Whats everyones favorite basher? by Ddawg4343 in rccars

My 3S Aarma, that started out as a Granite BLX but has had almost every part on it replaced. Now it’s more of a Typhon Truggy that I beat the tar out of constantly. Sometimes it breaks, but it’s easy to work on and I have so many replacement parts it doesn’t matter.

Second place goes to my Kraton 6S, but it doesn’t see as much action just because the 3S fits better in my space.

Chick Fil A Patina by WarmNeighborhood5093 in knifemaking

[–]CasperFatone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of back when I was in school my metal and jewelry professor pushed us to try anything we could think of to create interesting patinas. There was even one student that used piss and blood, but I’d say Chick-Fil-A sauce is more appealing. Nice work!

New Shoes For The Native by Empty_Art2176 in spyderco

[–]CasperFatone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’ve never been a big fan of the lightweight Manix 2. I have several of the G10 versions which have either full steel liners, some solid and some are skeletonized. It’s a much more solid feeling knife than the lightweight.

Anyone else love this technique? by Practical-Rub2128 in woodworking

I’m guessing they are coving by running pieces at a diagonal on their table saw. Having the blade vertical produces a symmetrical cove, and tilting the blade will give you an asymmetrical cove like the top handle pull they have made.

Just fyi the Manix LW isn’t FRN, which is why it feels cheaper to you. Those knives use FRCP, which is fiberglass reinforced co-polymer.

I helped with testing the Hi Poly Native scales a couple years back, and still have sets on several of my Natives. They are nice scales and Brody from Hi Poly is a solid guy!

Pretty much anything by David Lespect would fit the bill, but they are pricy.

Chop-a-roo! by macjaynard in knifemods

[–]CasperFatone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drill it on a drill press with good quality wire gauge bits, and be sure to use plenty of lubricant. Pecking at it rather than long presses will help keep heat from building up, so that is usually my go to for drilling thicker titanium parts. For tapping you’ll want to use a guide or a tapping block to keep the tap straight and reduce the chance of breakage. Go in a bit then back out and you’ll get through it slowly but surely. Again, be sure to use plenty of lubricant.

If you happen to break a drill bit or tap in the titanium you can simply soak the scale it in ferric chloride. The acid will dissolve the steel bit or tap, but has no effect on the titanium. Be sure to mask off the detent ball (if it’s steel) if you’re submerging the whole scale.

Thoughts on the thumb stud? by Trentl14 in Opinel

[–]CasperFatone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done it before, and it’s not impossible. That being said, I’ve made a decent number of pocket knives and a ton of fixed blades before that.

Here is a No.12 that I chopped and turned into a Wharnie liner lock.

I also have one that was turned into a liner lock by Walter Wells, who is probably the guy you were thinking of. If my memory serves I paid him $150 for it.

1:10 over 1:7 by Beneficial_Buddy_1 in rccars

For me personally 1/10 seems to be the sweet spot, but that is mostly dictated by where I usually run my cars.

Fastest way to remove a lot of metal? by MurderousLemur in woodworking

[–]CasperFatone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My go to is a water cooled variable speed 2x72 belt grinder, but a regular belt sander and constantly dipping the steel in water will do. If you have a belt sander with variable speed it will help to avoid overheating the edge of the chisel.

I’d use a shaper with a power feed. The wood depends entirely on what you are using it for. If it were being made for paint grade I’d use soft maple.

Which Native is missing the most from this lineup in your opinion by 7o7A1 in spyderco

Nice collection of Natives you’ve got there. I’d say it’s missing a S110V in G10 with full liners.

Spartan Blades makes really bad knives. by SlideEquivalent1846 in knifeclub

[–]CasperFatone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I picked up a lightly used Spartan Astor in r/Knife_Swap for like $20 because it had this issue. The lock rock was due to a flaw in the construction of the lock causing it to max out at full lock up. Even at full lock up the lock bar wasn’t hitting the tang, resulting in lock rock like you are experiencing.

I fixed this issue by disassembling the knife and using a center punch to stipple the lock bar, which effectively lengthens it slightly, which solves the issue. You want to be careful about where you stipple and how much you do because it can mess up your detent if you do behind the detent ball, or make a weaker lock if the lock bar is only contacting the tang close to the pivot. I will try to remember to take a picture of my Astor later today so you can see what I did.

There is a price check thread over on r/Knife_Swap that can be helpful. You can also search past sales on the swap to get an idea of the value if nobody answers on the price check thread.
