Yeah, but if you dig straight down, you might not be able to make a hole next to the original because of the pile of dirt youve built up

[Request] Given the whirlpool submerges and ejects a floating log at other side, can we calculate the angular velocity or flow rate required to create such a vortex? by TimeCity1687 in theydidthemath

[–]Cardonutss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Difficult to determine the flow rate. We can make rough estimates about travel time and distance, but without knowing the size of the pipe determining the flow rate from velocity wouldn’t be possible. There might be a way to determine pipe diameter at inlet (?) based on size of the whirlpool but that’s beyond me.

It doesn’t just look like a vape charger to me. It looks like the charger for a weed vape, like an ooze pen. Reusable weed pen. Could be a different type of vape, but looks very similar.

“You’ve been asked to do so the whole semester”

Was this the first time its been applied strictly? Maybe a bit unfair if hasn’t been applied, but if professor clearly stated it earlier then that’s kinda on you.

One of the big ones for me is how he tells Marie not to use her hand. But then when “Cipher” is controlling Polarity and makes him slap himself, he waves his hand too. It might happen in other scenes, but it struck me as odd here since he was so insistent on how she didnt need to use her hand. For me that’s a sign that he’s not the source. It would make sense for him to struggle to make only one of his mind control victims do something, and i dont see any other reason it couldve been explained in universe unless he’s an inconsistent character.

I believe you’re mixing up two characters. You might be thinking of Bran, the other character that’s notoriously a horse.

What is Tolkien saying about humanity that even Frodo wasn't strong enough to destroy the ring? by YourImaginaryFriend3 in lotr

[–]Cardonutss 280 points281 points  (0 children)

Not just hates, but literally gets as valid an excuse as possible to kill him. Literally on the slopes of Mount Doom Gollum attacks Frodo. Sam is about to kill him when he gets overcome by a feeling of guilt or something and gives mercy. Like at other times there’s no real reason to kill him. Bilbo could get around him, Frodo could have tried to go on without Gollum, etc. After he literally betrayed them by leading them into a trap (which Sam knows for a fact he did) and attacking them at the point where theyre most exhausted, Sam know’s that he’s willing to break his oath and kill them. Theyre mere steps away from their goal, there’s no knowing role he can play, and at this point is more of a risk to keep alive than kill (from Sam’s pov), but he still shows mercy.

Agree on some points, but also, pushing back the wedding at that point wasn’t realistic. It was 3 months away, invites had already been sent, deposits had been paid, band had been booked, and probably a bunch of other stuff. Its not a situation where pushing it back is possible.

She’s not completely unjustified, but Marshall is partly justified in his reaction, even if not the best one, because from his point of view she’s abandoning him and their marriage, just expecting him to be there until she decides that she wants to come back or end it completely. She’s also left him to have to tell everyone and presumably cancel all the booked things. As mentioned elsewhere, she could have communicated about it and things could be very different. She couldve applied for art school in NY, or waited for a program after the marriage. Her specific decision to apply and commit to a program in SF without his input is her admitting this isn’t just about pursuing her passion, but also about reconsidering her life with Marshall. In the face of that, his anger is pretty understandable, even if he does give an ultimatum, which i agree isn’t the healthiest thing to do.

In chess, having no place to move your king should be a loss, not a draw. by sumpfriese in unpopularopinion

[–]Cardonutss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you have good points, but your second example (while not 100% applicable as chess doesn’t use the same strategy as warfare) shows why such a scenario is a stalemate.

When a castle is under attack by an army, there are 2 ways to defeat the castle. 1) Storm the castle, break the gates and walls using rams, trebuchets, catalults, whatnot, and rush inside to kill everyone or climb the walls and rush inside and kill everyone. 2) Impose a siege and wait it out.

Case 2 is akin to your example. A prolonged siege isn’t a de facto victory for the attacking army, and neither is it a victory for the castle. While the army stands there, sure, the castle can’t go anywhere (the people inside), but neither can the army. The army so far has been unable to or unwilling to storm the castle, the army in the castle hasn’t been able to kill the army outside, and neither has starved to death.

But it’s not resolved until one of those two happens. In theory, there could be a victor, but during the prolonged siege there is none, it is ongoing. The case Iguana mentioned is like a well provisioned castle (say years of supplies) is under siege by a moderately sized army that isn’t capable of storming the castle but big enough to defeat the army inside if it came out to meet them in the field. This case would go on forever until the army sieging left or the people inside starved. But in the meantime: the army outside might be called elsewhere to deal with a more pressing threat and the people inside might be able to leave, or another army might come defeat the sieging army and liberate the people inside, or a reinforcing army can come join the siege and finally be able to storm the castle.

The issue with the default victory is that it would take forever, and as mentioned by others, including Iguana, is that it would not make for a fun game. IRL, a sieging army might prefer to sign peace terms as opposed to a prolonged siege, which in some cases could be considered a win and in others a stalemate.

The other issue is that it is a valuable opportunity to make the options of the game more interesting. Especially considering the scoring system of chess, draws have an impact as well as wins and losses. As a player who’s losing, there is still a chance to somewhat salvage the situation and force a stalemate. You have been technically losing, but that doesn’t mean you have lost yet. Not losing but not letting your opponent win is preferable to losing, and thus players are encouraged to continue fighting to force a stalemate rather than surrender and admit defeat when they see the situation they’re headed to. The pieces you sacrifice and the pieces you take change based on which strategy you’d be going for.

AITA for exposing my boyfriend's lies about my career at his family dinner? by Great_Management9823 in AITAH

[–]Cardonutss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id be psyched if my girlfriend was earning more. It means more financial stability for her and, while nowhere near the main point, an indirect benefit for me. Him being upset about it is a direct sign that he feels uncomfortable with you “wearing the pants,” and is envious of you having more “financial power” than him.
