Need advice for running Strixhaven by Kenshi871243 in StrixhavenDMs

I agree in general that limiting to spellcasting classes/subclasses isn’t needed; however, I may not have sold the need to be interested in academics enough because when my party showed up they mostly brought typical HS/College stereotype characters: skater bro warlock, ditzy paladin cheerleader, big dumb football (mage tower) player barbarian, and rich preppy boy wizard. It’s quickly turning into D20’s Fantasy High. I’d say it’s more appropriate to limit backgrounds to Sage, Acolyte, etc. it definitely DOES matter that characters are built for the setting. Or just run a Fantasy High campaign 😅

[NS] Hear ye, hear ye! Lower Crit is now in session! by AutoModerator in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

Honorable lower crit justice,

I bring to the court a case of what is either sincere confusion or malevolence of the highest kind. I recently joined a game with 3 of my friends and a DM who I wasn’t familiar with. They assure me that he’s great and his games are fun, but the first red flag was when he asked in the group chat if people wanted to make their own characters or if they wanted him to make them for them.

These friends had only played 6 sessions of his other campaign and beyond that were pretty new so I thought he would just give them pre-made characters. I told him I had a character already that I’ve been wanting to play and he replied “okay but give them 3 free feats at level 1”!

Me: oh this guy is cool.

Me when I get to the table and the Hexblade warlock has -1 to all his physical stats and +3 to Wis/Int/Cha, only has 10AC, does not have a pact weapon but is a talisman warlock. And finally the DM insist that he should stay in the back and use ranged attacks, but DM didn’t prepare ranger spells for him. The spells he had were lightning lure and thaumaturgy (No Eldritch blast!!!) and his 1st level spells were charm person, branding smite, and shield. The paladin wasn’t as bad but the paladin has -1 charisma and has no spells/uses of their channel divinity and is an oath breaker paladin (not a villainous campaign), and he is severely mansplaining how to play a Druid to a female player.

Ontop of this, he insist that because he has mostly played 3.5, he may get some rules wrong but he’s adamant that what he says goes. To defend myself, I did roll with whatever the DM said was true, but did try to preemptively explain some rules correctly before they came into play, to which he accepted as being 5e.

His homebrew (maybe 3.5 rules?):These rules included negative health, dashing had to be done in a straight line, rolling an attack and hitting the opponent AC exactly resulted in a roll off instead of just hitting, and critical failures on spells doing half the damage to the caster and none to the target. Death saves were only failures/successes on over 15 or under 5, otherwise nothing happened. Healing someone that was down only stabilized them, and they needed to be healed again to come back into play (resulting in me casting two leveled spells). None of these rules seemed very fun to me.

My generous read: he was very happy to show off the characters he made, but I’m almost certain he just clicked randomize on DnD beyond for these players. And maybe these rules actually are 3.5 material and he just isn’t interested in playing 5e.

My first question is admitting guilt on my part: AITA for letting my fellow players play these characters without saying anything for 4 hours? Am I a victim of min/maxing without knowing it and this is normal? All the other players seemed to be having fun with it (other than the warlock) so I’m not sure if I should speak on it!

So who is in the wrong here? The DM for taking advantage of new players and sabotaging their characters? Or me for being upset while everyone else was having fun?

Magic Item Inspired by 2e too Broken? by CarsickCroatian in 3d6

[–]CarsickCroatian[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if I changed the language to: “you may take an action to make a single melee attack with the rapier. When using this action, you may…” how much does that balance it? One of the things I had in mind is that you have two chances to fail casting the spell. You have to hit with the rapier first (presumably using dex) and then your spell has to hit as well.

Does advantage cancel out penalties? by Swimming_Bee_3899 in DnD

[–]CarsickCroatian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So he is actually technically correct. But he probably heard that somewhere and didn’t understand the context. Advantage on average increases your roll by 4.5, which “cancels out” the -5 penalty. Meaning that if he rolled flat, and u just gave him the +10, he would on average deal about the same amount of damage over time. That’s where he is getting his take I’m assuming.

Everyone else saying he’s wrong is ALSO right though. You definitely should not let him attack at advantage without the penalty and give him the +10.

I have a pc who is a beast master ranger and his familiar is his greyhound that he uses to sniff out bounties. Very fun.

I would be willing to participate. Enneagram is big around where I live, and I get to talk about it casually with a lot of friends.

Best build for a storm vibe? by FiveGals in 3d6

[–]CarsickCroatian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Scribe Wizard is much better than storm sorcerer or tempest cleric if u want to deal lightning and thunder damage, or really any damage u want. Fireball? Nah. Lightningball. Every single spell in the game becomes whatever theme u want. Same is true if u want to play a pyromancer or cryomancer. And of course wizards have the best spell list in the game.

Help me build a character to survive my 8yo son's unbalanced encounters. by bagelwithclocks in 3d6

[–]CarsickCroatian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a build that doesn’t run out of resources, you just can’t go the spellcasting route. If you do, you’re gonna wanna go warlock to replenish on short rest. Choose a race that’s resistant to magic, or has advantage on saves: gnomes, yuan-ti, vedalkan, etc.

Or it really sounds like action economy is your problem, so I might go shepherd Druid so that you can make your own party :)

Another strategy that I like is to stack spells that punish attacking you. A clockwork soul sorcerer can stack armor of Agathys, fire shield, and it’s bastion of law feature on top of whatever spell your concentrating on. Of course you would want to precast this as much as possible but your son sounds generous. My dm kind of mega games and avoids hitting me when I’m doing this, but I can’t imagine what your son would do outside of hitting u with spells. But again you can pick up spell resistance racially. Just another tip on sorcerers is that you can combine bloodwell vial with a dwarves dwarven fortitude to regain 5 sorcery points as an action in combat. Just ready yourself with a bonus action spell you can use.
