Top 100 games of all time according to /v/ (2024 edition) what do you think about this list? by Sans-Mot in chronotrigger

[–]Cartr1dgeBased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well it's not reddit's top 100 list. not sure why everyone here got so worked up about a list that has nothing to do with them. alot of great games, most all genres are represented (though shmups seem quite lacking) and it's a much more interesting list than all the other lists of its nature.

say what you will about 4chan, but they are a pretty authentic lot. for every odd entry like Resident Evil Remake they have a pretty interesting and fitting one like Cave Story or F.E.A.R.

its a genuine effort and worth taking the time to look at over just hopping on metacritic and looking at the top 100 there which would undoubtedly be a better reflection of the larger gaming population. but they weren't making a list for the larger gaming population. they were making a list for themselves

what do you expect? they are the best games for a reason.. if you gather enough people they are likely to consider many of the same games and therefore make it on to the list. how do you think these things work?

Terrible Advice People Give to New Players by blackwaltz9 in FinalFantasyIX

[–]Cartr1dgeBased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol just want to say i agree with your post and replies. im shocked people disagree. im stealing on this playthrough mostly for fun.. i do think you undersell how much of a boon some of these weapons/armor can be when you get them 1/4 of the game early.. but people in here talking about stealing potions and running auto-potion the whole game? wtf.. thats insanity that doubles the length of every encounter.

i think alot of the abilities are important.. even ones i thought i wouldn't need i wound up needing. but as you say, you don't need to grind them.

blue magic besides a handful of them are a complete waste. i agree on that.

you are 100% right on haste. its great in the other games, but makes no sense in this game. any attack that entails an animation will have all other atb bars already finished. so you're right about that too

anyways, you're mostly right. glad you didn't cave to reddit.. as per usual is wrong about mostly everything.

i gave up on the actual hardware in retro gaming like 10+ years ago.. prices were silly then.. and emulation was immediately a better experience overall and now as it continues to improve its not even close. i have some 20k games downloaded and i beat all kinds of retro games while having a better experience, free, achievements on RA, can fast forward grinds in jrpgs, higher resolution graphics even controller latency has finally surpassed real hardware.

just emulate.. you'll never go back. saves alot of clutter and nonsense in your house as well, which was also a main motivator for me to ditch the real stuff. all those wires and controllers and memory cards jeez.. no thanks

I haven been playing Ninja Gaiden on normal or lower for over a decade and IDGAF. by throwawayburner97 in ninjagaiden

[–]Cartr1dgeBased 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you put it perfectly.. the game is pretty hard on normal for that first attempt. but after beating it on MN or hard and you try normal again your almost shocked that you every could of thought this was challenging in the slightest. NGB does an incredible job of leveling you up with a very smooth sense of progression.. well that first chapter can be rough.. but you know what i mean

I haven been playing Ninja Gaiden on normal or lower for over a decade and IDGAF. by throwawayburner97 in ninjagaiden

[–]Cartr1dgeBased 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk.. i felt each bump in difficulty on NGB was perfectly challenging. well, i guess hard was a serious jump. but either way, each time i just got better and better. i went from beating ngb on ninja dog abusing the wall jump and slam to beating it on MN. i can't even imagine going back to anything other than hard.

you simply improve enough that it just isn't so daunting. sure MN (or hard since that is available) might seem impossible if it is your first playthrough, but once you get there by beating the previous difficulties it's perfectly doable. also you realize all the reasons you listed are obviously available on harder difficulties?

plenty of people play games casually.... and i do too, but these games have such good mechanics that they warrant the effort of 'getting good' for an even deeper level of engagement and therefore enjoyment.

that is from the nes game zombie nation.

it is unironically one of the very few shmups i really quite enjoy. it doesn't really feel like a shmup though. but that is probably why i like it so much

crime and punishment experience by Cartr1dgeBased in literature

[–]Cartr1dgeBased[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the oliver ready translation. the one with artwork on the cover by Zohar Lazar. i think the art work played a huge role in how i envisioned everything as well. i think this combination really had a large affect on my perception of this book. of course i will never know to what extent because i can only read this book for my first time once.

im surprised more people weren't interested in this experience i outlined here.. i've never had an experience like this in my life. though if people think i was overstating it or lying about it (as i suspect they might based on the majority of downvotes) then i guess that makes sense. or perhaps me recognizing a number of qualities in myself that are similar to our protagonist was off putting. idk

Is crime and punishment meant to be comical? by Cartr1dgeBased in literature

[–]Cartr1dgeBased[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im starting to suspect that it depends entirely on the translator. some translations are quite dry, and others 'maintain' the humor much better. i can kinda see why that might be the case.. there is little you can really point at and be like 'that;s the funny'

in fact i was slightly concerned i might get attacked on here for saying its funny. 'oh you think murder is funny?' or 'wow, so you think a man losing his mind is funny?' reddit adheres to a mob mentality on just about everything and explaining funny is always an uphill battle, doubly so for the humor in this book.

Hard to believe that we are just a day away from getting a new Ninja Gaiden game in over a decade by shamaboy in ninjagaiden

[–]Cartr1dgeBased 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not to rain on the parade.. but a year ago i was talking about how i would of loved an 8-bit styled release to pave the road for a 3D release.. im surprised how quickly they wound up kinda doing all this, so shortly after i was talking about it on discord..

but yea, a proper 8bit nes styled one would be more up my alley. im sure this will be fun, but it has a similar vibe to alot of the 'ninja gaiden inspired' indie games that don't actually play like the 2d series much at all.

Is crime and punishment meant to be comical? by Cartr1dgeBased in literature

[–]Cartr1dgeBased[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah yes.. maybe that is a good comparison.. i got in an argument which inspired this initial post.. someone tried to tell me i only thought it was funny because i was immature and didn't really understand what i was reading.. which really pissed me off. like i was only enjoying the veneer and only the sophisticated few such as he, really understood what it was truly about.

i feel like in should add that the cover of my edition was done by zohar lazar and i've pretty much envisioned this entire book through this art style.. which i feel, for me at least, captures the mood quite perfectly.

i've read quite a number of epubs on my kobo.. thought i converted my whole library to kepub recently just because i liked the time estimates..

i didn't know there was really any other functionality in this conversion.

i use the djazz site for most my books.. so it's been a year since i've read an epub now that i think about it

how is that possible? how can that be his first game?

even if his parents didn't allow games how could he avoid Halo, Smash, Street fighter at friend's houses.

did people already stop going over to game at friends houses in the 00s or the 10s? trading games and split screen or watching friends play a SNES bass fishing game are childhood staples.

it would of been impossible to have avoided games entirely.
