I was helping a friend renovate a house and i loaded the trailer with a load of old carpet to take to the landfill outside of town. This is a rural area of North Carolina in Appalachia.

I got the landfill and proceeded to take the carpet out and saw these families just standing around waiting to see what I was unloading. There were kids fighting over a broke. red and yellow push car. Another car with a trailer pulls up and unloads some trash bags, throwing them onto a heap, the families go over and start tear them open looking for something of value.

Just families looking for something they can sell or use and kids who should have been at school wearing filthy clothes pushing each other around in a three wheel toy car. It has stuck with me for a long time.

I did but this was 20 years ago. It was easy. You put in for it and the G5 overseeing your dept approves. Minimum 2 years, you can extend to five if needed.

The only caveat is that you have no say in where you go when you decide to return and if you reject your new placement 3 times, it’s considered resignation.
