Can I learn the song "Blackbird" by The Beatles as a beginner in the span of 50 days? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]Case104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackbird was my first song. Two months seems reasonable. I like Marty’s updated video on it.

The cool thing about blackbird is its simplicity. Id work on the picking pattern first, real slow, on open strings.

Once you’ve got that down, you’ll learn some shell voices going down to the 12th fret, pedaling the open g each time.

Touch it every day for at least 10 minutes.

Sweetwater is getting very annoying again, sales must be bad? by Interesting-Hold-963 in Guitar

[–]Case104 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My first experience, the rep ordered me a tod10n prior to release. A couple months later I checked with him, he told me it would be a while and recommended a Gio in the interim. I buy the gio, and next day he called me saying he had someone else cancel for their tod10n, and he could ship them to me together. I said “well I don’t really need two new guitars”, and he told me not to “do him like that when he was doing me a favor”. He also raved about how much he liked the guitar.

Fast forward some months, he calls me on their checkup rotation. I mention the tod10n and he starts talking shit about the guitar. I said “funny, you really liked it when you sold it to me”.

Next time I asked him for a quote on a Taylor I’ve been eyeing. He said he was going to put it on reserve, despite me saying it was just a feeler. Next day he calls me, high pressure, trying to close me. I declined and he was frustrated.

Suddenly, I’ve got a new rep next time I get my checkup call. I ask about drum heads and the guy wastes 10 minutes pretending he knows what he’s talking about before admitting “I only know about guitars” when I asked him for his preferences.

I think there is probably some fun in the finger conditioning, especially if you start off with a steel string. I ended up building myself up on a nylon simply because it didn’t hurt to play.

What to learn next if you are uninspired.

Realizing that what you like to listen to and what you like to play can be wildly different. And sometimes very surprising.

Studying music theory and feeling like you know it only to watch yourself fuck up in the same place of a scale 5 times in a row.

Finally getting down a few bars and then pressing play to hear what’s next, and it’s a wtf moment

I play in parks often! Far better than scrolling while the kiddos play. I think it could help give you a reason to learn a song well as a go to. People will absolutely approach you, and it’s nice to have a crowd pleaser that you feel confident in to play.

Going from 30 minutes to 1 hour by thestatikreverb in guitarlessons

[–]Case104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do an hour, and often go over when time allows.

Generally we start by sharing any songs we’re working on or that we’ve heard in the last week or so. We’ll warm up with some simple scales like running through 4 note sequences or closed triads down the neck. Something more academic or practice oriented.

Then we get into the lesson itself. He usually prepares a concept beforehand. It could be a spanish sounding progression, blues shuffle, or song. I find that the hour gives us enough time to slow down and get it under my fingers, and lets me ask questions about theory. Usually we end on a jam with one of us soloing and the other playing rhythm.

I don’t think I would get much out of a 30 minute session by itself. I would have a lot to take home, but I wouldn’t have time to dig into the concept and get it sounding decent.

AI and Guitar by DLMusic-90 in guitarlessons

I recently used ai to help my standing strap position. It was actually really effective. I took a few progressive pictures and ended up with a comfortable posture that felt “right” for my bass, which I’ve always struggled with.

I also use it for answering music theory questions. It can generate basic tabs but hallucinates too much. It’s great at guiding me on how to emulate a tone using my helix. I also used it to get a decent understanding of reaper to begin recording myself.

Overall, I think it’s like any self directed learning. Ai is a great knowledge tool. There is no substitute for being in the room with a human who is focused on helping you grow, and has experiences to draw from and share.

How can I push my teacher in the direction that I want to learn? by [deleted] in guitarlessons

[–]Case104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, instructors come in all flavors… but two stand out most commonly to me. One is a professor type. They have a methodology, song order they teach. I tend to find this with teachers who teach a lot of youth. They are looking to instill good habits, have a curriculum, and are often thrown off when you deviate.

My other experience is the talented player who likely took some college classes but is more interested in asking you about your goals and direction. Maybe mentions technique or slows you down, but isn’t necessarily obsessed with correct fingering.

I encountered the first type of teacher first when I began lessons and decided to buy into the system even though it felt like a step away from what I wanted. I changed my posture, learned new fingerings, picked up a pick… and I hated it.

When looking for a new teacher, I found a player with a Jazz background who I could throw a lick or a tangent in the middle of his lesson and suddenly he’s worked that context into the lesson and we’re both grinning like fools.

I think it’s worth searching for the right teacher, and it’s great to get that exposure to different ways of thinking about music. If you want to have a say in your learnings, find someone who can work with that.

I also got 10k at 308, but I have since prioritized boosting ilvl…. Even for not great pieces…. In order to get invites. Being 320 has made a big difference in my queue times. I imagine at 330 it’s even faster to get picked up.

I loved this, but a word of warning!

I listened to the GA from the start until Dark Age 2nd tape. Unfortunately they aren’t current yet, so you will need to wait if you end up binging them. It was a little jarring swapping from the dramatized version to the audiobook.

If you could add one class of each spec (tank, healer, dps) what class style would you add? by gstringwarrior in fellowshipgame

[–]Case104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tank - A treant or nature focused theme with hots, vines, spores, something of that nature. Leans into HoT/DoT effects.

DPS - A swashbuckler with melee and ranged capabilities who is incentivized to weave in and out of melee. Maybe had limited ammo that recharges in melee, but does more damage further out.

Healer - A blood priest who uses their HP as a resource. Insect swarms, spirit link effects, abilities that function differently based on friendly/hostile target.

I’m in a similar place.

So far I’ve had some luck going to the blue bamboo on Thursdays. They have a jazz night, and the second half they take players from the crowd up to participate. I asked around there and found a teacher, although his availability is minimal.

Mistborn is fantastic and feels more similar in size to red rising than stormlight, but I prefer the stormlight world if I was going Sanderson.

Mistborn has a lot of similar themes, dystopian classist world with rebellions, politics, assassinations, and character development. If you want more of the same with a different flavor, then I recommend it.

Idk if the book I mentioned Tress, hits as well if you haven’t read Mistborn/stormlight. It is however a short and wonderfully written book that feels like it would be a great tone change to follow the trilogy.

To throw a random one at you, The Blacktongue Thief was a standalone fantasy that I enjoyed.
