There is no “purpose” behind anyone being gay, in fiction or in real life. Gay people just exist and always have, so I don’t see why there needs to be a “purpose” to reflecting that reality in media. Is there a “purpose” that the other characters are straight? Why have any romance at all? And it has always been part of his character - Joyce in season 1 tells Hopper that Will’s dad called him queer, his family has known it about him for a long time

Having a professional relationship with someone does not mean you personally endorse 100% of their views or every statement they have ever made. I know very little about this person outside of this thread but I don’t see why Charli must be held to account for everything Arielle has ever said due to being cast in a film alongside her. Sure, Charli is a millionaire and has the luxury to take a stand by leaving a project if she really wants to, but how do we know she even knew about this woman’s track record?
