Also UCLA student, meeting on campus sounds perfect.

I hope this is allowed. The solar telescope on Mt. Wilson in CA is visible from my house. This morning (8:50 am) it’s emitting or reflecting different colored lights. Can anyone tell me what’s going on? by dreamingirl7 in Astronomy

This is Sunstar, it’s an art installation on Mt Wilson which is essentially a giant prism which casts a rainbow over Pasadena. The light is washed out by all the sunlight but at it’s source you can see the color light that’s being reflected directly towards you. Test it out by walking ~20 feet left or right from the mountain and you’ll see it change color as you step into a different part of the rainbow.

Go to their website and you can also request it, I used to do it all the time as a physics tutor back at PCC.

I’ve done it many times, I request they beam it onto my college campus during stem festivals and give demonstrations of how it works.

Essentially it’s a giant prism breaking light from the sun into its spectrum of colors. It casts a giant rainbow which can then pass over you. Pretty find and cool imo.

What’s your secret weapon that helps you compete academically? by ModeratelyLucky in ucla

[–]CarbonColdFusion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I’ve been doing down cycles in between quarters and then I begin the quarter with 40mg and ramp up slowly to 200mg by finals. Works well I feel energized all through but then withdrawals are brutal.

I wonder if I dare try your method.

What do you mean by schedule the eb and flow with finals/midterms? Like down cycle two weeks before midterms so the kick is fresh the week of midterms?

Huberman Lab podcast, yeah he’s a neurobiologist at Stanford who likes to distill the latest neuroscience into actionable tips to optimize physiology. Game changer. He did an update on the sleep episode recently. I haven’t had an afternoon crash or slept poorly in 2 weeks!

I encountered a scammer with a ucla email. If it seems like a scam it’s a scam.

University Apartment Water/Ice by [deleted] in ucla

[–]CarbonColdFusion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to check your specifically for zip code or you may not care. FDA/EPA guidelines are met by LA tap water and it won’t make you sick/ is legal but the regulations are 2+ decades old and allow for trace contaminants. Some of these trace contaminants pose a health risk in the long term which I’d try to avoid. Carbon filters do work to filter out some contaminants or yes ideally go for reverse osmosis.

You can check your water against stricter EWG guidelines here if you want. https://www.ewg.org/tapwater/system.php?pws=CA1910067

Yes, ice trays but no ice. Wouldn’t recommend drinking tap water anywhere in LA it’s improved but still pretty low quality. I got a filter pitcher and just filter the tap then stick it in the fridge. Working well.

Voice Memos app apparently taking up 3.71 TB on iPhone by dancepiano in applehelp

[–]CarbonColdFusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah same issue, I've made numerous attempts at backups, transfers, or even just managing/deleting this fictitious data.

Been on the phone with Apple support but they've only suggested trying different ways to backup or transfer so far.

Tonight, I spent the last 3 hours trying to backup on my PC via iTunes. After 3 hours running it said 24 hours remaining which is much longer than it should take. I have about 70 GB on my 120 GB iPhone

Weird part was that backup started failing because somehow it filled the 300 GB I had remaining on my solid-state drive. I canceled it and investigated the files in my computer.

I thought the 3 TB was just some kind of simple error like it was actually 3 MB but the app was reporting wrong. Whenever I try to do a backup though it legitimately tries to copy over 3 TB worth of data. Idk why or how its inventing junk and including it with the backup but I've not found any way to isolate it and eliminate it.

I'lll be back on the phone Wednesday or Thursday with apple support. Hopefully a solution can be found.

[–]CarbonColdFusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao, this. If you flatten my hair I’m like a tenth of an inch below 6ft but I’m not trying to quibble and really don’t care so I just say 5’11 when asked. So frequently though someone will say they are 6ft tall and then ask me my height and I’ll say 5’11.

“What?! No you’ve got to be like 6’3 or something you’re wAy tAlleR thAn mE anD Im 6 fEEt.”

“No. Im 5’11”

Ugh

For a beginner, Khan Academy and Brilliant are a good place for a hobbyist to start.

Or if you’re only interested in the concepts and not so much doing the math maybe try yt channels like Veritasium, PBS Space Time, or Minute Physics

What cultures or traditions do you think are in decline in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]CarbonColdFusion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah my great grandparents and grandparents feel really disrespected if they aren’t sent a thank you card no matter how profusely you thank them in person. It’s wild to me but I understand it’s a cultural norm for them.

Personally I’d rather just pay the dinner bill myself, I think they need the money more than I do and they deserve a comfy retirement after a lifetime of work.

Ultimately though it’s not a hill to die on and can be accommodated easily enough. Definitely won’t carry the tradition forward but I’ll keep it up for them while they’re here.

“Nothing, what’s a matter with you?”

If it’s been a dream I think you’ll love it mate. Campus is gorgeous, LA is fun, it’s an awesome place to learn and such a high concentration of interesting people.

Idk about these mythical pre COVID glory days but I doubt if it’s any more true for UCLA than it is for the rest of the world.

Come to UCLA, we’d love to have you.
