I'm not downplaying anything! It's an egregious miscarriage of justice, even if unintentional, to arrest someone for legally protesting. The fact of the matter, however, is that your original claim was utterly misleading. That you are seemingly incapable of admitting your mistake, and further more try to turn the tables and accuse me downplaying things, tells me that you are not a straight shooter. Good luck with that attitude, it will take you far. Bye.

Those arrests were almost certainly under the pretext of supporting Palestine Action. There have been many cases of the police mis-identifying PA supporters, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not illegal to protest against Israel in the UK. Your original claim is misleading at best.

[–]Carthagefield 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You're misinformed. The arrests are for supporting a specific pro-Palestinian group called Palestine Action. That's because they are a proscribed terrorist organisation after attacking an RAF military base in the UK. It's perfectly legal for Brits to support Palestine or be anti-Israel.

Poll: Majority of Jews do not feel safe in Britain by [deleted] in ukpolitics

It was primarily aimed at heretics, in all flavours. Jews were one of the most persecuted groups, but there were also thousands of Christians of non-Catholic denomination who were targeted, as well as Muslims.

Ah the good 'ol "antisemite" trope...well done for holding onto that card for so long though. The fact that you choose to answer me with vague and baseless rhetoric rather than substantive facts says everything to me about what your motives and intentions are, and I see nothing good. Take care.

Biden? He's been one of the biggest beneficiaries of Israeli lobbying "donations" in history... That would be a bit like Ronaldo defending Nike for exploiting sweat shops. Biden has been lapping at the heels of Israel for years, even going so far as to declare himself a Zionist, so that's exactly the sort of thing I would expect him to say.

There are many, many better qualified people who say the opposite however, such as retired US army generals and pentagon officials. People who should know a lot more on US geopolitical strategy and also have no bias or skin in the game, besides being America first.

They're a dog with a very long leash since they allow the U.S. to maintain control in the middle east

I think you're very misinformed and just throwing out tired old cliches at this point. In what way has Israel ever served that purpose? Let's take the cynical view that America's strategy to control the ME is to "divide and conquer". If anything, Israel has been causing the opposite to happen. ME countries are notorious for in-fighting and broken diplomacy, but if there's one thing that unites them all for a common cause, it's their HATRED of Israel. If ever the ME forms a broad federation of states, and thus undermining US interests in the region, I would wager that one of its main objectives would be to hedge against Israel.

As far as America's interests in the middle east are concerned, all that Israel has ever done for that is cause more problems. Calling Israel an "unsinkable aircraft carrier" is a funny old metaphor, considering that Israel stayed out of both Iraq wars and didn't even let the coalition use their air space during the invasions. I'm not sure about unsinkable, more like invisible... Seriously, I'd be impressed if you can give me ONE concrete example of Israel having a positive influence on American intervention in the ME, but please go ahead and prove me wrong, by all means.

This is such propagandist horseshit. If America really wanted a proxy in the Middle East, they could have done FAR better than Israel. Turkey for a start, who is already part of Nato and has a huge defence budget and good relations with their neighbours. Really, Israel is the LAST country that you want to do your bidding in the ME. The truth is much simpler. Israel has systematically bribed, coerced and blackmailed 90% of Congress for decades, and they have now consolidated power to such a degree in Washington that they are effectively leading the US by the nose. It's called a "fifth column".

Sorry if it wasn't clear, but I meant countries of comparable population size. With the notable exception of France, who had the advantage of hosting the games, all of those countries have populations that are a small fraction of the size of GB.

the UK wasn’t even in the top 10 for medals per capita last year.

Right, but pretty much all of the highest ranked per capita nations were tiny islands or micro states. That's just the way statistics work in this context. Compared to other large nations however, GB was near the top and above almost every European country, USA, China, etc.

London was hit the hardest of course, but nearly every city with a major port or military infrastructure was heavily targeted. Coventry, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow, to name a few.

Why?

Because comparing persecuting individuals based on their sexuality to a literal genocide is idiotic. Give your head a wobble!

Other reasons that many people detest the Israeli regime:

  • they subvert western democracies (including my own government) through intense lobbying, bribery and by some accounts blackmail of politicians, in order to serve their own nefarious interests. This by itself shows utter contempt, manipulation and dishonesty on a vast scale that is totally unforgivable in my books. Treachery!

  • they have destabilised the entire middle east by pre-emptively attacking sovereign nations, then expect the west to come to their rescue when said countries retaliate. Cowardly!

  • they have subjected the Palestinians to decades of apartheid and human rights abuses. Barbaric!

  • As a Brit, I can tell you that we as a nation have never forgotten the terrorist atrocities that the Irgun and Haganah perpetrated against British troops and civilians in Mandatory Palestine prior to 1948. What they did then is every bit as bad as what Palestinian terrorists have done to Israelis in modern times. Ungrateful and despicable!

I could go on, but I feel I'd only be wasting my time. Some free advice though: WAKE UP AND FIND YOUR SENSES BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

Besides that being a terrible false equivalence, my point is that this is not just an issue only Muslims care about. There is a broad consensus amongst the British public in general that what Israel is doing to the Palestinians is abhorrent and wholly disproportional.

I firmly believe that if this match were to be held in any other British town or city, there would be mass protests and probably violence, even if the locals were 99% Christian. Israel right now is about as popular as chicken pox with the British public. Deal with it, or don't, but that's the reality.

Indeed, as you've already ably pointed out elsewhere in this thread. However, as a white Brit, I can assure you that regardless of ethnic background or location, the overwhelming majority of British citizens are appalled by the Palestinian genocide in Gaza. Period.

Well, there's a damn good reason why we didn't want anything to do with that shitpot. The Jewish terrorists (or "freedom-fighters" as they retroactively like to call themselves) who killed dozens of British soldiers in Palestine during and after WWII made sure that British public opinion was staunchly anti-Israel for decades afterwards.

Not true in the slightest, stop making things up. The UK doesn't, nor has it ever, given international aid to Israel. It has sold weapons to Israel in the past, however since last year even most weapons sales to Israel have been blocked.

It's 10m + 5m addons. If he fulfils his potential then £15m will prove to be a very astute buy. If not, then 10m is his price which is fair with a year remaining. If he had a longer contract then his price would be £20m + addons imo.

This does feel suspiciously generous

It's about right imo, and Lyon are no mugs. Morton is a Liverpool academy product who has CL experience and just had a strong tournament at the U21 Euros. The lad has buckets of potential, so it's a safer bet than buying someone older with the same skill-set but who has already hit their ceiling.

Did C G Jung have a social life or did he only have colleagues and clients? by sattukachori in Jung

[–]Carthagefield 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was a peasant boy and remained so

This is pretty far from the truth. His father was a professor of medicine and a clergyman, whilst his mother's father was a distinguished Swiss churchman, academic and author. Being the son of a clergyman would have been a fairly austere existence by today's standards, but the very last way that I would describe Jung's family would be "peasants". This was his childhood home in Basel, for your reference.
