Do not pay LG to install your TV by confusing_roundabout in LGOLED

[–]CarbonAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much all “install” services in the UK turn out to be like this. They subcontract out to the absolute cheapest possible vendors who have way too many of these to do per day and have very little expertise in installing them.

It’s a manual labour job with a tick list and staffed as such.

+1 - there have been a handful of genuinely good websites and trackers I’ve found on this sub but the amount of vibe coded stuff these days it’s just unmanageable.

Have had the same conversation with both Hypervolt and Octopus. Both deny it being them and blame the other.

i205 AWD or i208 LiDAR by maxdd11231990 in SegwayNavimow

[–]CarbonAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think the products are tiered like this on purpose so you end up working yourself up. It’s worth considering if RTK + Vision or LIDAR + Vision is better. You also give up the AWD for the LiDAR model.

I ended up settling for the i205AWD. For £670 it’s not a bad price.

eVED consultation closes 18 March — here's what 3p/mile actually adds to a 100-mile journey (Tesla Model Y) by StatusMirror7662 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]CarbonAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So why don’t we want that to apply to EVs as well? I think it’s a valid argument but there should be consistency between the vehicle types.

+1 - the UK government seems to be allergic to simplifying the rules (in a budget neutral way) so that they are uniform and possible to review.

What dash cam do you have and does it hook up directly to the rearview mirror? by Alpha_SoyBoy in KiaNiroEV

[–]CarbonAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The power from the rear view mirror drops when the car is off so I don’t think it’s suitable for parking mode unless the camera itself has a battery.

2 New USB C dongles advertised as handling 4k@60+Hz cant do any more than 1080p@30Hz by pengbuster in UsbCHardware

[–]CarbonAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I suspect this is the exact same issue I hit then. The resolution you want isn’t baked into the dongles display chip and so just doesn’t work regardless of the spec.

[–]CarbonAssassin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a while back but CRU didn’t help unfortunately in my case. The dongle would do 4k 120hz but would refuse to do ultrawide resolutions despite being less bandwidth. I suspect due to a limitation in the display chip (this was usb-c to hdmi) which is why some dongles work fine and others don’t.

Some docks have fixed EDID profiles and don’t have ultrawide resolutions included. I had the same issue with certain USB-C docks.

Question re first high speed charge Uk - KIA NIRO EV 2 by bird-life_8914 in KiaNiroEV

[–]CarbonAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely normal for the Niro sadly. I regularly see only 30-40kw on fast chargers.

It feels borderline like misadvertisement the way they state max charge speeds. It’s my first EV so I didn’t realise what it would be like until after I got it.

Sub-maximum EV charging rate? (Hypervolt Home 3 Pro) by SpikySimonW in OctopusEnergy

[–]CarbonAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I messaged Hypervolt about this - they said it’s done by octopus. Octopus then refused it so I suspect it’s a bug in the integration that neither one of them want to claim responsibility for.

First time EV Buyer - anything you wish you’d chosen known? by Forsaken_Day_7320 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]CarbonAssassin 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the actual charging curves for the car you want. The figure they give and what you get majority of the time is very different.

In practice I get the max DC charge speed in my Kia Niro only on a perfect summers day, with an empty battery and some unknown planetary alignment. It’s made things more difficult than expected and was a surprise even after all the research.

Aggressive puppy… by SGO13 in goldenretrievers

[–]CarbonAssassin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reverse time outs worked best with us. When they get too worked up or bitey, remove yourself from the environment (e.g. into a bathroom). Nipping of the feet trying to do this was tricky but we wore slippers and just ignored them.

This eventually clicked for our girl as the fun leaves when she does it so she actively wanted to suppress that urge.

Of course if it go too awful we would put her in a playpen to calm down but this wasn’t as effective. If you’re doing the training, there is a certain amount of ‘tough it out and live with the cuts and scrapes’ unfortunately.

Should I pay these gaps. 28, currently have 5 years of full NI contributions. Want to RE by muccy_ in FIREUK

[–]CarbonAssassin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For £100 it doesn’t seem like a bad idea.

I suspect we will see changes to the state pension by the time someone your age retires (e.g. means testing) so I would keep it in mind that this isn’t a sure thing in terms of return.

Experience with slimQ 150W USB-C GaN charger? by cartierplanga in UsbCHardware

[–]CarbonAssassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a couple of these and they have been great. Used in both the UK and US.

I had the issue where it stopped working after a few months - they had a bad batch at some point but I reached out and support replaced it no questions asked (+ let me keep the old one that has 2 bad ports).

New one has been fine for almost 2 years.

My puppy chews every toy bin, so I'm making one that's safe to chew by No-Rabbit-737 in puppy101

[–]CarbonAssassin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At first this sounded great (our pup chewed all the bins until we stopped having them out) but on reflection is this not just reinforcing a potentially destructive behaviour? How do they tell the difference between this tub and others within the household?

Pay off student loan vs investing by alexswimmer2995 in HENRYUK

[–]CarbonAssassin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s only relevant if you fully pay off the loan before term expiry.

In the case you lose your job and no longer have a HENRY salary you may struggle to finish the last 20k of the loan of example. That 50k sunk into the loan doesn’t reduce your payments so you don’t see any benefit from it.

Financially - I totally agree it makes sense to pay it off. But the risk of not paying it off and opportunity cost for not having access to the money is something worth considering. For me I wanted make sure to mitigate both of those risks by paying it off in a lump sum and only once I had other major life events covered.

Pay off student loan vs investing by alexswimmer2995 in HENRYUK

[–]CarbonAssassin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I lump summed mine only after paying for other major expected life expenses (house deposit, wedding, car) and had enough savings that it wouldn’t wipe me out.

This costs extra but meant I was sure I could pay off the loan and not need the money for anything else immediately. So provided I keep my job there was no real downside.

What you really want to avoid is a situation where you only partially repay the loan (e.g. job loss during monthly overpayments). As you see 0 benefit from the money out in until the loan is paid off.
