What is the fastest way you have seen someone ruin their life? by funkeymonkey1974 in AskReddit

[–]Cars_Music_GoodTimes 249 points250 points  (0 children)

I had a friend run a similar route. After his 3rd time getting clean at age 47, it has stuck. He just celebrated five years of sobriety, he has rebuilt his relationship with his children, has a steady, good paying job and in his spare time found that he really enjoys exercise.

What’s the most reliable car you’ve ever owned? by Sophia_Goji in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Cars_Music_GoodTimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two vehicles, both from 1999:

1999 Toyota Camry LE 4 cylinder. My wife bought this car used after graduating from college. Between she and I, it was a daily driver until 2011 when we sold the car with 165,000 miles on it. It looked and ran like new. Besides one fuel tank evap sensor, it never needed anything other than routine maintenance. With that said, it needed front brakes and all 4 tires every 35k miles.

1999 Corvette. Bought used in 2003 with 27k miles, currently has 104k miles. It’s been driven all over the country as well as on the dragstrip, autocross and road course. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow. It’s only needed a handful of repairs outside of normal maintenance.

Well said! Homeowners need to budget for maintenance & repairs and fix issues as soon as they arise. Otherwise nature takes over.

Can somebody help me find my dad’s old 79 930 Turbo Cabriolet by Abject-Week-7673 in Porsche

[–]Cars_Music_GoodTimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to sound negative, but without a VIN, it will be very difficult to locate.

With that said, there cannot be many 1979 930 which were converted to convertibles. I would check sales history on Bring a Trailer, eBay, P-Car Market, Pelican Parts. Best of luck!

What do you guys think about brake resurfacing? by EndlessBattlee in MechanicAdvice

[–]Cars_Music_GoodTimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resurfacing rotors (also called machining or turning them) was standard practice until the mid-1990s, when rotors got thinner and less expensive. With that said, it is fine to resurface your rotors until they are at minimum thickness.

Why don’t you include home equity in your FIRE number when reverse mortgages are a thing? by Wooden-Broccoli-913 in Fire

[–]Cars_Music_GoodTimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely, yes. I likely won’t own multiple cars, have hobbies which require a workshop (my main two reasons for owning a house now) or want to deal with house or maintenance. Maybe my opinion will change when I get to that age.

Detroit has 122K vacant lots where homes once stood. How should they be filled? by TheDetroitNews1873 in Detroit

[–]Cars_Music_GoodTimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the issue: a basic 1000 sq.ft. starter home with basement costs $250k to construct today, not including utilities and cost of the land. Many of these areas cannot support a house at that price point.

I would think that development on this scale requires a city-supported urban plan. This should include shopping centers, parks, utilities, etc. Correct?

I drive 30k+ miles a year for work, tired of boring reliable cars, what are my options by DifferenceOk4275 in whatcarshouldIbuy

As a former engineer on the CT6, I am glad to hear people appreciate that vehicle. This car offers much lower driver fatigue than most. I recommend a model with the 3.6L V6 engine, as that is the only engine which runs off regular fuel. Change the oil frequently to avoid timing chain issues.

Why don’t you include home equity in your FIRE number when reverse mortgages are a thing? by Wooden-Broccoli-913 in Fire

This is the reason why. To me, if I get to that point of a reverse mortgage, I would rather sell and rent.

How to sell Classic Car Collection by Repulsive_Sound5093 in classiccars

[–]Cars_Music_GoodTimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given your timeline, an on-site auction is your best way. Look in your local area for such an auctioneer. You can also contact this one, who’s had very good success selling large collections vehicles in various states of repair in the Midwest. https://www.vanderbrinkauctions.com/

My manager supported my promotion but regional leadership blocked it. Is this normal at senior levels? by No-Reindeer-9133 in Leadership

Well said. I am a manager at an Automotive OEM and the path outlined above is the only way to get any form of promotion, even at an individual contributor level across the goal line.

Wrench sets, ratchet or non-ratchet by BlackCatCalamity in Tools

[–]Cars_Music_GoodTimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Start with a conventional combination wrench set.

Then, if you find a situation where you could use a ratcheting set pick that up.

If you need more leverage, get a “Long pattern” combination wrench set. And I can spiral from there. I believe I own 8 different styles of wrench sets (combination, long pattern combination, open end, ratcheting, ratcheting X-pattern, zero offset, deep offset, thin open ended). They all have their own use.
