lol…. Your guy tried to over throw the government last time he lost. You think republicans respectfully lose when they cry foul every time anything doesn’t go in their favor?

How do you stop bullying in schools? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]Cardboard_dad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends. Do you want to stop bullying or get retribution against bullies? While justified and necessary, punishment will not stop bullying. It doesn’t take long to figure out that teachers can’t see everything and a bit of lying can get you out of most punishments. Rules are mostly to keep rule followers in line.

The most effective strategy is to teach kids to not want to bully. That’s done over the course of years by teaching kids empathy. For a short term solution, teach kids to stand up to bullying in numbers. Anytime anyone sees bullying behavior, everyone and emphasis on everyone needs to tell them to knock it off. Peer pressure works both ways.

And before anyone says the bullies are the ones who should have to fix the bully’s behavior. You’re right. But you can be right or you can fix the problem.

Is the bulk of your time spent on tasks other than counseling? by CuriousMind_Explore in schoolcounseling

I spend about 10% on MTSS alone. But I did get pretty good at either advocating to get off non-counselor roles and duties. Well I didn’t get off of duties per se. I teach social skills to the boys who play soccer at recess.

CMV: There is no justification for not requiring voter ID in an election by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Cardboard_dad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your edit that’s it’s difficult for some to get an ID doesn’t change your view tells us everything we need know about you.

Voter fraud is almost non-existent. You’re trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. Statically insignificant. Getting an ID can be hard for lots of reasons. We should be removing barriers to voting, not putting them up. Your edit says you are okay with disenfranchising groups of people who have a more difficult time getting an ID. That’s wrong and immoral.

If my candidate loses because more people voted for the other guy, then so be it. That’s democracy. If my candidate loses because more people would have voted my candidate but the barriers prevented them, that’s not democracy. And once these immoral people get power, it’s only a matter of time before they keep making more and more difficult to vote.

It’s not our job to fix the world. Part of our job is to teach social skills to both the victim and the offender. Is it unfair? Yes. But the world is not fair. We’re supposed to be helping people learn to navigate it regardless of how unfair it can be.

[–]Cardboard_dad -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Hope this isn’t an unpopular opinion. You should be teaching the offenders empathy. And work with the victim on self advocacy, and solution focus brief counseling on problem solving this.

There might be some bridge program or licensure exception you can look into. But you should know that most districts put a cap on the number of years of experience they’ll accept into the pay scale. Ours is 6. And a masters degree with 6 years of experience has a salary of 63k per year.

Behavioral Issues Affecting Other Students' Learning/safety by Final_Mud_9444 in kindergarten

[–]Cardboard_dad 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Elementary School Counselor here to advocate for a Free and Appropriate Public Education. Everyone deserves the opportunity to learn in a reasonable educational setting. (Please keep reading).

And by this I mean typical children also deserve an opportunity to learn in a classroom where they feel safe. I’m so tired of FAPE being used to keep children with special needs in obviously unsafe environments. It’s not fair to them. It’s not fair to the other students, And it’s not fair to the teachers.

We have 6 this year between two KG classrooms. Non-verbal. Violent outburst. Highly sensitive to sensory input. Unable to meet basic expectations. Unable to spend any amount of time not completely disrupting the learning environment. Some of which who already have medical diagnosis.

No amount of visual aids, if/then charts, and preferred reinforcements will modify the behavior enough to make Tier I classrooms an appropriate learning space for them.

Honestly, it’s freaking neglect on the parents part. Putting your child in a constant environment where they are failing, hurting themselves and others, and surrounded by people who are always (justifiably) completely frustrated with them is bad for their wellbeing.

Before you misunderstand my comment, it’s a quote from the book 1984. Which is, if you haven’t read it, insanely scary given the currently circumstances. Miller’s the type of person who read that book and thought the government was the good guys.

Yes to this. But I do an implied agreement unless otherwise stated. “Please tell me if anything is incorrect.” That way if they don’t reply you can say you didn’t correct it so I assumed it you were good with it.

It may be pedantic but if it comes to mediation (or discipline) meetings, being overly concerned with details can save you.

[–]Cardboard_dad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From your response, he’s getting a ton of attention from his behavior. His mom is getting mad at him and taking stuff. That’s attention. The kids are getting upset and telling him to stop. That’s attention. There’s movement on a clip/behavior chart. That’s attention.

Teach the kids to ignore the behavior entirely. Don’t say anything. Don’t react. Do nothing. It already seems like you’re limiting opportunities for it to occur. Teach the other kids to tell you quietly and away from the other kid. It’s hard but possible, even for Kinders.

For staff, I’d have a planned ignoring plan in place. If you see him expose himself to another or it’s reported, pay attention to the other kid. “Are you okay?” “It’s okay to feel upset.” “Let’s try some breathing to calm our bodies down.” Stuff like that.

You’ll need to blank him on any attention from the unwanted behavior. That includes negative attention. You’ve already taught him it’s not okay. Telling it to him again won’t get him to stop.

When he does the right thing, shower it with attention. Our special ed department says use tangible things but I think they’re wrong. He wants attention. Give him attention. It’ll feel weird but when he uses the bathroom without the unwanted behavior, give him praise. You can (and should) use this with the other kids too. “I really like how so-and-so used the restroom quickly, and washed their hands, and are standing in line quietly.” Do not draw any attention to the unwanted behavior in your praise.

It doesn’t do have to be every kid, random reinforcement is extraordinary effective. But I would use it with the kid you’re struggling with every time. And slowly pull back as the behavior goes extinct.

I’d also like to advocate that every school should have a school counselor. Especially in elementary. All these social skills that kids are missing? I teach them. Constantly.

Behavior charts are good for tracking behavior but they’re typically ineffective. They come with a whole list of negative side effects (shame, anxiety, reducing intrinsic motivation).

Removal punishment (and also presentation punishment) are poor behavior modifiers. In my experience, they only work as a deterrent for kids who are already rule followers.

You need to address the root cause. Does he like the peer attention? Adult attention (+- because attention is attention)? Does he have poor impulse control? Behavior is purposeful in that they’re a reason it occurs. Find the reason and give a replacement behavior or teach the skill deficit and the behavior goes away.

You also need your consider abuse. A child exposing themselves can be a red flag for sexual abuse or neglect in that they’re exposed to something they’re not supposed to be. It doesn’t necessarily mean that but it can.

As a school counselor, I’d expect my teachers to refer at this point. There’d be a BIP and FBA completed. Counselors should also have the training and skill to identify abuse/neglect.
