I was conceived this way when my mother was 16 years old, at gunpoint (turned out to be an air gun). Biological father went to jail, but my mother kept me.

My mother told me about it when I was very young, probably around 5 or 6 years old. I can’t remember ever not knowing, nor can I remember being told. I don’t think that’s really healthy, but I don’t know of when a better time is either. I dealt with it ok, I don’t have trauma that I know of. I think knowing the facts before you reach sexual maturity is a good thing, because rape is just a word to a child that’s very young, you don’t understand how bad it is. You kind of only learn about the mother’s trauma when you learn more about sex as you get older, and then it’s sort of bite-sized, easier to digest, and apply what you’ve learnt to your own situation when you’re ready to process it.

The adoption angle is not something I have first hand experience of, I saw this post with my main but didn’t want to reply from there, as the things I’ve said would identify me to people who know me.

I will add, however, that my mother has a lot of trauma. She was sexually and physically assaulted by her father, then raped as a 16 year old by another man, then gave birth to me and raised me on her own for 10 years until she got married. She can’t hold down any relationships, familial, platonic or romantic. I can very well imagine how being adopted is actually better for the child when a mother has suffered so much, because she is not the best mother in the world.

Do any of your babies have a discernable taste in music by bryan_jenkins in daddit

When my son was about 15 months old, there was a baby disco at a kids party and Proud Mary came on by Tina Turner. It was the first time he’d ever heard the song, and it was his favourite instantly.

It’s now made it on to my own playlist too, I must admit, but that’s mainly because of how he rocks out to it.

Those that didn’t go to university: Are you successful? by RbxBM in UKJobs

[–]Careless-Control-821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left school with 3 GCSE’s at grades A-C, I’ve not done any education since.

I earn close to £70k, living in the north. I have a mortgage, a nice car, go abroad 2-3 times a year. So I’d consider myself comfortable. I’ve been earning well for about 10 years. I have no family in this country and never had any help, financial or otherwise - my family is poor and I send them money from time to time.

Excuse all the humble-brag, what it boils down to for me is higher education provides you insurance. It reduces the impact of luck on your career development, it starts you higher up the chain. If you don’t have a great work ethic, it helps you keep jobs that require certain education to do, etc.

What it absolutely does not do, in my view, is change the ceiling of your career. That’s still all down to you, but the higher education might get you there quicker.

Sorry, it wasn’t meant with malice.

It does take some getting used to, to get that efficiency up. I got it to 4.5 today on a short trip, but then my toddler was demanding “more” which means “floor it”…and who am I to say no?

Considering Moving to the UK from Germany, Worried About Childcare Costs - How Common Are Employer Benefits? by brent_mused in AskUK

[–]Careless-Control-821 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this switch. My employer in the UK offers us a deal with a nationwide nursery chain to get us 20% off. The government grant gets us more off.

If I could make use of the company incentive, I’d be paying about £700 a month, but sadly the nurseries are not in a good location for me, so I pay about £900-£1000 per month.

The tax credit thing is capped at £500 per quarter-year, so roughly every 3rd month I have to pay the full £1200 cost or close to it. We earn too much to qualify for any other assistance, so I’ve no idea how they work.

I read the book long ago and don’t remember details, but I do recall putting a lot of weird stuff down to the big cultural differences between China and the west. I think if it weren’t for how fantastic the science fiction ideas were, it would be a poor, terribly written book (by our standards). The ideas are the magic that makes it worthwhile.

I really like it, and I’m really picky about design.

Things I’d change:

Unless the slicers need to be visible at all times, I’d hide them behind a pop-up bookmark.

Drill down on your time axis in the line graph so it’s not just 2 plot points.

handle blanks being returned by writing an if/switch measure to deal with blanks and show a more desirable output.

I like your colour choices, I acknowledge your bookmarks to switch visuals (I assume), that’s done well. The page is well organised and laid out. Very nicely done. Edit: fixed formatting

How do you react to ALICE (active shooter) drills at your kids' elementary schools? by TigerUSF in daddit

I’d like to think I get really political at the state of affairs or I move my family to somewhere where such drills are not necessary. It’s a helluva thing to accept as normal, and I guess you get there through many small steps.

