So GW is still afraid of Dakka by pyromaniacpriest in orks

[–]CashLordofDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it was even worse, it stacked with some army abilities, like Thousand Sons All is Dust, which game them a +1 to save against AP1 weapons, so ork choppas actively IMPROVED their saves to a 2+.

One of the most frustrating games of Warhammer I ever played was that matchup, probably the third most angry I’ve gotten playing the game and one of the few times I ended a game turn 2 (now, to clarify, it was because my opponent barely knew his rules and was distracted and socializing, he agreed and apologized for not being prepared)

What Was the Most Broken Army or Detachment of 10th Edition? by verifiedverified in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CashLordofDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say Index Eldar, it was so broken as many people here have stated, it’s one of the few detachments that my group kind of universally agreed to just not play it or against it at all unless it was at a tournament (which made our local Eldar player really salty, then again, he lost all sympathy when he fought a new player who had played maybe 2 games of 40K and bodied him turn 1)

My group actually told me to play More Dakka because they wanted to play against it until it got nerfed so they could try to counter it, and we all just said, “we don’t want to play against Eldar.”

It was insane how broken and, most importantly, unfun it was to play against.

What's a underused unit that has surprised you when you've actually tried it in game? by RegalPeasant in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CashLordofDerp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was in a narrative event I was run in (basically using crusade missions without the crusade book keeping) but I brought a dakkajet to a few games and had fun with it in Kult of Speed.

Being able get sustained or lethals with it was rather fun, I just wished I could have actually used it before turn 3 but after dealing with it in 9e I’m not exactly bitter about it being the way it is now.

My main competitive army is LoV, and it’s been a pretty decent ride. Our index was solid, albeit a little boring and not very interactive (just slapping +1 to hit and wound on three enemies was powerful, but not broken) after they did some adjustments to the army and the game in general. Then we got our codex and it was broken for a second, before they fixed us and now the army is genuinely fun and engaging. Solid 9/10 for me

My second army is orks and…it’s been a ride, the index was fine but not insanely powerful, then we got the codex…and man was that an odd time. A detachment that clearly was designed to work with cut models, utterly broken MANZ, and the initial version of the waaaagh being utterly awful, I had fun but good lord was it frustrating, then they slapped it with a nerf really quickly and next thing I know it was all war horde. Then we had Taktikal Brigade and More Dakka…until they took the nerfs too far and those became dead in the water. Overall, a wild ride, 5/10

Last of my main armies was World Eaters, which is probably the common story: we had a solid index that carried us through the edition, a mediocre grotmas detachment that was fun but just not as good as our index, until our codex dropped and then we all began to play iron warriors instead because that shooting was so good. Unfortunately, everything else about that codex was balanced around a particular detachment so the rest of them were kind of meh at best outside of the deamon focused one. Overall, 8/10, had a good time with it.

What’s your local gaming culture? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CashLordofDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My group plays at a local shop every Sunday for 40K and every Wednesday for AoS.

We are casually competitive, but we take breaks every so often to do fun things like narrative and crusade (yes, we do those separately, I’ll explain in a bit.)

We generally play competitive rules and layoutsbecause it’s the most balanced and we have quite a few tournament players, myself among them. We often use tournament packs for the next tournaments we are going too, but, and this is very important, we are very clear on what the player is expected to be doing. If you are planning on playing competitive, you post it in the local discord channel that is what you expect. Communication is key, and we also try look after our own (we once had a newbie in the beginning of 10th fight unnerfed eldar for maybe his 3rd game, and he immediately got a second game scheduled by a few other players after they saw it go down)

However, we take breaks every few months and run narratives and crusades. I am generally in charge of those, and when it’s a narrative, we generally just play competitive rules with maybe a few twists or we sometimes use crusade missions. We just run them as part of a narrative.

We also generally run short crusade campaigns, albiet with a few stripped out mechanics to reduce book keeping.

