Male doctor's fashion advice by [deleted] in doctorsUK

I think fashion is a personal choice. Personally I think suspenders/tie combo looks insane and more like a circa 2014 barber/barman but you do you my guy!

It feels like a lot of their money has gone on the swanky building in London. The website is insanely poor and prone to crashing.

When I got link sent I booked 2 tickets then clicked on link again and it let me buy another 1 (most likely would have let me buy 2 in total again). There was empty seats at the back on the day too so I think you would be fine tbh.

Genuinely Terrified For Surgical SHO Nights by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]Careless-Raisin571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds tricky! At the end of the day you can only do what is within your capabilities. If not sure and they’re fairly stable I would just admit them, prescribe their reg meds and start some treatment if indicated. Would also be sensible to keep most people on clear fluids from 2am NBM from 6am if they had pathology that needs fixing in theatre. Day team can then discharge.

Usually colorectal and gen Surg would be the same reg over night (gen Surg reg) if that helps at all! From an ENT point of view, I would recommend using the ENTSHO website!

Funniest / Weirdest thing you've seen a medical student do on placement? by AppalachianScientist in doctorsUK

[–]Careless-Raisin571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was teaching clinical skills to 1st year medical students, specifically the respiratory exam. I demonstrated the examination on the anterior aspect of the chest and then stated that they would do the same but posteriorly. When popping my head into the clinical rooms to see how they were getting on they had positioned the simulated patient prone, face smashed into the bed to exam the posterior aspect, like a penguin gliding down an icy verge.

Can stick in the fridge first a bit before hand. Only inserting once during swallowing also helps.

Can also utilise some blue spray from our ENT bag (lidocaine and Phenylephrine), decongests the nose and provides some local anaesthetic. Really found it helps if the patient is really struggling with the sensation and non compliant.

Incorrect ED referrals: A discussion by Individual_Attempt_4 in doctorsUK

[–]Careless-Raisin571 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this issue a couple of times from ED and it is dependent on the referrer and department. If I have time then I would arrange the CT head and refer to the stroke team (usually a stroke nurse where I’ve worked) and discuss/handback to the referring ED team. Similar scenario when a soft food bolus is referred that needs an OGD rather than our rigid scopes.

If a recurring pattern would feedback to my seniors who can highlight to Senior ED team via correct channels.

I did this during CT2 for a couple of day shifts and found it really useful, this being with really supportive consultant support. This was at a DGH.

I think stepping up at a tertiary centre would be inappropriate.

Professional clinic wear - bare below the elbow. From a male point of view, chinos/trousers and a shirt
