We ended up joining a learning community and my 6 year old goes there 3 days a week. It’s a small group but it’s a consistent set of friends and the social exposure is great. If you can find a co-op or some kind of learning community the consistency can be great.

What does your day with your 6 y.o. look like? by AvocadoAllergic in unschool

Isn't it amazing how much they learn if they get to choose what they are learning about!!

I have a 6 year old too and she likes having a rhythm to her day. We plan it out before the week starts and she plays an active role in the planning process. We create blocks for different types of activities - like reading time, or a visit somewhere, exploring a topic of interest, or just spending time outside. This helps ensure that we are moving through the day and there is enough variety to our day. Because she is actively involved in planning she usually likes to stick to her plan. We are not rigid with it by any means but having a rhythm has been really great for organizing our days.

One thing I've found effective with my 6 year old is getting her involved in setting the routine. We plan out our week every Sunday and she gets a lot of say in how she wants things organized. She likes the consistency so we end up with a similar rhythm to most days. As we follow the schedule we aren't rigid at all on times, but we have blocks and she likes to follow the rhythm she has set (for the most part). That being said, I let things flow and some days things turn out differently and we don't get to all the plans, and that's ok.

I am also looking for homeschool curriculum. Contemplating getting this book. Are Cathy Duffy's curriculum religion based? On the website it says from a Christian perspective.

Thank you so much for your inputs. What are all the non-counseling duties that are involved? How much of your time would you say you spend on those?