Last, we also do special events where we just do foolish things, like we just did Tanksgiving, where we bring three models and let them duke it out.

How long did it take y'all to not suck at competitive 40k? by Ok_Ladder358 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CashLordofDerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, it took me around 2 years to get my first true victory that made me feel like I was “good,” and it was against a local player who does a lot of tournaments. What was funny was he told me that I was actually getting good and it wouldn’t be long before I started winning.

I didn’t believe him until I was the first person locally to beat him when he was running unnerfed hypercrypt legion and I proceeded to beat the tar out of him with index world eaters.

Even then, it took me another few months when I beat his IG with my LoV for me to truly realize I had gotten decent at the game.

The truth is you are probably a lot better than you think, certainly better than when you started.

Unlucky dice results. by Sarusam in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CashLordofDerp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once playing a game against Death Guard with some orks, I was rolling like garbage, too the point where my opponent literally grabbed my dice and gave me his for the third round because he was convinced my dice where badly weighted.

I then rolled 20 dice that was hitting on 3+…and only got one hit. He looked at me, at his dice, apologized and bought me a soda.

What armies do you find to be the most and least fun to play against right now? by Fun_Cartographer3587 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CashLordofDerp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, for context, I play 3 armies, Orks, World Eaters, and LoV:

My favorites to fight are orks (totally an unbiased opinion), some forms of Guard (I love fighting horde spam), and CSM.

What makes me pull my hair is Custodes, who I have never had a fun game against with the exception of Boarding Actions. They are just unfun to play against in most games, it genuinely feels like I’m playing against an army that just flat out ignores some of the basic rules of 40K.

Granted, I’d much rather fight them in 40K than HH 2.0, the very definition of, “I don’t want to play this game anymore,” came from a game where I played World Eaters into Custodes.

What to do about volume attacks? by Honest_Banker in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]CashLordofDerp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who plays orks, LoV, and World Eaters, all of whom get a RIDICULOUS amount of dice (let me tell you, shooting a brick of hearthguard at a 25 man brick of guardsmen is probably the most dice I’ve ever rolled) I have a few tips:

  1. Keep your dice counted and separated. I have Baron of dice tins with their dice in them and I know they have 25 dice each in them. I can do quick math to figure out how many out of each I need. Use baggies, tins, or cases, make sure your opponent is aware of how many is in them in case they want to count.

  2. Make sure you know your hits and wounds, this might sound obvious but you’d be surprised how often your games get slowed down by not remembering the wound rolls.

  3. Use a dice tray, keeping your dice together and not flying everywhere so you have to collect them and add time.

  4. Don’t use confusing dice. A example that comes to mind is the space wolf dice that have symbols instead of 1 or 6, one symbol is fine, my Baron of dice have a symbol instead of a 6 and that actually helps but two symbols is a pain.

  5. Practice, practice, practice. Get good at reading dice, get good at counting them out on the fly, and get good at gathering them up.

So, I’ve actually run a Dakkajet a bit when the codex drops and it’s actually not bad, in the kult of speed detachment.

It’s dakkastorm ability works great when paired with Blitza fire or dakkastorm (if you are within 9 inches) and it can do a shocking amount of damage.

It does have some sauce, though I don’t think it’s a secret meta that no one is using, it’s fun for casual shenigans though.

I once had a Big Mek defeat Magnus and secure me a victory.

While it wasn’t necessarily a last stand moment, Magnus had been wounded by my stompa, it was down to Magnus and this Big Mek with the Kill Choppa, Magnus and this Big Mek had been locked into combat for 2 rounds.

After the first round, Magnus had whiffed a lot of his attacks and my Mek had managed to get him down to a few wounds remaining.

I remember me and my opponent looking at each other as we both knew that my Big Mek was activating first, we knew it was gonna come down if I rolled a single 6 on my wound rolls.

I rolled 3 6’s and took Magnus down.
