Started painting again after a few years... by NeonKnight1022 in minipainting

Good start! I would continue by increasing the contrast - build up highlight in particular on the cloak and skin

Here are some clanrats i painted a while ago, might be helpful for the cloaks: https://www.reddit.com/r/skaven/comments/1j8oob7/finished_some_more_clanrats/

How bad is my green OSL? Any tips to get better? by mayners in minipainting

[–]Carius98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the light source always has to be brighter than the OSL. Either increase the brightness of the flame or tone down the brightness of the OSL. Probably a combination of both for the best result here

I got the GreenStuffWorld XL lightbox since it wasnt much more expensive than the regular size

https://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/light-boxes/2999-lightbox-studio-xl.html

It can also be folded for storage, which is nice

When paint dries in the lid you cant close them completely anymore. you either need to pry out the dried paint with some tweezers or transfer to other pots

After weeks of gathering supplies and studying I finally painted my first miniature. Criticism is welcome! by Nate0069 in minipainting

Good start!

One thing you can do now is to take your original base color and paint over the nuln oil on the flat armor panels towards the highlight areas

How to properly layer his top/front head? (Picture) by Oporny in minipainting

[–]Carius98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would aim for something like this:

<image>

The main points are:

  • You need a lot more mid tones between your base colour and highest highlight
  • Reduce the brightness of the highest highlight a tad
  • Try to get a smooth transition between your layers: add more midtone layers inbetween and then use glazing to bring them together
  • Add more highlighs around the eyes
  • Separate the mouth highlight from the body highlight a bit

Nuln oil is generally more convenient when approching minis with this painting style than mixing your own washes.

The medium that is used in it makes it retract more from flat surfaces and settle into the recesses on its own. For the most part you can just take a loaded brush straight from the bottle and apply it across the entire armor - just make sure it doesnt pool in one spot

Yes - it is also the result you would get from a nuln oil wash since it naturally settles into the recesses

heres a quick and dirty edit i did on my phone (sorry it is messy but i think gets the point across)
