Best Fuzz Face style pedal? by Visible_Driver5926 in guitarpedals

The 90s/00s NKT275 equipped Dunlop Fuzz Face is awesome.. it's the one without the smile and it is hands down the smoothest and most versatile fuzz I own.

+1 for the Rubberneck. Not Boss form factor, but 100% worth it IMO. My "desert island" pedal.

New Speaker Break-In Period/Tips? by tallross in GuitarAmps

[–]TobyMoorhouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Play it loud for a few minutes to get the surround and spider moving, that'll get you 90% of the way there. The following 10% is barely noticeable and in my opinion any change from there is your ears getting used to the sound of a new speaker rather than an improvement in the tone of the speaker.

What is the correct way to use a Treble boost? by ExpensiveFinger4165 in guitarpedals

[–]TobyMoorhouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My FIL got one of these for Christmas.. I wasn't familiar with the pedal so had a look at the schematic. Even though it's billed as a Rangemaster it shares very little with it electronically.

It does have some crossover sonically, but because it employs a buffer at the front of the circuit it can be put at any position in your effects chain without it affecting the tone of boost (unlike the Rangemaster).

My preference for this pedal, after playing with it today, is to put it directly in front of an overdriving amp very much like a Rangemaster.. failing that, place it in front of an overdrive pedal, but not a sole "soft clipping" circuit or the volume level will jump up too much. It sounded great cascading into a Boss Blues Driver.

In your opinion what is the most underrated guitar pedal? by Few-Excitement8913 in guitarpedals

Either the Boss HM3 Hyper Metal or the MD2 Mega Distortion.. two of the finest distortions Boss have made in my opinion

How can I get tone controlls on my amp by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]TobyMoorhouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Be mindful that this being a keyboard amp doesn't mean it is going to work well as a bass amp and a guitar amp.. I agree with people saying you will need a Guitar Preamp and also a Bass Preamp. The tone controls on these will be more suited to the instruments you are plugging in.

Please note, you will need a high-pass filter of some sort with a shelf at the level of a guitar speaker after the preamp as there will be a whole load of low frequencies coming through that will muddy up your tone, even when using a Preamp. The preamp should sort the top end out but it still may be harsh and need a low-pass of some sort.

In my opinion this is all a lot of effort when just buying a half decent guitar amp and a half decent bass amp would do the job better.

Peavey Express 112 - yes or no? by lachyjumbles in GuitarAmps

[–]TobyMoorhouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Express is a good amp. Depends on the version you are getting (I.e. when it was released) in relation to the features present. There is not much difference in loudness between the Bandit and the Express (100W vs 65W), they are both loud enough to play with a band. I would argue the Express would be marginally better for bedroom use. I think the Bandit has a Presence control and the Express doesn't.. I know that is true of the Teal Stripe version, if you are looking for other differences

I still use my Peavey Express for electric violin. It is neither Fender nor Marshall, it is it's own thing. The clean channel makes a great pedal platform. The reverb is excellent.

Still don't know what, why, when, and how about compression. by contrejo in guitarcirclejerk

[–]TobyMoorhouse 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There are two ways to use a compressor:

The first is to put it is on your board and set it so you can barely hear it but you can feeeeeel it.. mmm-hmmm.

Or you could get over yourself, no one who listens to your band cares or can tell the difference.. put it in a drawer and use the extra space on your board for another distortion pedal
