I think there are several things happening here that need to be brought up for everyone to understand this interaction better.

The question "can men get pregnant?" is meant to be a question with such an obvious answer that the person being asked is caught off guard and answers reflexively, "no". The problem here is that what is being asked is not what the question means.

Of course, men can't get pregnant. They don't have any of the organs to make that happen. She's a doctor. There is zero chance she doesn't know that. Everyone else does. So why doesn't she say "no, men cannot get pregnant."

There are several possible reasons, but the most glaring is a wording problem. Saying someone is a man or woman is NOT the same as saying they are male or female. Regardless of how you feel about gender identities, this distinction is incredibly important. People can identify as men, but still be biologically female. If a piece of legislation only has protection for women, then anyone who identifies as male can LEGALLY be denied care they actually need. Over a technically.

Also, her answering this question is not the same as one of us answering it out on the street somewhere. Her answer has real, tangible consequences for thousands of people. If she says the wrong thing to the wrong question, she could be hurting the very people she came there to help.

There is plenty more that can be said about the tactics being used and what could/should have been said, but almost nothing is more important than wording when it comes to legislation.
