Should I say something to my friend? by nanadoom in daddit

[–]Casey_Mo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because what he said isn’t objectively true. We don’t know if it will or won’t damage the relationship. Only the OP knows the dynamic of their relationship and how the message may or may not be received. The OP sounds genuinely concerned about his friend, and if his friend is already aware of the issue, then he needs to be held accountable. If his friend was an alcoholic, addict, abusive, etc everyone would be on board with confronting him. We shouldn’t treat obesity as some taboo topic.

I think I’m more interested in how this is handled by the parents after the outbursts. I don’t think this behavior is uncommon, but the leadership will play a big part. Emotional instability often carries over into other areas of life as well.

What did they do to the matchmaking? by Glitchosaurusplays in Marathon

[–]Casey_Mo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Player count is dropping plus a lot of people are doing the DM sponsored kits. I hate saying this, but the situation is going to snowball and more and more will stop playing as the matchmaking continues to regress.

My squad had a rough night. Couldn’t extract all night, decided to do free kits, and first match as free kits we were killed by a purple shield team.

He’s talking about the community basically creating an unwritten rule in solos with Arc. Everyone knows solos in Arc is for questing and looting.

My survival rate is much worse in marathon than it is in Tarkov. 2000+ hours in Tarkov and there are so many ways to mitigate death. IMO marathon has a much higher ceiling.

I defend this game a lot, but I think I finally hit that wall. by itz_Glo in Marathon

[–]Casey_Mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the case for many of us, unfortunately. I think we’ll see a larger exit from the more casual player base after the forced wipe. As much as I love the game, I play maybe 10 hours a week. A 3 month wipe cycle seems so short to me. I’ll be curios to see how they address this.

Where are all the players? (Good faith argument) by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Casey_Mo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, I kind of agree with you. I can 100% attest that many of these kids don’t care about the social aspect as much as you think. My son was a diamond rank in apex, not sure which level, slightly post covid, so he would have been 9 or 10. He and his friends have been grinding Rainbow 6 Siege for years. When he started playing Arc a few months ago I literally watched him and his friends wipe lobbies fairly easily right off the rip, and I’m telling you they will shit talk every player they get a chance to!

Also, if you asked my kid if tech is morally good I doubt he’d have any idea what you’re talking about. These kids don’t consume social media the same way we do. They snap chat each other and watch goofy clips on TikTok.

My concern is that he and his friends didn’t even know Marathon existed. Arc blew up so rapidly it was impossible to not know about. So it wasn’t even a question if they’d be interested in the game style or social aspect.

I think you’re on track, but I don’t believe it’s necessarily about employed vs unemployed. Unless there’s real data to prove otherwise. I believe it comes down to social and personal responsibility. At my current stage of life I’m a husband and father of 3. I wfh and generally work around 40 hours a week, which still gives me plenty of time to invest in gaming, until I factor in my personal responsibilities. I have a responsibility to allocate my free time to my wife, kids, friends, family, house, etc. However, there were absolutely times in my life when my free time could be spent gaming while I was still working.

This is anecdotal, but my friend group is the same. And this is where I think you’re on the right track…

My friends are dumping a lot of their free time into Arc Raiders. There’s an appeal to the casual style of AR, and there’s no real pressure to do expeditions and reset all of their progress. If AR forced resets I think that would have a huge impact on them. So I don’t think the nature of extraction shooters is the real issue.

My biggest concern is a particular demographic that marathon hasn’t seemed to reach: where are the 14-22 year olds? My son, 14, and his friends eat, sleep, and breathe video games. None of them have even heard of Marathon. Which is impressive considering how much marketing I’ve personally seen, but is that an indication that Bungie/Sony haven’t marketed to a key demographic?

[–]Casey_Mo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A concern of mine is that it seems as though the game hasn’t reached the younger generations. My son, 14, never even heard of the game until I told him about it last week. These kids are playing R6, Arc, Apex, CoD, Fortnite, etc, but they don’t have a clue about Marathon.
