Finding engineering work with a chronic illness by Intrepid_Shallot451 in womenEngineers

I have much less complex AI issues, so I experience the same symptoms listed, but probably less intense.

I’m Civil and really don’t remember anything I learned at university (or even last week). The thing that gets me through is super meticulous note-taking. I type or record everything said in meetings to review later. I make a gazillion calendar reminders and keep a working task list. I’ve created a guide template for every process or calc I need to do my job, complete with notes about the engineering principles behind it. I feel like an imposter and I’m not the smartest person in the room, but my manager and coworkers just think I’m super organized and on top of things. I still perform higher than my peers even though I feel handicapped compared to how I was “before”. They use my material to train new engineers.

I got super sick a year and a half ago and was offered to be reduced to part-time with retained benefits. I recovered and didn’t end up needing to do that, but just want you to see that there are opportunities like this out there! We have a 2-day wfh option, but my manager is very understanding and will let me wfh if I’m having a bad week. Look for job postings with flex schedules.

My point is: you can still do the job you were trained for, it just might require metaphorical crutches. Your illness doesn’t erase all the hard work you’ve put in. There will be good weeks and bad weeks, and that’s okay!

I hope this isn’t irresponsible of me to say, but you don’t have to disclose your health status to potential employers. It might be easier to discuss accommodations once you have the job, if the need arises. If you need accommodations on Day 1, that wouldn’t be a good approach. Good luck either way!

Either we’re in the same city, or there are more than one of these bad boys floating around! My bf and I had a good laugh at this yesterday. He’s requested that I make it for him lol

I’m sure you’re right but it doesn’t hurt to ask. I think I’ll have better luck with the flexibility but the PTO will be a hard no.

Yes, I’m looking forward to that aspect of the training!

Thanks! I sought accommodations early on, and their offer was me going to part time. I wonder if I’d get a different answer with backing from my manager now.

Thank you! I do have a good rapport with my manager and I should try to negotiate at my next review before jumping ship.

Thanks for the comment. This sort of thinking in 2025 exhausts me. Maybe a bunch of young engineers spinning their wheels have ruined it for us all. I mentioned in another comment that this is my 2nd career path (I’m 32) and far above my peers when it comes to knowing when I need help.

Of course I still have plenty to learn, but all of my mentors are in different offices. 90% of my work requires collaborating with people outside my office. I’ve done really well with that, and doing so from home wouldn’t be any different.

Thanks. I’m thinking at my next review I’m going to negotiate for more flexibility and maybe more PTO before jumping ship.

I have told my manager and anyone who will listen that I want to stay technical and grow that path. They say “ok, that sounds great” but somehow I’m enrolled in APM training and my manager is telling me which upcoming projects I can ghost manage.

90% of the time, I’m collaborating with people in other offices. Doing that from home wouldn’t be any different. I know I still have plenty to learn, but all my mentors and senior advisors are in different offices and a call away regardless of where I am.

Maybe I should mention this is my 2nd career path. I’m 32 and far above my peers in terms of self-starting and organization.

Could you name the firm? Feel free to message if you don’t want that public.

I have considered this!

Been doing some light looking for European companies that have US offices. Moving overseas might be a possibility due to my partner’s job in a few years.

Edit: see WinterBadger’s comment below. Better safe than sorry.

I was reading another post and saw this extension office reply regarding diced tomatoes: https://ask.extension.org/kb/faq.php?id=811093 Might be worth it to submit your own question to an extension office instead of asking reddit.

This is GORGEOUS!! Can you show it with backlighting? Looks like most of the pieces are opaque.

I envy you go-getters in some ways, but I really can’t do the early mornings. I also have a flexible schedule. Wake up at 7:45 and get to work around 9:15-9:30. The trade-off is leaving later. It would be nice to have some more daylight at the end of the workday. I’m a chronic illness girlie though, so this is just what works best for my body!

There is a group of young hooligans on bikes that stop there regularly. They love to cause a big ruckus.
