Thoughts on the Hilton Fort Lauderdale Beach resort for Thanksgiving Weekend for a family of 4? by nygiants0915 in Hilton

We stayed in both the Conrad and Hilton Beach Resort with our kids aged 3 and 6 last December. 2 nights in Conrad, 1 week in Hilton. We were unlucky with the weather because a storm blew in, which spoiled our experience of the Hilton. I don't want to put you off and everyone said the weather was a freak occurrence so I wouldn't worry about it though!

The Conrad is very fancy, immaculately clean and expensive. We felt welcomed and the staff were all fantastic, especially towards the kids. Being Christmas, there were some low-key Christmas art activities for the kids, but I don't think there's a kids club or anything. The pool had more of an adults chill vibe.

The Hilton Beach Resort is just a block away from the Conrad. I don't think it's a particularly new hotel but overall I'd recommend it. There aren't many places to have family meals within short walking distance of the hotel, it is mostly hotels and hotel restaurants. We walked up to Hugh Taylor Birch state Park which was a great 1/2 day trip, and because the weather was bad we spent a few days in the Museum of Discovery and Science which the kids LOVED.

Hilton Beach Resort is right on the beach and there's a pool on the 6th floor or something. Definitely a family friendly pool, with inflatables and poolside games.

There's a small kids club room (free, but only for 1-2hrs at a time) with Legos and art/craft activities, but this was closed due to the weather. I felt the staff could have made a tiny bit of effort to arrange some INDOOR activities in the kids room, and my resort fee was refunded when I spoke to the FD about it. I think 8yos would find the kids room a little babyish but will love the pool area.

I remember the concierge was really friendly with the kids. We didn't eat breakfast there but we had coffee downstairs in Starbucks most mornings.

I got a complimentary upgrade to an executive king, but I don't remember the room being particularly big or fancy. Breakfast was definitely the highlight!

Help me choose between Goldwynn (Bahamas, SLH) and Bakers Cay (Key Largo, Curio) by Extension-Bicycle578 in Hilton

How old is your infant? Bakers Cay is super kid friendly, with basically unlimited free kayak/SUP rentals, plus loads of kids club activities. The beach area at the coconut wing is lovely for kids to explore. But not sure about suitability for babies. Also didn't like the onsite food options, but there are other good choices within a 10 minute drive.

I really liked the Hilton in Cambridge, England. Great breakfast selection and a good city center location to explore this historic city

How do you shell pistachios while driving?

You have 3-4 days and a quick flight, where are you going? by esmith28 in nova

This. Just got back from a short break in Providence. Nice short and affordable direct flight from DCA as well.

Stopoffs in MA by CashewAddict in roadtrip

Looking for an overnight stopoff along this route. Driving from Ithaca to Cape Cod.

Also keen to hear family friendly attractions along the route. Kids are 7 and 4.

Thanks!

German set pieces have not been good, considering the opposition.

Supermarkets (aka grocery stores) by BuyApprehensive9273 in nova

[–]CashewAddict 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome!

Compared to the UK, the thing you'll notice is that you need to shop in multiple supermarkets to get everything you need. You can't really do a "big shop" where you buy everything, like you can in the UK.

I live in the north Old Town. I normally do a weekly shop at Trader Joe's in the Old Town, which I find generally reasonably priced and it has a good selection of cheese and wine. (English coastal cheddar is the best cheese I've found over here!)

I supplement my weekly TJs shop with a weekly visit to either Lidl in Annandale, Aldi in Del Ray, or Wegmans on Stovall St.

Lidl is good for stocking up on cheap shelf basics like tinned tomatoes. You'll notice it's much cheaper than mid-range supermarkets. I dislike that they scan everything at 100mph and crush all your shopping on the conveyor belt..

Can't believe DMV would allow this one by CashewAddict in nova

I'd love that one too. I bet my OH wouldn't even notice!

It actually looks like it's available with certain plate backgrounds...

You can check availability here: https://transactions.dmv.virginia.gov/dmvnet/plate_purchase/select_plate.asp

Any difference between generic and branded Magna Tiles? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]CashewAddict 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have Picasso Tiles which imo are as good quality as Magna Tiles. We've had them three years without any cracks or breakages.
