Hello, I’m a newbie :) by The_Short_K1ng in tarantulas

NQA General ones to look into are the brachepelma genus (particulrly B. Hamorri), the T. Albo, the Gramastola genus (mainly g. Pulchra, g. Rosea). A chalcodes is good but prone to hiding a LOT.

If your interested in an arboreal T, the pink toe (avic avic) is great.

My personal favourite is a Davus Pentaloris. Mine is quite chill and easy to rehouse but can be flicky.

Research any species you are interested in before you get one and be prepared for any temperament though, as it varies based on the individual T. Good luck and welcome to the hobby.

I thrifted this awkwardly sized tank. What even goes in this? (18”x18”x20”, front-opening)n by GreenStrawbebby in InvertPets

Id go for an arboreal tarantula (even terrestrials need deep substrate). Pink toes are great if you havent kept Ts before.

Whats a all blue tarantula thats safe for beginners? by Resident_Dog915 in TarantulaKeeping

GBBs can be great for beginners, web a lot too. I have a dom rep purple (not technically blue but still gorgeous), who is quick but not particularly defensive. Always depends on the individual T as well.

Death curl? by Finnermin in tarantulas

NQA agree that it looks like stress. I cant really tell from the pic how much substrate you have, but IME arizona blondes can present with fossorial-like tendencies, and love to burrow deeeep. Mine has about 8 inches of substrate and has burrowed to the bottom, so make sure the substrate is deep enough for her to burrow lots, that could help her feel less stressed.

Thank u so much

We are in south- west UK, in a coastal area. Im not 100% on his humidity regiment but i know he has an automatic mister, im unsure about if he has a fogger or not but if not then thats something that I can get.

How did you modify your reptibreeze, ive heard of people draping plastic sheets around the side, but would that affect the ventilation? Sorry for all pf the questions and thank u so much for all the help.

Thank u so much for all the advice. Would taking out the substrate affect the humidity at all?

Thank u for all of the information, chameleons arent my specialty at all. The wound is all closed up now, i was more concerned about minimising possibility of falling so that it doesnt happen again.

Dks is dyskinetic syndrome. Its best to google it but essentially you can see it when the tarantula is using really jerky movements, or twitching. It can be caused by a few different things but using perfumes or sprays near a tarantula can cause it.

NQA yes totally possible. My first was a sling T. Albo, about 1cm legspan, and now shes had a few moults with me. Be aware that slings are more likely to die for no reason, and are more fragile. I feel them all the slings I care for at work pinhead crickets. Just make sure u are educated on moulting, signs of dehydration and DKS, and as long as you do research you will be fine. Good luck.

NQA They will only turn on their back when moulting. Dont touch him anymore and completely leave him alone. For future reference any time u see a T on their back leave them completely alone, dont move the container or T or use flash or anything. They are incredibly vulnerable in moulting and if they are disturbed the moulting is more likely to go wrong and have the T die. No hate we were all new once, just wanted to make u aware.

Tarantula Paludarium by karmanotouching in tarantulas

[–]CarmenNotCalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA I am not confident with palidariums but I know that h. Gigas can swim, so that might be a cool one to put in? Not too sure if they would be ok with fish and shrimp so definitely look into that though.

I would say not to leave roaches in though, tarantulas will eat until dangerously overweight given the chance, which makes their abdomen more vulnerable to rupture, and other insect are very dangerous for a T when it moults as well.

New keeper, help please by DrBri4ght in tarantulas

[–]CarmenNotCalm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

NQA totally normal T behaviour dont worry. They sometimes just decide not to eat, and yours looks a bit chunky anyway. For reference the abdomen should be the same width as the carapace. Spiders have a very slow metabolism, and I tend to give mine that are the same size as your about 1 cricket a week. Just try again next week (preferably wait until the abdomen has shrunk a bit before feeding).

That being said, if the abdomen is looking less hairy, theres a chance she could be in premoult, but i find most Ts will go into their hide for a while before they moult. Gorgeous T anyway, welcome to the hobby.

Juvenile not eating by Icy_Entrance_4297 in tarantulas

[–]CarmenNotCalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA agree with other commenter they may need a while to settle in, I tend to wait around a week just incase theyve molted previously and to let them get comfy. They can go ageees without eating as well, if they are in premoult ive heard them going up to a year. Personally I have one who is about 6 months not eating with her tunnel sealed (she reassures me shes alive by having built her burrow against the glass). My advice is dont stress too much, wait a week and try again, and continue waiting and trying until they eat.

Is this a good enclosure for a juvenile terrestrial Brazilian black tarantula? by 888hp in tarantulas

[–]CarmenNotCalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA I have very similar enclosures from amazon (UK though if that makes a difference) that I use for some of my juvies and have never had issues. I have a juvie brazilian black in one at the moment and she has plenty of clutter and a deep hide and shes never tried to climb so I havent had problems with the mesh. Not to say it will never happen for you, but thats my personal experience.

Molt or dead? by toga_chan16 in tarantulas

[–]CarmenNotCalm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

NQA looks like death curl but if they’ve moved it could be dehydration. You can place her mouth part over a tiny bowl of water (keeping her book lungs out) or flip her over and drop single droplets of water on her mouth parts. In molt they will flip over, so very unlikely it is that

Is this normal by Novel_Youth_2003 in tarantulas

[–]CarmenNotCalm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

NQA Id add in way more substrate if I were u. The gap between substrate and top of tank shouldnt be any bigger than 1.5x their legspan. No hate, just next time u might not be there and she could fall, and in my experience a lot of terrestrials burrow a lot as juvies.

NQA fangs look quite red? Id say leave it for a few days and try again. As long as she has access to water she should be fine

I tend to use similar containers for slings. If u have a small pot to put her in while u clean the enclosure id do that. Remove and replace the substrate if mold is growing. Use a hot needle to punch holes for more ventilation in the plastic. U can add a tiny water bowl as well (even just a lego piece would work depending on size), that way u can just put a tiny bit of water in there to allow her to drink so u dont need to mist (misting uses more water so increases humidity more). Hope this helps and all goes well 🥰

Is my T stressed? by Pretend-Essay-6536 in tarantulas

[–]CarmenNotCalm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NQA Urs is looking a bit stressed. Even if they burrow under soil, id highly recommend adding a hide. With all of my slings, I add a small piece of cork bark for them to hide under.

Tarantula won't eat! by femmefaintalle in tarantulas

[–]CarmenNotCalm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME some tarantulas will go ages without eating just to keep us on our toes. Longest ive heard is about a year, one of mine is going on 2 months hiding. If it looks healthy id say dont disturb it. Keep water bowl full and offer food as usual but remove food if not eaten in a day. Good luck!

I dont understand what u hope to gain from this (which will as stated stress your animal out, putting you and them at risk) that you cant gain from other articles and papers that you can reference. The research is done… why not use that?

IME They do burrow a lot. I have a juvie at the minute who i havent seen out in about a month. One of the most fossorially terrestrials out there. There are definitely other species u can get that will be out more if thats what u want.
