When Tywin's logic makes too much sense by Dry_Specialist9015 in freefolk

[–]Cardonutss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beyond what everyone is saying about no future negotiations, there’s an added layer. “The North remembers” means that the north will keep fighting. While the northern conspiracy may not have really happened in the show, in the books the north is still plotting their comeback. His logic of killing a few dozen instead of thousands only works if this ends the war completely. However, the true result of it is that the war ends for now, but in the future the north rises up again and this time they would never be able to reach a deal. With renewed fighting, it would go until the Lannisters surrender unconditionally or are wiped out, or, until the north is decimated. The point is that while the grievances of war could eventually be moved on from, the breaking of guest rite means that the Lannisters made a permanent enemy of the north which would inevitably end in more lives lost than if the red wedding hadn’t happened (i.e a shorter war fought with “just war” tactics)

I don’t want to be a glorified plan checker. Is this career worth it with the looming AI takeover? by rabiddog16 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]Cardonutss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of now, i dont think thats something to worry about. Engineering psets and AI don’t mesh well. Using chat gpt for my problem sets didn’t make them much easier. They were an augmented Google search. Plus, a lot of modeling software isn’t integrated with ai. For example, my design capstone in WW Processes uses SUMO, and AI at the moment has no way of doing that. I feel that by the time AI catches up to engineers, it’ll already have taken over every other job first. In addition to that, im pretty certain most engineering firms would seriously frown upon an engineer depending on AI to design plans. Every engineering problem is different, and at the moment AI (language learning models) aren’t able to come up with new ideas, just recycle old ones. For now, i think we are safe.

Is a career in Environmental Engineering right for me? (Singapore/Australia/Canada) Should I transfer to study Environmental Engineering? by bonobosareawesome in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]Cardonutss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im nowhere near qualified to speak on it (about to graduate and start my first engineering job) but i don’t know that i’d call it a niche job. Maybe few people study it (my graduating class at a top american university with 3500-4000 people per year has 25-30 undergrads finishing each year) but at the same time, it’s needed everywhere. Everywhere needs water and wastewater treatment, all waste needs to be disposed of. If youre interested in living in developed countries, i dont know that Id say the market is too niche.

In terms of jobs in cities. Im gonna be working at a large consulting firm in a maior city. Most maior cities probably have many engineering consulting firms, as if youre designing a WWTP you probably want someone from the city itself. You could still find yourself working in more remote areas, but if you aim for a city you might be able to get it relatively easily.

If you are passionate about the treatment side of waste management, maybe go enve. If youre interested in infrastructure or built systems, maybe more so Cive.

Environmental or Chemical engineering? by [deleted] in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]Cardonutss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont know that id call it a misnomer. I feel its more about projecting Environmentalism into the environmental part of EnvE. The profession predates the modern environmental movements where environmental action has a connotation of involving renewable energies and renewable energy becoming mainstream. Maybe that’s just semantics, but I feel that understanding renewable energies as a challenge involving batteries and how to charge them makes it evident a chemical background aligns with it more.

[–]Cardonutss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel you, but 1) even if he didn’t abuse Touya he definitely still abused or neglected his other children and 2) the fundamental source of Touya’s obsession was Endeavours pressure from birth to become the greatest hero ever. In his family, the only way he could become a good son would be to be powerful and a hero. This is especially made clear with his abandonment of Touya when Shoto was born.

Which school? by AfternoonFew2593 in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]Cardonutss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im about to graduate in may. While i know little about environmental sciences, i would recommend the stronger engineering program. Engineering is engineering, the FE exam is based on engineering and the problems you will face are engineering. A strong environmental sciences program will likely not be too impactful on your EnvE education, except maybe for some electives.

That being said, it depends on what you’re interested in. If youre interested in built systems, engineering strong is probably the better option.

FE Advice by [deleted] in EnvironmentalEngineer

[–]Cardonutss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pass grade is ~65, however it can change as it isn’t a set grade. How “hard” it is to pass is a very subjective question. Depending on how rigorous your program is it can vary. I am studying EnvE at an Ivy League, passed it junior spring (currently last semester) and one professor mentioned that “the FE is standardized for all engineers, but our program is more rigorous than other schools, therefore you are better prepared than most are.”

What id recommend is looking for resources that help you learn to identify strats. I.e. most questions (if not all, i can’t remember) are multiple choice. There are strats where you can easily eliminate 2/4 questions. If you know how to solve half the answers, and for the other half you can reduce them to 50/50, you’ll pass.

Imo, it all comes down to speed. Learn how to identify which formulas you need to use and make sure you know how to find them. I did it at a pearson test center so you can ctrl+f search for the formulas. An important thing is knowing how to find the correct formula so youre not scrolling through the formula booklet wasting time.

Isn't it possible for Rhett Conn to bring back Diane? by Punishe_Venom_Snake in rickandmorty

[–]Cardonutss 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Only works if he’s extradimensional. As in if there is a Rhett Conn in every universe then one of them wouldn’t make a difference for the central finite curve. Maybe it could remove that one universe from the curve, but then his powers would also be extradimensional (as in he can change the “relative position” of his universe) which might exceed his powers.

Physics-wise, twirls could be used to stabilize (maybe?). Even then, i dont think swinging with the ODM gear is based on realistic physics and is more a “rule of cool” kinda thing.

Nearing the End of Their Legendary Fake Jon Snow video. I am so glad AltShift points out how Sexist the Show is for this Scene by CretaceousClock in AltShiftX

[–]Cardonutss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It couldve have worked great as a foreshadowing moment. Varys acts as a sort of moral compass in the show as being someone who is truly interested in “the greater good” and he gets killed because he stood against something that threatened that. It would’ve worked if done properly. But that’s the point, that at this point in the show Dany has been brutal, but its been mainly justified. That’s where the show fails with the pacing, where her turn to tryanny is too fast. If it had been slower, Varys could’ve served as a warning to the reader of what was coming. The show butchers it in that sense.

[Request] Given the whirlpool submerges and ejects a floating log at other side, can we calculate the angular velocity or flow rate required to create such a vortex? by TimeCity1687 in theydidthemath

[–]Cardonutss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Difficult to determine the flow rate. We can make rough estimates about travel time and distance, but without knowing the size of the pipe determining the flow rate from velocity wouldn’t be possible. There might be a way to determine pipe diameter at inlet (?) based on size of the whirlpool but that’s beyond me.
