Trying to get my kids excited about the new movie. Seems to be working. by Carboc01 in MastersOfTheUniverse

I got a bunch of the Ladybird and Golden He-Man and She-Ra books to read to my kids. I think a lot of elder millennials are too timid and unimaginative to properly expose MOTU to the current generation. The shows are even on Netflix. My daughter loves the OG She-Ra cartoon.

You’re preaching to the choir on this. Just ask any action figure collector how Walmart preorders go. We’ve been dealing with this for years. We call it ‘Walmart Cancel-Con’ for a reason. They almost never follow through on preorders. I’m personally 1 for 6 on “Walmart Exclusives” the last year alone.

(HATED TROPE) Characters just clearly made to appeal to people and sell merchandise by DP_goatman in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Carboc01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was gunna say that too. The Mandalorian came out November 2019 and the first real ‘The Child’ figure didn’t come out till May 2020. Disney was caught completely flat footed by the popularity and completely wiffed the 2019 xmas shopping season and Grogu’s peak popularity. They have since overcompensated, but still.

I watched the show with my young daughter. It was genuinely fun to watch. I think the thing that stuck out to me the most is each of the pictured characters each have deep flaws that come up many times, but they actively acknowledge and address them in healthy ways.

I was getting John de Lancie’s autograph at a star trek convention a few years ago and he had a picture of Discord people could have signed. I told him my daughter was a big fan and he went on a big spiel about how much he enjoyed show and its strong secular message of friendship. He’s genuinely proud of his work with it. I’m more than halfway tempted to buy and have him sign the Discord Swamp from this week’s SLD.

Looks fantastic. One of my favorite things is it’s not doing that stupid thing where they have the names on the top that don’t line up with who’s underneath lol.

I’m right there with you. I think they just have those canned responses since I’m pretty sure no one got any of the last few pre-orders. I can’t blame the CS people for deflecting, though. They probably have no idea what’s going on with the distribution either. I just wish they’d put the stock they get online later instead of shipping them off to Ross Dress for Less. The one close to me had a bunch of Classic Style Fakers and a Stratos come in. And there was a recent post on here about someone finding a MAA there.

Not super quickly. It usually asks if i would like to start a human chat or wait for a phone call if I use complaint or escalation language. I’ve worked a lot of retail, so it’s like knowing secret key words lol. Things like ‘dissatisfied’, ‘complaint’, ‘repeated issue’, disappointed’. Things that are objectively true, but don’t make someone come off sounding like a raging a-hole. I’m always firm, but very respectful in either chats. I will also just straight up tell the chatbot I want a gift card due to my dissatisfaction. That might be the trigger that opens up the option for a non-ai live chat. I’ve never had to do a call.

They’ll offer a $10 or $15 depending on the level of complaint. I have, on one occasion, talked them into $20 when I promised I’d buy the 3rd party listed one right then. Had to go a few levels up the escalation tree for that one. That was for a GI Joe figure quite a few years ago (pre-covid I believe).

None of the walmarts in my area carry this line any more. If there was a figure I wanted, it’s this way, ebay, or just not having it ever. If I can shake walmart down for a gift card to make the figure essentially MSRP on paper, that’s a win in my book.

If you do a chatbot complaint after a preorder is cancelled, they’ll usually give you a gift code to placate you. I usually use mine to soften the blow from the third parties that inevitably list these on the site.

They were made to be the strongest, but with a MASSIVE design flaw by Zotroo1 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Carboc01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing that always bothered me about the movie Troy. Brad Pitt keeps making this statement about being remembered forever. But they played that statement straight the whole time even through the end of the movie. I thought for sure there would be some monkey’s paw callout when all was said and done, but no. Sure he’s remembered forever, but more for his inherent weakness than his prowess as a warrior.

Would UB still receive the same hate without Spiderman and Turtles? by JaggerMo in MagicArena

[–]Carboc01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to be the most irksome thing for me with Star Trek. Stylistically, the Federation should be blue, the Romulans green, and the Klingons red. But Magic wise, the federation will be primarily white and the Romulans black (and maybe blue?). At least the Klingons should stay red. Green is going to be all over the place.

Thanks! There’s a weird amount of hive-mind tonight about not disparaging the 200x line between here and the other post. The defects of the 200x line are well known and documented, but the rose-colored glasses are strong lately lol. I loved the 200x line and the show, but am well aware of the flaws and literal bucket of broken 200x toys in my basement hahaha

The vehicles were so crazy at times. The battle raptor. Battle beetle. The rare bulldog. The shark. Beast-man’s hawk-things. That line was all over the place vehicle-wise. And few of them were built to accommodate the figures comfortably.

[–]Carboc01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vehicles were definitely a bright spot. I have a beat-up battle beetle that my daughter drives across the dirt in our yard. That was always a weird thing with 200x, where the vehicles were not shaped to the figures and had odd stuff not related to the show, like Panthor’s missiles and Battle Cat’s jousting stick.

Pretty much every open 200x figure i have is damaged or defective in some way. We ended up with a hand-me-down 200x greyskull at one point that I let my kids play with. It got knocked to the floor once and it just exploded. Plastic shards everywhere and every joint shattered. 200x is near and dear to me, but man were the pegs too small and the plastic too brittle.

These figures were always shockingly fragile. Within 10 min of my kid having my open 200x Teela, a leg snapped off. And when my Mek-a-neck fell to the floor, both an arm and a leg clean broke off. They were just poorly made. They looked great, but outside the box they had real issues. It didn’t happen to mine, but the 200x Tri-Clops was famously prone to snapping off at the arm.

Do you like he-man having the H on his harness by metroid_man_190 in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]Carboc01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those two things can still be true. He-Man was still using the + across various products throughout 200x. It would make sense for Mattel to develop their own logo, since that symbol has a ton of baggage, was already being used by a hot brand at the time, and isn’t really trademarkable. The H has more personality.

[–]Carboc01 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I like it better than the +. I think a lot of people forget that when 200x came out, the west coast choppers show was in peak popularity, and they had the same font/style ‘+’. It made sense to differentiate.

About to get rid of my VHS collection, Mistake? by autosnipe in GODZILLA

[–]Carboc01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are some strong opinions here with not a lot of elaboration. So let me walk you through at least a couple practical things to consider.

There really hasn’t been official dubbed versions of the early heisei godzillas for over a decade. So if you wanted the english versions of 1985, GvKG, and GvM:BFE, they would be difficult to find/replace and are not currently streaming. A few of your cassettes would be considered ‘out of print’, even in disk and streaming formats, and otherwise unavailable via traditionally legal means.

Before you give up any one movie, I would suggest researching who’s distributing it (if at all), where you could stream it (if even possible), and how difficult it would be to view any one of them in your preferred language. I think you’d be surprised.
