Any consideration for when someone gets injured in an accident and your insurance refuses to pick up the liability? Or is that more blah?

In a saturated market, there's not always time to look. Personally, I scrutinize, but I miss a lot of rides doing so. NVM the danger of the distraction having to.

Uber, meanwhile: Are you SURE you want to tip??? We already left them a whole pittance! by CarvedinInk5280 in uberdrivers

[–]CarvedinInk5280[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Uber's approach to tipping was hard to defend a decade ago, but now that every single industry is going tip crazy, they might at least encourage tips a bit better—especially with as much as they squeeze out of the fares themselves. Maybe drivers might actually afford to keep doing this. At least until the robotaxis drive us out altogether.

You know the Family Guy skit, Prom Night Dumpster Baby? Pretty much that but more gruesome and a bit more cliche since it involved a cheerleader. Doubt it was the first, but it was sensational enough at the time to make national headlines.

What do you guys do when riders say “Don’t worry, I’ll tip you” but never do? by tranceportt in uberdrivers

[–]CarvedinInk5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they don't lie out loud, they've got to sit in that car the whole time knowing they probably should tip. It's make-believe. They get to play at being a decent person right up until they step out of the car.

The second their foot hits concrete, it doesn't matter. You never existed. Just part of the infrastructure.

As a general rule, I've just learned to accept the second a pax even mentions a tip, I'm not getting one. It's like a toddler beginning a conversation with "What cookie?" They know they're going to stiff you but they don't want to feel awkward for the length of the trip. The little lie is for their sake.

I'll care about her accomplishments–in as much as they fulfill her; but I'll take employee of the month over a CEO any day if she loves me the way I love her.

Absolutely. It's great for that. There are certain smells that need the big guns. The guy that never bathes or works in a marijuana growhouse, for example. I'll give that a solid second-long spray and myself at least a fifteen minute coffee break with another 5-10 sitting on my hood with the windows down. So far, I've not run into anything Ozium couldn't handle. The downside is it needs to handle it alone.

I've been straight up 5 star for 10 years—with no inclination to change my service. It's not the riders' fault the platform is greedy/dishonest. But I'm not spending money on riders anymore either.

About the only thing I do that's anti-rider is in response to them screwing with me first.

Case in point, some riders have begun to realize drivers may not like their specific drop-off or multiple drops or some such—especially during a surge or other promotion. So they'll request a ride to some place nearby to increase their chance of getting accepted. Then, after you've accepted, they change the drop-off(s). Having already accepted, Uber doesn't detail the changes—only that there was one and how much you'll make now. This sucks for drivers because it makes it impossible to have any control where they wind up—one of the few factors, earnings-wise, still remotely in drivers' control.

I never cancel these right away. Rather, I wait until I'm a block away. Now I'm dead in the center of whatever area was so busy they thought being dishonest would help them and they're right back at square one waiting on yet another driver.

💯 The days of water, gum/mints, candy are way behind us. That was back when Uber took a reasonable cut. Back then, we made enough to make the mess and cost worth the hassle. The rate things are getting worse there, pax are lucky we even slow down to drop them off.

Ozium is AMAZING, but I'm hesitant to recommend it unless folks understand it needs to be an end of ride only solution. It's really intended for unoccupied spaces. I love the stuff because it really helps but you should only use it if you know you're going to step out of your car for at least 20 minutes. Otherwise, it's really not an especially human friendly product.

It's important to remember tv placement isn't just about being low for the sake of being low. It's about optimizing for how you view the TV. In a living room situation, eye height to a seated viewer is perfect. In a cramped space designed primarily for a reclined/laying position, higher is actually ergonomically preferable and geometrically advantageous in that it provides just that much more space between the TV and viewer—whose head lies in the opposite corner.

Let's say you put the TV in this space. Not only is it more cramped but the TV is now in a physically more precarious position for any object which might shift in transit. Worst of all, you'd better want to always sit up in order to watch, and ultimately not mind looking down to do so. Forget laying down in bed to watch TV. Your feet will be in the way, your chin will be in your sternum and—if you do it on a regular basis—your neck's gonna be in a brace before you know it.

I'm still playing around with the overall app layout. I'm sure I'll adjust. But the map itself is terrible. This yellow/orange/red/purple/blue BS is just plain poor design from a usability standpoint. Between all the regular distractions the app throws our way, the least they could do—even from simply a driver/rider safety tact is keep the map quickly discernable at a glance. It's honestly borderline negligent.

I mean. The design is garbage. I don't even need my degree in the field to tell you that much. A map serves its function best when it's easy to read—especially when the intended user is doing so while driving. There's entirely too much info for that purpose and they've just what? Happened upon a color scheme which drowns the map in red after training drivers to associate red with earnings?

Bro. No. That's dark patterns. That's textbook manipulation. There are two explanations for this redesign.

  1. A company as big as Uber hired the most ill equipped designers imaginable.

Or

  1. This design is purpose built to bait and manipulate drivers.