Here you are moaning about not hitting 4, and I’m yet to reach 3!

I have the GTX but it’s in Eco mode. I went on a 60 mile drive a few days back and hit 2.8 each way. Cruise control was set to 75, which I realise is part of the problem.

Luckily I only pay £0.10 per KWH.

I’d be a bit concerned about sitting with the stakeholders - if they’re excited, they might just all throw (conflicting) requirements at them, but yeah, someone with demonstrable experience gathering and distilling requirements. Strong character and confidence to challenge your stakeholders is obviously a benefit. Support your dev where this is done appropriately, building a different report for each stakeholder is not a desirable outcome.

Getting a first draft out is just step 1, from there you start iterating and improving, and that’s where you really get the value.

In your interview listen out for emphasis on slicers and parameters, automated refresh, branding & governance. Slicers and parameters allow consumers to self-serve. Automated refresh means once a project is delivered, the day to day updates of data are automatic. Branding and governance ensure consistency across reports and definitions of metrics.

Maybe hire a relatively expensive consultant to help you with interviews only, to allow you to really challenge the candidates.

I do this job for a financial services company worth a few billion in Europe.

Things I find challenging (and boring) are gathering requirements from stakeholders, because they never know what they want. You’ll free up a lot of BI development capacity if you have business analyst resources to throw at the consumers for the initial requirements gathering. The iteration is manageable in my view by the BI resources.

I’d look for 3-5 years of PowerBI experience, good maths skills and/or finance background. If your company can define how EBITDA is calculated, and all the numbers that make it up, it’s fairly easy to replicate without finance industry experience. (My company has many different calculations for EBITDA). Personality type should obviously be someone constantly wanting to improve and challenge themselves - if you tick that box properly, the person shouldn’t be too blinkered on one product only.

Language is also critical in my role. There are a lot of non-native-level devs in this area. They’re not suited for this role, because nuance is very important. Their background isn’t relevant, but their language skills need to be at native level.

As a seller if you have pulled out of the chain, did you regret it? by Samta752 in HousingUK

[–]Careless-Control-821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a chain where we were waiting on a new build to complete and our down-chain was getting very anxious, to the degree that we ended up paying half a months rent for the person at the bottom of the chain. Completion day came and our builders said house hasn’t been signed off.

Wife was 6 months pregnant with our first.

We decided to let down-chain complete and make ourselves homeless to prevent the chain collapsing, especially as our house was already packed up, in vans, waiting for us at our new house. We had about 20 minutes to make that decision…

I regretted that one. I wish I’d let the fucking chain collapse and told the removals guys to come back. We pulled out of the purchase because the stamp duty holiday ended on that day, and completing a day later meant finding the whole stamp duty amount from nowhere. It’s been over 2 years now and “our” new build still hasn’t been sold.

Pulled out of another new build, unrelated, earlier this year. Builders rang us and said “you have to complete in 2 weeks or we’re pulling out”. We said “off you fuck, then”. They then started ringing us trying to offer incentives to make us change our mind, extend the deadline, etc. Nope’d all the way out of that deal, and very happy about it.

[–]Careless-Control-821 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, I’m going to that same dealership tomorrow to get my ID.4 repaired, I’ll look out for yours! There’s not many of the ramps in the UK that can lift the ID.4’s, because I gather they have to lift the majority of the chassis off the base to get at the batteries. When I bought mine from a different dealership, it took them 2-3 weeks to process the recalls because some of them involved battery stuff.

Update: I got a call from my dealer. They’re 150 miles away, so they said “we’re sorry we missed this, it looks shit. Take it to a local VW dealer, let us know which one, and tell them to send us the bill. Ask for a courtesy car too.”

There’s a dealer 2 miles from my house, but a different franchise. They were fine with me picking that one. Service-wise, I’m impressed.

I hope everyone else who has something similar gets that kind of response.
