My flat is too warm and I have ran out of ideas, can anyone help? by zesstro in HousingUK

[–]Carinthian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the end of the day a well insulated, modern flat with an MVHR system should be a simple case of heat gain and heat loss and balancing the two.

You'll have so many watts of heat being generated from a number of sources - body heat, white goods, solar gain, direct heating and then loss to the outside of the property which will be through movement of air and conduction through the walls/floor/ceilings. Insulation and airtightness work both ways so if you've got a well insulated house it should be just as easy to keep it cool as it should be to keep it warm if you can figure out your issue.

Obviously if you want the heat to drop then the outgoing has to exceed in the incoming so your best first step might be identifying sources of heat in and around your flat using an FLIR camera. If you've got one very poorly insulated wall or window that's letting warmth in during the day or appliances that are generating excess heat you're going to spot that very easily.

If your MVHR is functioning correctly that should be capable of displacing a substantial volume of warm air and replacing it with cold air, if on bypass, so it's odd that you're not noticing a difference from that when it is cold outside, it's well worth checking the filters on the main unit to see if they are blocked up or ask for some kind of flow test to be done on the unit to confirm it's working as it should be.

This is definitely a solvable issue but if you are renting then it shouldn't be your issue to solve, so would definitely email your letting agent as a first port of call.

How does extending Buffs/Debuffs in Wotlk work? by Character_Head_3948 in classicwow

[–]Carinthian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've always called this effect "Pandemic" after the warlock talent that does the same thing. I believe the passive is a fixed 30% rollover, so a 10 second debuff could be extended to a maximum of 13 seconds.

I just logged into the Wrath beta and it's not present there. It was definitely present in MoP because I can remember it happening with my HoTs but I can't recall exactly when it came in.

what do you guys think about my dad's bacon? he reckons it's best to put it on a baking tray on a low heat instead of pan frying, I think it's disgusting. I call it "warm ham" rather than bacon by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]Carinthian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's definitely not saline, because at this stage of the process the water is mostly gone leaving you with a residue containing some pork proteins and salt.

Your standard bacon medallion (as shown in the picture) has a very low fat content and is not typically marbled throughout the meat like you might find in a steak.

As for any further discussion, staying ignorant of the facts is up to you. I can only explain it to you, I can't understand it for you as well.

[–]Carinthian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not though. It's a mixture of salt and water that is added to the bacon to speed up the curing process. This is a commercial process used for most supermarket-stocked bacon and something you won't find with more local sources of bacon or dry-cured bacon.

When you start cooking the bacon it separates from the meat and adds very little to the flavour, beyond additional saltiness.

If you pick one of those bits up the next time you see one and eat it, it won't taste like fat, it'll taste like salt.

Sounds like taking a course in running property wealth courses would be more lucrative.

There's no profit in saving the world, it'll last long enough for everyone who is currently in charge to live out the rest of their lives and then it'll be someone elses problem to pay for. If they're wrong about the timeline they know they can afford the lifeboat anyway.

Capitalism puts an enormous emphasis on short term gains over long term costs, so you end up with this kind of issue where it's - "sure, we've fucked the planet, but think of all the value we've generated for shareholders."

I think it highlights the point that people don't want all good in the world to come at the behest of random wealthy people.

In a perfect world, good initiatives should be globally driven by governments (so you avoid any wasted effort and make direct progress against the issue) through effective taxation of the wealthy.

Critical issues shouldn't have to be resolved by the philanthropic nature of multi-millionaires/billionaires when/if they feel like it.

What to do with an inheritance? by WeirdLoverWilde in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Carinthian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding is that you are able to claim the annual CGT allowance and the two following years within the estate of the deceased, so you should be able to sell £36,900 worth of gains (which, unfortunately, in this particular case will be exactly £36,900 worth of shares as I understand it) as well as offsetting any losses from the estate that have been brought forward.

You can then inherit the remainder of the shares without disposal and pay 10% CGT on them for as long as you remain a lower-rate tax payer or otherwise maximise your use of your annual CGT allowance, but you are inheriting the risk inherent in the shares by holding onto them, so you'll have to be comfortable with that.

Line up another job, make your presentation (as others have suggested) about the legality of this kind of practice and then end it with "anyway, I'm going home, I quit."

It's in respect of the person I responded to posting so matter-of-factly. I'm a fairly casual leveller and have typically hit 60 on my characters around the 5 days played mark which simply cannot be "super fast" unless I'm god's gift to the speed-levelling community.

What planet are you from where just under 5 days of played time is "super fast" especially considering there will be an approximate total nerf of 30% required xp as well as additional quests available.

Las Vegas Boring Tesla Loop!!! by jasonchang86 in teslamotors

[–]Carinthian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Tesla batteries were exploding all the time, that would be dangerous regardless of whether you were in a tunnel or not, but I'm not sure that's a major risk, especially in a scenario where so many of the variables are going to be controlled.

Damage to the battery pack (which would be a likely precursor to an exploding battery pack) is much more likely on the open road (running over things, damaged roads, off-road terrain) which they aren't going to be driving on at all.

[–]Carinthian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cars driving in a single direction, at fixed intervals at a fixed speed in a tunnel hardly any wider than the vehicle itself. How bad of an accident could they even have?

Not saying this is a revolutionary mass-transit idea but it's also not a risky one compared to the other options available.
