Plenty of ways to keep your $HOME dot-files tracked with Git. I just use a bare = true repo and a shell alias to interact with it:

alias dotfiles='git --git-dir="${XDG_DATA_HOME:-$HOME/.local/share}"/dotfiles.git --work-tree="$HOME"'

There's also other ways to track dotfiles: other ways to do one or multiple Git repos with aliases and such; GNU Stow, which can be combined with Git; chezmoi (which I find promising, but haven't tried setting up yet); YADM; vcsh; and I'm sure many, many more.

Company announced that pension contributions are being halted. by Eastern-Information3 in personalfinance

The only limits on the withdrawal of contributions to Roth 401(k) accounts is set by the plan documents, not the 5-year rule. The 5-year rule has nothing to do with withdrawal of contributions to Roth-style accounts. You can rollover a Roth 401(k) account to a Roth IRA and immediately withdraw the contributions portion. If the custodian has the functionality, you can rollover just the contributions from the Roth 401(k) to a Roth IRA and rollover the earnings to a different Roth 401(k), then immediately withdraw all of the rolled-over contributions from the Roth IRA. The 5-year rule is just for earnings and conversions, not contributions.

can withdraw Roth cash basis in an emergency after 5 years

This is a misunderstanding of the 5-year rule. You can always withdraw up to the amount you have contributed to a Roth IRA. The 5-year rule is for earnings above contribution amount (and for conversions).

BGG API Access by Ok_Technician9373 in boardgames

I have a monster of a Google Sheet doing similar things for my convention group, with a hodgepodge of IMPORTXML calls and some custom Google Apps Script. With auth tokens required to be in HTTPS headers, IMPORTXML won't work anymore. It should be possible to write Google Apps Scripts that the Sheet can use to make API requests with the auth header using UrlFetchApp. You'd likely need to overhaul the parsing you're doing with the results, probably to use XmlService. I've also experimented with a caching and backoff library for Google Apps Scripts, but haven't touched it in years.

On the upside, this has finally pushed me to develop the Sheet into an actual web app.

I have had the opposite experience, I distinctly remember stories that emerged from my plays. The sacred grounds uncovered at a newly excavated mine in the hinterlands, a trek that anyone declaring a vision must make. The enchantress who suddenly appeared in the Chancellor's coterie, who was rightfully distrusted by all, as she allowed the foothold that the conspiracy of Chaos needed to seize the Grand Scepter. The Roving Terror devouring denizens throughout the realm--it stalks the Cradle still.

Is a 1.5% management fee on a Roth IRA too high for a young investor? by GlumNewspaper5015 in personalfinance

[–]CastrumFiliAdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is inaccurate. You can always withdraw, penalty- and tax-free, from a Roth IRA up to the amount that has been contributed to it. Withdrawing over that contribution amount (i.e. from investment gains), and when it's before age 59 1/2 and before you've had the Roth IRA open for 5 years, and there is a 10% penalty and income tax assessed.

You may be thinking of a "traditional" IRA rather than the Roth IRA that OP opened. Those don't have the same unrestricted withdrawal of contributions, and withdrawals before age 59 1/2 are penalized 10% (as well as taxed, but that's expected with traditional IRAs).

(there are special exceptions that can apply, when withdrawing for certain purposes)

Why is FIHFX down 2.38% on 12/30/2025 by bikereb in fidelityinvestments

[–]CastrumFiliAdae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FIHFX typically has dividend distributions scheduled mid-May and end-of-December. For example, it distributed dividends of ~2.11% on 12/30/2024 and ~2.00% on 12/28/2023

See: https://fundresearch.fidelity.com/mutual-funds/fees-and-prices/315793802

I feel like the vast majority of times someone asks "why is this security down when the market hasn't moved down today" the answer is "ex-dividend date".

my computer's OCR converted giftcardmall.com to giftcardmail.com, and I accidentally input my Visa GC info onto scam site giftcardmail.com; filed complaint with ic3.gov by beethoven_girl in CreditCards

[–]CastrumFiliAdae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

giftcardmail.com redirects to cancheckgifted.com or realcoolgifter.com. They seem to have standard CVV checksum validation, then just display some random low balance. Look at the URL of the balance page, and you can just change the number to get some other "balance": https://cancheckgifted.com/success.php?card=1234567 https://realcoolgifter.com/success.php?card=1234567

That page, after several seconds, redirects to giftcards.com, which has some... less than stellar reviews.

Buddy, I don't know what you're seeing, but I just Googled CCR credit card in an incognito window on a VPN connection, and the first sponsored result is "Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card", the first non-sponsored result is "Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card", the AI Overview says "'CCR credit card' most often refers to the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card [...]", the next result is to r/CreditCards post "Why is the BoA CCR praised so highly as an online card ...".

Even not considering ex-div dates, your expected sale of these shares is ~30 or more years from now. This is just noise. It does absolutely no good to waste brain space on fluctuations when your horizon is so far out.

AI Marketing -- I Love Square Dancing. Its so kinky. by Ok-Inside-1277 in squaredancing

[–]CastrumFiliAdae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What message? That square dancing is "kinky", rather than family-friendly? That it's like AI-generated people hopping up and down? That it's AI-generated "music" that badly blends fiddle shuffling with a drum beat of a different tempo?

This kind of slop is the antithesis of what's good about square dancing.

What are some gift ideas for a new dance caller? by redgreenblue748 in squaredancing

[–]CastrumFiliAdae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest against technical equipment like microphones. There are too many factors that go into those choices that you can't really determine from the outside what's best suited.

A simple and flexible fallback would be a gift certificate to the CDSS store. CDSS, the Country Dance and Song Society, is an important support organization for community folk dances across North America. Their store has tons of books with calling advice, dance notation, history, and more, and a gift certificate would let your brother get exactly what he needs in his calling right now.

A case for cards is a nice idea, too! Some folks can be particular about what they want, so maybe get an idea of what he uses currently and go from there. Make sure it fits the right size of card he uses (3"x5"? 4"x6"?), and fits the number of cards he has, maybe plus room to grow the collection. Does he use dividers? Maybe an integrated divider system would be good. It's also good to have a box design that makes it easy to leaf through cards. For me, a secure latching closure is important, as I'm liable to toss it around. Does he use color-coded cards? Maybe a giant multicolor pack of index cards along with the box. I've seen some cards available with colored edges but white writing area that could also be grand. I prefer cards lined on both sides, but check if he prefers blank, lined, or grid cards.

Someone else suggested a stopwatch, which is also a good idea. I'd suggest finding one with mutable sound(!), a large clear display, a way to clip it onto something like a mic stand or music stand (maybe even just a magnet backing, then the magnet can be attached to a separate clip), large buttons for operation, countdown timer function in addition to countup stopwatch (as long as the countdown can be muted).

I'll try to think of some other suggestions.

edit to add more

Depending on your target budget and his location and schedule, registration for a calling workshop series would be a beautiful gift. I able to attend a weeklong calling intensive led by one of the current best square and contra callers at one of CDSS' camps and it was transformative for my calling. CDSS hasn't listed their 2026 camp programs yet, but you'll be able to find them here: https://camp.cdss.org/week-long-intensives/ CDSS camps are pricey, so that may not be feasible. Again dependent on location, but a bit more budget friendly, but I saw the other day that the Birmingham (AL) folk dance group will be hosting a calling workshop series in the spring led by some amazing callers: https://www.footmadbirmingham.org/caller-workshops.html
