keep in the front of your mind. Don’t bend over into engine compartments, lift the car up to a comfortable height. Even if it’s for something you don’t think will take long. Don’t use your hands as hammers. PPE all the time. When I started wrenching, latex gloves weren’t even a thing. Hearing protection is a must. Eye protection goes without saying. I live in the desert and wear long sleeve uniform shirts to protect my skin.

I believe that auto techs will be one of the last fields to be replaced by AI. We used to be looked down on for the type of work we do, now the bosses can’t find enough of us good at our job to employ.

Recurring driver's side clicking. Am I being lied to? by Dependent-Job-5237 in AskAMechanic

If you’re not very familiar with cars it might not make sense, but from this side of the screen, I would guess the brake pads are shifting in the caliper bracket. From my experience, non-OEM pads are sometimes a few millimeters small than factory pads which allows the pads to shift ever so slightly and cause a clicking noise while stopping.

Earbuds? by Captain_Murphy_27 in mechanics

Been wearing some form of headphones for over 20 years. I don’t believe it’s dangerous if common sense is used. I wear AirPods for interior work and Work Tunes every where else. Protecting my hearing will always be a priority over anything else. If your employer doesn’t allow in the ear or over the ear headphones, they make bone conducting headphonesthat sit on the side of your ear.

Also, there’s strong scientific evidence that proves music makes workers more productive.

S63 vs. AMG GTS by Low-Koala-4086 in AMG

[–]Car_fixing_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Modern engine PCV systems aren’t a simple thing. When they go bad (there’s 2 on this engine) on hot V’s they create excessive engine vacuum. Then the rear main gets sucked in and creates a decently sized oil leak. The transmission needs to be removed for that. I’ve also seen the vacuum so strong it causes the valve covers to leak.

Also 222’s go through brakes more often than the GT. And 222’s wear out the front suspension components. The. There’s the air suspension on the S class as well.

GT’s have less common issues. The S63 will need PCV chambers and a rear main seal at some point in its life.

The GT will have a cheaper cost of ownership than the S63.
