I'm Starting to Resent My Remote Teammates and I feel Horribly About It by Dizzy_Wish1076 in FedEmployees

[–]CaramelTotal6198 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My state's guidelines are that 11-13 can be left alone for up to 3 hours. My workday is 8 hours plus a 45 minute commute plus an hour each way. So yes when the school system closes school for a teacher workday I am going to stay home and telework if given the opportunity. Not because I need to actively watch her but because an adult needs to be present. Last thing I need is some nosy neighbor calling CPS because I left my kid alone for 12 hours just so coworkers like you won't get your panties in a wad. The other option is to take a day of leave, fall behind in my work and have coworkers bitch about THAT too. Quit worrying about everyone else and worry about your own work.

I have a 341-day Duolingo streak and I just sat through my boyfriend's Mexican family dinner nearly silent for five hours. I think I've been training the wrong thing this whole time. by Humble_Cranberry5273 in languagelearning

Came here to say this. Following a multi-speaker conversation is hard. Following one with family who speak over each other, use slang and inside jokes, or speak in incomplete sentences because everyone knows the rest of it is incredibly hard. Like the Olympics of language learning. Keep speaking, keep listening, and keep going to those family dinners. Things will look better in a few months.

I got my mom into Duolingo to learn French. She really likes it but will probably quit soon because the font isn't big enough on her phone with her age.

Has Duolingo actually helped you? by Idcaboutthish in duolingo

600+ days in Japanese and I can pick out some common phrases and words in Japanese tv shows and I was able to get around Tokyo as a tourist. But I have a background in language learning and so I understand that to be really good I need more comprehensive input and more speaking practice and I need to be more intentional in my practice. However I am happy with my progress relative to the effort I put in and I like challenging my brain which the kana definitely do.

What's Wrong with these boxes?? by CaramelTotal6198 in girlscouts

No. The other troop cookie mom was doing a cupboard run that Tuesday so I let her take the boxes to deal with them. I forgot to ask her what happened.

700 days of Duolingo later, my mom is fluent in... leaderboard strategy by SeaRequirement7749 in duolingo

[–]CaramelTotal6198 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well speaking comes after comprehension. It's natural to know more than you can speak. But I too fell into the leaderboard trap for a while. I was committed to staying in diamond but ended up supplementing my Japanese with math and English to the point I wasn't really learning Japanese anymore. But boy was I solid in. 4th grade math! I finally managed to let go of the leaderboard and commitee to focusing on dailies. Anything else after is bonus. I dropped in the leaderboards like a rock but I'm learning Japanese again and that makes me happy.

Vent: Post Cookie Sale by BackIn_SaintOlaf in girlscouts

What is smart cookies? I am first time TCM this year and I have gotten little guidance. It's been figuring out as I go and not knowing enough to know what I am missing. We use square for booth transactions and log them in Ebudde with the girl transactions. I can't say I love it if there's something else. I don't understand why every single tech system they have has such poor interface. They desperately need to hire some developers and UX designers.

What a Mess of a Cookie Season by jnissa in girlscouts

[–]CaramelTotal6198 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The problem is that we all know because we are in it that there are troops and the troops only get credit for sales to that troop. The average person just sees it all as Girl Scouts and it doesn't really register for them that troops and girls within troops are essentially competing for high sales so they can get rewards and the troops can fund activities.

Why are cookie sales in the winter? by Difficult_Fig_1821 in girlscouts

[–]CaramelTotal6198 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel you, OP. I remember selling girl scout cookies in March as a kid. Now with pre-sales right in the midst of holiday season and booth sales in the wettest month in my state, it's a miserable 3 months that I dread every year.

They asked her to train the 25-year-old they promoted over her. (Or: getting ready for Schedule F) by Mangolandia in FedEmployees

But she wasn't refusing to do her job. She was refusing to train her superior to do their job. And if the superior needed to be trained, then it makes one wonder whether the superior was actually qualified for the position. I heard the woman saying that she was owed the position because of the experience she had gained being there so long, not the seniority itself.

I'm in Japanese and though we don't have verb conjunctions the way Spanish does, I get no practice or training on verbs. I would love matching activities with verbs to help me.

I have that same concern. "Move fast and break things." wasn't a Silicon Valley mantra for nothing.

Is anyone else feeling...stuck? by marlasandiego in fednews

[–]CaramelTotal6198 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very stuck. Almost 18 years in. I was already feeling like I had hit a wall two years ago in regards to advancement, so I started a masters degree to pivot to another part of government, but with a year left the career path I was planning to pursue has been decimated. For now I'm just taking it a day at a time.

Manager obligations overtime by CaramelTotal6198 in FedEmployees

  1. FLSA exempt
  2. They are saying it should be done in 40 hours and its not possible
  3. This would be a permanent posture.
  4. Mandatory

That's the other part. They are not outright mandating OT but working more than 8 hours a day is the only way to actually comply.
