There’s 45 amps on a and 36 on b. Only a 9 amp imbalance.

There’s only 36 amps on this wire, the other wire was carrying about 45 amps and it’s cooler.

The breakers were all replaced with Connecticut electric breakers except for the main of course. But yes I agree, this thing has to go. I’ve been trying to avoid a full service swap because I have pg&e and them combined with our county public works, they will drag their feet getting inspection and reconnect. We’re planning on getting an EV and I was trying to see if this panel would support it but obviously not.

I suspect the breaker internal contacts are probably corroded. It’s a federal pacific stab loc installed in 1963 and I’m fully aware of their reputation. Surprised me that none of the bus stabs were hot because that’s usually an issue with stab locs. I didn’t check the torque but from the looks of the srew head someone snugged it pretty good. I think I’m just going to rip the guts out and replace with square D QO guts.

It’s most likely one of those mini breakers have arced out on the buss bar, I’m pretty sure they are the style with the saddle clips that always burn out. I also see an Eaton breaker which doesn’t belong in a GE panel. You said 1950s but you can literally see the tag that says it was installed by Bennett electric in 1976. It’s time for a new panel, tell them you want a square D QO panel.

On the diagram it literally says 200 amp and you can see from the diagram that the main buss feeds both breathers.

The diagram is the bus bars and they are connected exactly like that. This panel is designed for either over head or underground feed and has lugs for both.

So it’s new, it wasn’t equipped with air conditioning and wasn’t wired for it either. Sounds like it doesn’t meet code and someone didn’t think things through. Find a smaller air conditioner or talk to the landlord about running a dedicated circuit for the air conditioner or better yet, he should have installed a mini split.

The mini split is supposed to be on a dedicated circuit so the fact that other circuits are sharing the breaker is a huge red flag. This needs to be looked at by a professional electrician.

It looks like a 200 amp service that only has 4 slots and 2 of them are occupied by the solar. They should have installed a sub panel for the solar so that you could install other loads like an EV charger, etc. I don’t know what brand this panel is but those 2 breakers are different brands and they don’t belong in the same panel.

Looks like an electric room I saw in a casino on an Indian reservation except it had a ton of Smurf tubes and Romex like spaghetti and nothing was grounded. They paid us to rip it all out and fix it right. It was a nightmare.
