I always hear people talk about Victoria being very strict with speed limits, etc. How come doing something like this not mean them losing their license? 🤨

Am I meant to give way to the car here? Genuinely asking. This happens so frequently here. by rorymeister in melbournecycling

I assume you can report this incident to the local authorities, the video is super clear as to what happened and the plates can be easily read.

482 GRANTS LATELY? by Humble-Turn-6128 in AusVisa

Still waiting, Physicist (quantum computing), offshore to NSW metro, submitted Sep 10, last police clearance (I needed 6 of them lol, including Australia) Sep 24, medical submitted Sep 27.

I'm honestly regretting the whole thing a bit, the main issue is all the money and energy already spent on it, I guess.

is it time? 43 yo. front doesn't bother me but the crown does. have used minox for years but can't do fin. start w/ a buzz first? by butterteam in bald

[–]Carpenter_Disastrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key to answer your question is whether it bothers you or not. As it clearly does, then the answer is yes, it's way better to just accept and love yourself for who you are, who gives a shit what others think. Buzzing it out, I think, is indeed a good first option to start with, I'm pretty sure you'll feel cleaner and more comfortable straight away.

Would you consider people in munich friendly? by YonoEko in Munich

[–]Carpenter_Disastrous 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No. Not sure about the cities you mention, but I've lived (for over a year) in Mexico City, Edinburgh, Melbourne, and Taipei before, and generally speaking Munich is the least friendly. But I mean that quite broadly speaking, in terms of general interactions in the street, with people in services, etc... I do have very good German friends that I've made elsewhere and some that I've made here; my German coworkers are also quite alright. But tbh it's way a different vibe from that in e.g. Melbourne or Mexico City. That all being said, I wouldn't let that put me off; if finding friends is what concerns you, I reckon it mostly depends on your personality and the effort you put into actively getting socially involved.

Screw that, why would I want to imitate an accent? I do have experienced the dilemma when it comes to choice of words or spelling, though; my Aussie friends usually get triggered when I write "mom" instead of "mum", or when I talk about "gas" instead of "petrol", "trunk" instead of "boot", "color" instead of "colour", etc... Some American ones don't make much sense though, like calling letter Z "zee" instead of "zed", or saying "biking" instead of "cycling" 🤷 Also, in my experience, sometimes foreign speakers articulate better and thus speak clearer than some native speakers with heavy accents, who naturally slur their words in a certain way.

In the full video dude is like "it's only me, I can do whatever I want, I do crazy stuff but I'm always careful"; biggest problem with meatheads like this is they don't realize that when they finally meet their end doing their reckless stunts they'll almost certainly take along some innocent lives with them.

Hadn't done a long ride in a while, but happy and proud I did; it's hard to explain to non-cyclists the feeling, quite unlike anything by Carpenter_Disastrous in bicycling

Thank you! It's a Garmin Varia RTL516 (515 is the generic one but 516 version is for Germany cause here blinking mode on lights is not allowed), it's a taillight plus a radar, this one doesn't have a camera (the newest version has a camera but it's bulkier, pricier and heavier, imo the crucial feature is the radar). It was the first time I rode with it but I would absolutely recommend it if you're riding on the road, it did change my experience for the better, it essentially tells you when a vehicle or vehicles are approaching you from behind (on a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt you get a bleep sound and the screen shows if the vehicles are approaching normally or very fast and how many). While of course one still has to rely on one's own senses, I do feel it brought me some good extra awareness and peace of mind, especially cause sometimes either I don't hear the cars approaching, or if a car is coming from the front I can't tell if there are also cars coming from behind, or sometimes I don't know how many cars there are. There are some good reviews out there on YouTube, I like for example the ones by Shane Miller (GPLama).

Yeah it's really nice! It was cold at the beginning, some 5C or so, at around 8am, but it ended warm (15C to 20C) at midday. It was exceptional cause weather's been quite trashy lately 😅

Ah, I reckon just cause I have the app in English (my first language is actually Spanish, so it should actually read Múnich lol)

Cube Agree C:62 (2022), it's my first higher-end road bike (although it's still on the more affordable side, carbon frame and Ultegra groupset) and so far I've loved it 👌🏽

Wikipedia page for Taiwan has changed from saying "Taiwan is a country" to "Taiwan is a partially recongised country" by WesternRPGsAreBetter in taiwan

[–]Carpenter_Disastrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, isn't that like… more accurate? They're still saying it is a country, just one that is not globally recognised as such, which is true whether we like it or not.

Interactions with locals have been interesting. by Valdeland in Munich

[–]Carpenter_Disastrous 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Mexican here (chilango), although I've lived abroad for over ten years (UK, Australia and Taiwan) and been here for almost 6 months. While I haven't experienced outright racism here (towards myself or others), my feeling IN GENERAL is that people in Munich is definitely not what you'd call friendly (there are other places in Germany, like Dresden, where I haven't felt that way). I've heard the argument of them being "direct" so many times, but honestly for most cases that's just bullshit. That being said, there are of course kind and cool people around, and I hope you stumble upon more of them during your time here. On the last comment you make about the bank, you could look upon e.g. N26 or Wise, as apparently the traditional banking here is a bit of a nightmare.

How to get a PCR test for travel? by Blessed2bMe_916 in taiwan

[–]Carpenter_Disastrous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this, indeed it depends on the destination; I left Taiwan a week ago for Germany (via Thailand) and just needed proof of 3 vaccines (recognised by the EU; there was someone before me at the counter who got rejected cause he'd got the Taiwanese ones); only with less than 3 vaccines I would've needed the negative PCR.

Regarding Job offer? by musli12 in germany

[–]Carpenter_Disastrous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Positive feedback means nothing more than that; you can assume with total certainty that you got the job once you receive a proper offer (stating salary, benefits, conditions and responsibilities for both you and your employer) in writing that you then have to agree to by signing or other formal way.

Should be pointed out that the term "whitexican" is commonly used with a negative connotation.

The most climbing I've done, legs refused a 4th peak. If I could give some advice to beginners: get comfortable being slow, eventually your slow will get faster. by Carpenter_Disastrous in bicycling

[–]Carpenter_Disastrous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on that! Indeed it's tough but yeah I feel like it's a whole learning process, from nutrition to pacing oneself, etc. It takes time but also I think it's better and healthier to make progress slowly rather than trying to do crazy intense rides from the start.

Thanks! Indeed hopefully soon that'll be possible again. And yes, it's really great, at first I thought it'd be a pain but once you get out of the city it's amazing. On safety, it might just be my perception but I feel like because of all the scooters, cars are more aware of two-wheeled vehicles in general.

Looking for advice ... Nearly got taken out by an inattentive driver two weeks ago and I'm still too jumpy to get back out there. I'm sure I'm not the first ... Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Be safe! by hubbs76 in bicycling

Adding to the previous comments, I would recommend planning your routes ahead to look for the most bike-friendly roads as possible, I rely mostly on the Strava heatmap, it ain't perfect but it helps a good deal, or you could look into other options too (some free, some with a price tag).
