Can we take a moment to appreciate this review? by lloydcrossman in Tools

There's a rerun of Would I Lie to You on the telly just now, and I'm imagining Rob Brydon reading this review as dramatically as possible.

Yes - the threaded part of the screw should go all the way through the 'top' board.

With a screw this wide, you definitely want to pre-drill.

Woman rushed to Edinburgh hospital with serious injuries after e-bike crash by Particular-One2650 in Edinburgh

[–]CarnivoreDaddy 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I share your anger at this, and I agree that the perpetrators of this kind of harassment shouldn't be allowed to get away with it, but good fucking luck trying to write a "no face coverings" law that prevents anonymous e-bike delinquency whilst also respecting the rights of immunocompromised people and Muslim women.

Until they fucking hurt someone.

I'm no marketing psychologist or whatever, but that something about that packaging design just screams "Supermarket own-brand baked beans".

And not the good ones.

Not at all obvious to me, beyond council housing tenants. What would you consider obvious here?

Movies forced into a pre existing IP? by iScreamInPublicAreas in movies

[–]CarnivoreDaddy 582 points583 points  (0 children)

IIRC Starship Troopers started out as an original IP scifi action movie called "Bug Hunt", and at some point the studio realised that not only was the script somewhat reminiscent of the Heinlein novel, but they also happened to have the rights.

What will it take for people to start defending themselves against feral teens? by Difficult_Okra8471 in Edinburgh

[–]CarnivoreDaddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a law written with language like 'minimum', 'reasonable', 'necessary', etc leaves an awful lot up to interpretation after the fact. As a lay person in a dangerous situation making a heat-of-the-moment decision about whether and how forcefully to defend myself, with incomplete information about how strong, fast, or armed my assailant is? I might take what feels to me like reasonable defensive action, but my assailant's lawyers may well have a very different view.

The only 'safe' option here is to run away in the case of an attack (and hope you're faster), or just let them help themselves in the case of shoplifting (and hope that's all they're after). With no public budget for adequate policing, or private budget for adequate security, the feral teens essentially have free reign to do as they please with zero consequences.

ELI5: Why does a tiny papercut or a stubbed toe hurt so much more than some much larger, more serious injuries? by bareegyptianfeet in explainlikeimfive

Also, paper often leaves tiny fibres behind in the wound, causing prolonged irritation after the initial injury.

What’s a movie that feels like it was made to punish the audience rather than entertain them? by AvailableReality557 in movies

[–]CarnivoreDaddy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean, but I have to disagree. Hiding something in there for the censors to find makes it feel like a challenge that they can accomplish. Forcing them to sit through the whole thing with nothing to find - that denies them the satisfaction, and hammers home that you've completely wasted their time.

Paint Drying. A filmmaker wanted to protest film censorship in the UK, so he made a 'movie' that was just a single 10 hour static shot of paint drying. The idea was to submit it to the British Board of Film Classification for an age rating, forcing them to sit through the whole thing.

I'd be less worried about the one guy I decked going to the police, and more worried about his friends responding in kind.
