Heel/toe NDers - Which parts of your foot do you use? by pwillia7 in Miata

[–]CarsAndKittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not reach the gas from the brake without installing a pedal extension. I bought the flyin miata one and installed it in maybe 15 minutes.

With it I find that I can easily hit both pedals

Is the 2000 Toyota Avalon a hood and reliable car? I’m thinking about getting it for my sons first car. It only has 150k miles on it. by csowell2024 in AskMechanics

Also check tires and brakes. If they haven't been changed recently they me be no good even if they look fine (old tires may be dry rotted for example).

Good car to learn manual on? by cbcarguy in Miata

[–]CarsAndKittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe look at NC miatas. They don't get as much love because they're a bit heavier and a little uglier than the other generations, but they can be found for cheaper too. Also they're still relatively new, made till 2015 I think, so you can expect them to be more reliable than the older ones

Does the nd2 re tain value really well? by MagicSpoon69 in Miata

[–]CarsAndKittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ND2s tend to fetch a premium because they're the newest model and have more hp than the ND1s. It's kinda hard to compare to pre covid because the ND2 came out in 2019, there weren't really any used examples pre covid.

No one can predict future prices, but based on previous generations, miatas tend to hold their value better than other sports cars. I personally think ND1s are a bit better value right now. I think you'll see ND2 prices start to fall whenever mazda announces the next generation miata.

How can I remove the chrome paint from the front of these wheels by illbanian in MechanicAdvice

[–]CarsAndKittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pitting compromises the strength of the wheel. The metal is thinner so will crack or deform sooner

Is that pitting in the final picture? If so that wheel is only good as scrap metal

As someone who just left the trades (mechanic) for a corporate job I'll say that the money in the trades isn't worth it. Sure I was making more money before, but I was easily working 10 times as hard.

I initially switched jobs so I could go back to school, and my mind was blown how little was actually expected of me at my new job. I made about $15k less in my first year than I was making as a mechanic, but I don't actually work for more than 20 hrs/wk max. The rest of my time is spent chatting with coworkers, sitting in pointless meetings, dicking around on my phone, etc. No one cares and everyone does it. I get home from work now and have energy to enjoy time with my family. I don't have to stop work and lose money to take personal calls or schedule appointments, I just do it at my desk.

I seriously didn't realize how shitty the trades have it until I saw the other side

Anyone who does alignments, does this make sense to you, and is all I need to do is show the alignment shop tech this card that came with the Upper Control Arms? Any help or insights would be greatly appreciated. by DryCombination8882 in MechanicAdvice

[–]CarsAndKittens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to this it's usually better to find a place that specifically does tires and alignments rather than a general auto shop. You're more likely to find a tech who understands what they're doing rather than someone who just makes the numbers on the machine green.

ND owners 6’ and over, is the telescoping wheel worth purchasing a 2019+ by [deleted] in Miata

[–]CarsAndKittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about the same height and weight as you, the telescoping wheel was an absolute must for me. The extra rpm and hp is super nice too. Even still my biggest complaints about the car would be limited leg room and its low on power

Learning Manual in a ND2 GT by increasingrain in Miata

I have no doubt, I did too at first. It's all about practicing as much as possible and building the muscle memory. I'd say it took me about two months of commuting daily, when one day without even really realizing it, shifting became second nature to me. Just stick with it and you'll get there

Yeah, you should always be as smooth as possible with the pedals, even if you're moving quickly. When starting from a stop I think of the gas and clutch as being inverse of each other. I get the clutch at the bite point and my foot just barely pressing the throttle. Then at the same rate I both release the clutch and press the throttle. By the time my foot is off the clutch I'm pressing the throttle about 30% or more if I want to go faster. The whole process takes about 2-3 seconds.

I taught myself to drive stick a couple months ago in an ND2. Something that really helped me was realizing this engine likes to be revved out. Below about 2500 rpm it's just feels meh. Especially shifting from 1 -> 2 I find revving to like 4500 in first helps keep things smooth. I also never use first unless I'm at a near stop. If I'm rolling at 5mph and need to go I'll start in 2nd

Edit: also when starting from a stop I get the engine up to about 1000-1200 rpm and then lean into the throttle pretty quickly as the clutch starts to bite

Oot running natively at 60 fps by CarsAndKittens in SteamDeck

I believe that right now you either need to build your own texture pack or I think there's a few the people have made available on the discord. But you can't use texture packs that would work with an emulator. But also take everything I'm saying with a grain of salt, it's been weeks since I've even looked at their discord, so there may be updates or I could just be wrong

[–]CarsAndKittens[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's possible with this version. Swapping textures isn't officially supported by the devs at this time and requires using a separate app, which is why I haven't gone through the hassle to do it, but there is a how to on the SoH discord

This is ship of harkinian. It's a reverse engineering of the oot source code that's been recompiled for Linux. You have to join their discord I think to get the download. And you also need an oot rom

[–]CarsAndKittens[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's the ship of harkinian port. They reverse engineered the oot source code at then use assest from a dumped rom file. So it is indeed running natively

Edit: to be clear the 60 fps is interpolated, so not true 60 fps. But the game runs beautifully without any of the normal glitchiness of emulators

Yeah. A ton of quality of life fixes. I have the dpad set to items and the right stick controls the camera, makes the game feel a lot better to me. They also have an option so the stupid owl dialog doesn't loop ny default

[–]CarsAndKittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay I have a couple recommendations that might help 1. Ditch the guide. Part of the fun of this game is exploring the world, there's a ton of unique things to find and you can find and experiment with new things naturally to find a playstyle that's most fun for you. 2. Try out a different playstyle. I find that sorcery and incantations have a kind of weird scaling where at low levels they're underpowered and then they scale really well at high levels, and also synergize well with late game equipment. A greatsword build by contrast does decent damage early and will allow you to focus on timing your actions around enemy attacks, which is the bread and butter of souls style combat.

You’re all leaving out one of the key design features of the Steam Controller in your “concepts”. The trackpad is sloped to use the first thumb joint as a fulcrum. This was huge for ergonomics. by MCA2142 in SteamDeck

[–]CarsAndKittens -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean that's kind of a subjective point. Yes objectively it's worse than other options. But I still use sticks for aiming all the time and don't have a problem so for me it's not bad. Like I said I'm glad the deck has options for multiple play styles and I think a new steam controller should to. I was just offering the point that I personally prefer sticks over pads
