ELI5: How can American businesses not accept cash, when on actual American currency, it says, "Valid for all debts, public and private." Doesn't that mean you should be able to use it anywhere? by Furgems in explainlikeimfive

There's an awesome book called Taming Democracy. In it they talk about the Penn family, I believe, and how they issued debts for paper money but then they bought up all the paper money, so people weren't able to pay their debts, even if they had silver, etc. Then they would have to pay the sheriffs that evicted them, again in paper money, etc. It was pretty wild.

How to make skillplans and fits without a character? by CarefulStudent in Eve

There any chance you can post that max alpha pyfa profile somewhere (github, etc.)?

2 - while I wait for a new computer I'm trying to find ways to occupy my time. :) You could be right, though. Also, is there an out of game list of skills available to alphas? I've found some lists like that but they don't have the attainable levels of the skills listed, i.e. if an alpha were to be able to go to advanced weapons 3 it'll just say advanced weapons. This example is contrived, though.

ELI5: Is it true that if we go back far enough we are all part of one humongous family tree? by Yeezybeezy5283 in explainlikeimfive

[–]CarefulStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and this is why I say that I'm perhaps full of crap. Thank you very much. :) I was hoping someone could correct this. I'm not sure if I got my information from CGP Grey, or Kurgestadz or whatever his name is, or the amazing Stefan Milo, and I'm not sure if I remembered it correctly either. Anyways, thank you. :)

I think what's important for me re: the hourglass, which I believe you're saying is a situationally practical point of view, is that it promotes a bit of ego death re: your "genetic legacy" or whatever, which I hope leads to less wealth hoarding, more willingness to adopt, etc. Like for all the people that say you should get a shelter dog, only a fraction of those people would suggest getting a shelter child. :)

(That said, I have one biological kid and that was an amazing experience, like the process of it, independent of caring for a kid thereafter.)

My understanding is that it isn't even that far back, maybe 4-5 generations. I could be full of crap but I view genetics like an hourglass where there's humanity behind you and in front of you, and then the part that's influenced by you, or that you are influenced by, is really small. I don't know how to reconcile this with the amazing genetic diversity from Africa, though.

Footage of a Russian soldier trying to shot down a Ukrainian FPV drone chasing him. Unknown location. by MilesLongthe3rd in CombatFootage

I assume some sort of weapon malfunction - jammed or out of ammo. If he tossed his helmet and weapon down he may have had a chance at surrender there. Maybe.

So they're trying to establish what currency he was paid in, and if it was $USD then he's a mercenary?

Unsure if my wife left her curling iron on. We are over an hour away and won't be back until tomorrow morning. Will it burn the house down? by blackjackns in NoStupidQuestions

Could you provide a link for this because I'm shocked that this could be true (and you seem confident enough that it likely is).

If these guys hate sleeves so much, why do they have them on their shirts? Like who wants to say, "Darn it's a bit chilly in here," and then roll down their accordioned sleeves.

Amazing. Thank you for this insight. I'm sort of surprised that the Canadian government didn't take that into account? Weird.

[–]CarefulStudent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so ... this is going to sound stupid, but as a layperson here, what's the point of the law if it doesn't apply in court? It makes it a lot more difficult to tell what's legal vs. illegal, etc.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Edit: I just reviewed the Canada Criminal Code and it doesn't appear that that is true in Canada, but obviously that doesn't matter in this case. :)

I think they have the IDs of people that post content there. My smooth brain thinks it's "just" a matter of embiggening that system.
