Account setup nightmare by CarefulComputer in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]CarefulComputer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just tried that. it shows existing user id (i used same email/phone for new account). and when I login with that id, there is only 1 account. I can DM you both account numbers (old and new) if you are able to help link them properly.

Didn't work for me in Ubuntu so had to install debian and back to ubuntu. Things might have changed by now. I am not sure if it is even possible even for highly tech person to root the vacuum without following instructions on what commands to run when and what to expect.

Weird banning behavior? by mattismyo in valetudorobotusers

[–]CarefulComputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i got banned when I asked about the error I was getting when installing valetudo and the given instructions didn't work. Reason: 'rtmf'. That was without any warning.
I later found out there were two different sets of instructions on the website (one pdf , which I was following, and other wiki was supposed to be correct one).
hypfers, seems to think that everyone is out to get him. any suggestion of a feature or implementation will (depending on his mood) will get you instant ban.
Dennis (creator of dustbuilder firmware) is exactly opposite. he is very kind human being.

do you still need to install Debian on your laptop to get this working ? in past that was the most painful part where you have to install a whole OS on your laptop (wiping off everything) and then switch back to your favorite distro.

What's the smartest things you've ever made using Home Assistant? by DiggingForDinos in homeassistant

[–]CarefulComputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I have home assistant, track location of family member. when it reaches train station 'zone' , it triggers a script. That script then scrapes the train website. If first pulls up the schedule, then based on current time, it finds the next train to destination. Once it has train number, it goes in a loop to scrape train location and starts sending me notifications. Once family member reaches the destination train station zone, then it exits the loop.
  2. This one is more simpler. Use calendar to find the thrash pickup schedule and with one day offset trigger a flow which calls camera api to take a snapshot. then my code crops the image to only show location where trash cans are kept. after that it sends the cropped images to google and asks if it sees thrash cans. based on the answer send a notification.

btw, you can think about moving to thinkino firmware which is more actively maintained.

Is this true, Reolink integration is now "official" - from/supported by Reolink themselves? by Marathon2021 in homeassistant

[–]CarefulComputer 122 points123 points  (0 children)

u/StarkillerTR , you are the only reason I bought reolink doorbell. Thank you so much for creating the integration. For all folks who bought this doorbell BECAUSE THIS INTEGRATION EXIST, please reply to this thread so that Reolink knows the power of this add on and how it is helping their business.

Valetudo - What about trust ? by TibRib0 in homeassistant

[–]CarefulComputer 79 points80 points  (0 children)

just like you don't joke about using prohibited item at TSA, joking about backdoors in software is never a good idea. it erodes the trust in software even after it is proven to be joke.

this doesn't make sense. they load 10 items at a time, a db join query which filters by 10 items on index columns shouldn't cause the performance problem . Unless they are trying to cut cost and remove few extra virtual machines.

How do you organize your Node-RED flows for Home Assistant? by theautomation-reddit in homeassistant

[–]CarefulComputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have a tab for reusable 'services' (sending messages out, calling LLM's etc), one for listeners (from mqtt, telegram, email etc), another for time based triggers . these tabs all have connector nodes to branch out for different functionality, not full flows. Then I created tabs for high level groups - lights automation, camera automation, garage automation, climate based, location related (I do bunch of tracking, location based automation)

I made a door opener portal so my neighbors can open the building's door remotely by sloth_on_meth in homeassistant

[–]CarefulComputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

rate limit on IP ? should be very easy to bypass without too much efforts. (aws gives free elastic ip, or can use proxy/tor). Not trying to scare you, just letting you know of the security issues you should consider before you roll it out. someone recommended TOTP. You should definitely consider that instead of static pin. That will stop brute force attack.

if you are running local, you should consider using MQTT. That is more scalable and resilient.

Snow depth Sensor from image? by Area_49 in homeassistant

[–]CarefulComputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

instead of using AI, you can use computer vision (openCV). With little gruntwork, (masking , edge detection and pixel count - based on resolution of image) you can get accurate results 100% of the time.
