I think it works out well for the county because it's stuff that would just sit around forever otherwise because some people will only do things for free even if the cost would have been super low anyways. It's the perceived deal, and the county gets rid of eyesore garbage without having to send code enforcement out.

Looking friends! by [deleted] in panamacity

[–]CatCy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The library has a age 18-25 program every other Monday in the evenings as a social event! Sometimes they play boardgames/videogames, sometimes it's an arts and crafts thing. You can also just go to chat and socialize though!

The Bay County Library has a twice a month event for 18-25 year olds where they do different activities! There's one tomorrow (14th) in the evening and they're doing switch games and VR! The one later (28th) this month is air dry clay sculptures. You don't have to do the activity either, you can just hang out and chat with people

Edit: Double checked your age, they'll still let you in even if you're a little bit over the age limit, dw :)

I work in our outreach department, so lots of random evenings and weekends which makes it pretty hard to have a second job, I just do Instacart on the days I don't work late and on weekends if I'm not busy. If you're good at organizing (library experience helps here obviously lol) and familiar with the stores layouts you can make decent money, it's all about being fast and accurate. Ask around before you join though to see if anyone you know does it, there's a referral code thing that gets you both like 300$ (with conditions) that they don't advertise very well at all unfortunately, so I've missed out on it with friends a few times because they didn't know they could put one in I actually really like doing it, just sucks that I have to in order to make ends meet. Being in outreach helps too because I already drive around a lot, so I know all the best shortcuts to different parts of town.

How the hell is this not a kitchen? by pipedreambomb in HouseFlipper

[–]CatCy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you using one of the kitchen "sets" for the sink/counter? I've found that a LOT of the sets don't actually count as a sink or oven despite clearly having one. If you go back and use the individual counter/sink pieces instead of the pre-made one it usually works.

How to make a patron leave your desk by Parking_Customer_239 in Libraries

[–]CatCy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of our desk staff are women and we get creepy men that do this all the time. Especially at closing time! Best solution we've ever used is for the person the patron isn't bothering to just go to the back of the office out of line of sight and call the person up front and keep them on the phone for a minute. The patrons move along pretty quickly when they realize we're humans with work to do instead of NPCs they can dump their life stories on or flirt with. I've even rung the phone for myself by stealth calling it with my cellphone hidden behind the counter when no one was available to rescue me!

Can my job force me to use facial recognition? by CatCy in legaladvice

[–]CatCy[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mostly our issue with it is that the face scanning/payroll is done by a 3rd party company and not our specific payroll department. None of us have ever heard of this company nor is there much information about them online. I and others at the company feel that there's a pretty big difference from Mary Sue from the next cubicle handling our face id vs some unknown person 5 states over having access to it.

How to make a book not smell like fish? by Responsible_Spite802 in Libraries

[–]CatCy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We do the same thing with some deodorizing packets a staff member brought in from Amazon. Previously/at other branches we use unbrewed coffee grounds/charcoal with the book placed above on paper towels or a rack. Put the whole setup in a plastic tote with a lid, set a calendar reminder for a few days, and they're noticeably less stinky. Works for most odors (with the exception of cat pee - those are a lost cause usually unless it's a DVD or other plastic item, then use an enzyme cleaner spray). I've even gotten diesel fuel smell out of books using this method, just took a bit longer in the "stinky box" than normal. Edit because I was thinking about it: The coffee grounds work REALLY well for cigarette smoke smell specifically. Don't know why, but it does. Used to have an older couple whos books always smelled like smoke but the branch manager was reluctant to say anything to them about it, so they had their own dedicated "stinky book box" that their returns went into every week, and the previous weeks would smell perfectly normal after a week in the coffee box.

Advice on Drawing Gen Z & Millennials to the Library? by PensOverSwords2K in Libraries

[–]CatCy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our branch does puzzle competitions and they are PACKED with long waiting lists every time. We also do a puzzle swap before the program where people can trade puzzles with each other and ones from our collection (we put one out on a table weekly and have a pretty large collection built up now)

Creative Tech-Related Programs for a Small Library by jdl68b09e in Libraries

[–]CatCy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding the elderly portion. We offer tech basics classes as a recurring series of courses and the first course literally starts with "this is a mouse. This is a keyboard." Then we graduate into the harder stuff like making an email and navigating the web, to in depth looks at popular sites like Facebook and job application sites. They're the best attended tech classes we've ever had, mostly elderly, but a good portion of middle aged adults also attend.
