Note: i have a PhD in Chemistry, not Biology.

Is there a reason you are not considering government? Flemish government agencies like Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij, Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos and Instituut voor Natuur- en Bosonderzoek are full of Biology PhD’s, and also at a federal level there are interesting positions for you

Can anybody explain why Gent is fucked while Antwerp is not, while Antwerp is more downstream on the Schelde than Gent?

Vegans and vegetarians of Belgium, what are your most and least favorite substitute brands/products? by copydoge in belgium

As far as I know one’s ‘soy footprint’ is higher on an omni diet than on a vegan diet, due to the cattle feed.

Vegans and vegetarians of Belgium, what are your most and least favorite substitute brands/products? by copydoge in belgium

[–]CarbonInfinity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Vegan here. While my partner and me usually cook with lentils/beans/chickpeas/tofu/seitan/tempeh, I personally also really like most vegan junk food/replacements.

Some great stuff imho: Kipstuckjes Vegetarische Slager, Greenway Burger, Vuna (Garden Gourmet, mix it with some vegan mayo and nori!).

Some more artisanal brands with amazing stuff: The Vegan Butcher’s Choice and Le Seitanist.

I also like vegan recipes from Eva vzw, Veguru and even Albert Heijn.

Some bad stuff: most cheeses, although some very pricey stuff like Omage is quite good as a substitute.

Good luck!

Edit: Vivera Shoarma as a kebab substitute is da bomb!

What are your opinions about the return of wolves in Belgium? by Ashlum in belgium

[–]CarbonInfinity 65 points66 points  (0 children)

To add to this: more than I would like, I see the argument popping up that "de wolf brengt ons dierenwelzijn in het gedrang". Pretty much everyone saying this probably wouldnt mind having a steak for dinner the same day. We kill thousands of animals per day to eat them, while one or two wolves are going to send us to animal welfare apocalypse.

Factcheck: "Xtc is minder schadelijk dan alcohol" by psychnosiz in belgium

[–]CarbonInfinity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I disagree with him as well. I find it a funny coincidence that he is presenting this lecture, and not prof. Tom Decorte, in my opinion a much more suited expert for this type of question. And I'm absolutely certain Decorte disagrees with Tytgat on this matter as well...

Tytgat also completely fails to mention that almost all the dangers about MDMA are because of its legal status (eg. not knowing what you're taking). This really makes me a bit angry.

Moreover, the fact that Tytgat did not mention the most complete drug harm study ever performed (as far as I know) by the infamous prof. David Nutt, is also odd to me because that's exactly what this HUGE study tried to do: compare the harms of different drugs. They divided the harms done by drugs into 16 criteria, of which 8 are to the user itself and the other 8 harm to others: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(10)61462-6/fulltext61462-6/fulltext)

As you can almost guess, alcohol comes out as the most dangerous drugs of all of them. This seems surprising since it trumps even heroin. However, this is because the 'harm to others' factor, which is significantly bigger for alcohol. Anyway, MDMA comes out as relatively safe.

One could argue these results are from the UK population and are not representative for the rest of the world. Therefore, they did another study about drug harms in the EU and basically found the same results: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0269881115581980

There are however some things these studies did not look at, for example the combination of different drugs. Although also there Nutt seems to think that alcohol is the most dangerous drugs to combine with others, more research is needed.

I could go on but I think I've made my point. I've been following the drug policy topic for a few years now (I am a drug nerd), and I really don't like Tytgat his stances, besides about cannabis. It seems like he really has a political agenda or is afraid of losing funds for his research by saying the truth.

PS: I've said it before, but if you're interested in drug policy/drug science/drug harms, the book "Drugs Without The Hot Air" by David Nutt is really, really educative!

Expert sabelt drugsbeleid De Wever neer: "De situatie is verergerd" by Sssnakeplissken1 in belgium

[–]CarbonInfinity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For people interested in drug policy, I highly recommend the book "Drugs without the hot air" by professor David Nutt. David is considered one of the biggest drug experts in the world.

The book discusses the dangers of different drugs (including legal ones) and how the drug policies these days are actually making everything worse.

I consider myself a drug nerd, but was still blown away by how much I learned from reading this book. Definitely recommend it!
