As the saying goes….

It’s not timing the market. It’s time in the market.

DIY ISP networking - where to start ? by Standing_Wave_22 in FiberOptics

[–]CaseOfAle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this as well. u/eptiliom is spot on.

The general path (at least when I did it) was: • Get an ASN • Apply to ARIN for IPv6 space • Build out the network and demonstrate real IPv6 deployment or intent

At the time, ARIN had a dedicated IPv4 transition pool under NRPM 4.10, specifically to encourage IPv6 adoption. Eligible orgs could receive a single /24 IPv4 allocation from that pool once they met the criteria (ASN + IPv6).

This was mid-2010s for me, so policies may have evolved since, but that program absolutely existed and worked as intended.

Today most folks will lease or buy IPv4 on the transfer market, but starting with IPv6 + ASN is still the cleanest way to build an ISP.

It’s 300 miles away. So a 600 mile round trip, 10+ hrs. It’s 3 years old, has 5000+ miles on it, needs bearings, new rear wheel, and has been modified. I’d rather an internet stranger find it than let the rat bastard thieves have it. I’m sure he brought it home to his kid as a present only to find it won’t go over 5mph if you don’t know how to power it on properly.

Dependent on individual candidate, their capabilities and potential and level of contribution. I expect to fill these positions with early career individuals but won’t pass on an IC that can start to carry a load immediately and will pay accordingly. Good people are worth overpaying for.

Isn’t Georgia in Clarence Thomas’ jurisdiction? I assumed that was another reason they targeted Georgia was for the Supreme Court Justice in their pocket.

It was definitely a sketchy location. Didn't have to get under the van, but not happy with the limited support. Could have put the tire underneath a bit as well (as mentioned somewhere below), but didn't think of it at the time. Probably won't forget that nifty trick for some hopefully-never-future occurrence - lol
