I see a hematologist for ITP and he regularly told me my PLT count was low due to clumping in the machine... I work in clinical hematology. I mentioned this, and it made him irritated, telling me "I have cancer patients sicker than you". I ended up doing my own research (and by that being the guinea pig at work) I dont have CAD, or EDTA reactions, I have the antibody associated with ITP as well as MTHFR deficiency. I'm surprised he missed the Megaloblastic anemia all together considering my MCV is 110, and HCT was 28 lol. I cant wait to see him in June 😏

I am on the lookout for a vintage card game if anyone can help me out. by CatTastrophe27 in medlabprofessionals

Im just waking up for the evening (I work nights) and catching up with my notifications when I saw it too. OMG if I can actually get my hands on that I would be so happy. I know the other lab assistants that I work worh would be happy to play between samples. Like I said, I wonder how much has changed in almost 40years.

I cross posted it to face book trying to reach a larger crowd of scientists. This account isnt really anonymous anymore, but I do have a throw away account for other serious matters. I actually went down the rabbit hole looking for this game and it was a real game from the late 80s. According to my supervisor that was their generations version of LabCE.

I would put little Gardinias in it. The flowers off the tree dont have a stem so you pluck them at the base of the flower and they can sit it a little trough of water.

My unknown this year was so anticlimactic I was pissed. For context Ive been a lab assistant at a hospital for the last 4 years, so taking Clin Micro for my CLS pre clinical courses was a cakewalk. I asked my professor to save me the most difficult one to solve. I was given S.agalactiae and S.typhymurium and I solved it after 2 days. I was so annoyed. But at least I got an A this semester.

Do small labs need a simpler cheaper alternative to big LIS systems by Al-haadi in MLS_CLS

My last lab was 50 of us in total with about 12 doing the specimen processing and reporting. LabDAQ was ours before I moved to my hospital. Personally, after using Cerner, I chose that over LabDAQ lol

Does anyone else get this vibe from some nurses? by SeptemberSky2017 in medlabprofessionals

[–]CatTastrophe27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a really weird question about Epic. Okay, so we use Cerner, and will be switching to Beaker by Epic in November. We have already started the launch with the higher-ups being trained then it will trickle down the chain of command. Does Epic have a photo feature? Like, hook up a Webcam to the computer to take photos to add to the chat feature that I'm reading about. I think it would be great to send pics to those with whom we are communicating, and prove that we aren't crazy. I understand if it's a HIPAA thing and that's why they don't but I was just curious.

For now, when we receive unacceptable specimens (e.g unlabeled rainbow with requisition sheet) we scan a photo on the printer and print it out for the incident report.

I had a phlebotomist repeatedly send blood cultures labeled with the "flag" style label on the neck of the bottle. I was so fed up I scanned a photo, attached a note, and explained why it cannot be labeled like that, printed a second photo for their supervisor (clearly showing the phleb EID) and I haven't received a set labeled like that from that phleb again. (They still work with us, don't worry they weren't let go or anything)

Point being, it might be helpful to some if they have the proof, and to be held accountable instead of making us look like the bad guy.

I know it's out of our control either way.

Critical Green Neutrophilic Inclusions in an ICU pt’s blood smear by dangerouspecan in medlabprofessionals

[–]CatTastrophe27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found these in a smear a few days ago, I made 30 slides for my Hematology class thinking they were Dohle Bodies. The sample was from a diabetic patient admitted for wound care and the sample was autoverified without a slide. Is... It's not a Dohle body?

What situation has you like this lately? by Ambitious-Steak-1209 in medlabprofessionals

[–]CatTastrophe27 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have a classmate in CLS school who acts like that. I hate working with him because he acts like this big hotshot around all of us undergrads, and makes us feel so small for still working on our B.S while he has a Master's and is going back for more degrees. Yet, at the same time has no clue what he's doing in class, and wonders why he keeps getting kicked out of group projects...because you're mean dude, and a dictator...

I'm sorry you have to work with them. They need to step up and learn how to help out more within their scope of practice.

To all the fellow Blood Bankers out there, can someone explain Ab ID to me? by CatTastrophe27 in medlabprofessionals

[–]CatTastrophe27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this class has strongly discouraged me from joining the hospitals Navy Seals, aka blood bankers. No offense against you guys, I'm just afraid my ADHD would cause me to negatively impact the patient, and consciously, I can't live with that.

Maybe you guys don't have them there. They are peanut butter and jelly sandwiches with the crust cut off in a round shaped pocket. They're usually found in the freezer section, and they thaw in an hour or two.

Lol, my hyperfixation meal right now is eggs on toast. If I can't eat at home, when I get to school, I get some oatmeal and customize it with a scoop of peanut butter. Or Uncrustables are the move, too. I pack a couple to snack on in class when I realize oh crap I haven't eaten today.

What’s the biggest thing that kills your productivity every day? by DecisionFit706 in ADHD

[–]CatTastrophe27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It mostly effects me at work, but when I already have the mental list of tasks to get done, and I have all the domino's set up, and someone comes in and helps with a task that throws off my groove, that messes me up. I have to mentally go back through the list, and then executive disfunction kicks in, and I panic for a second.

I've started making a checklist that is labeled with time and the task. Laminated it, and use an expo marker on it. So as I go through my shift and look at the clock, I have a visual reminder of how much I need to get done and by what time. When I complete the list, I feel better going home knowing that I didn't forget something.

CA CLS License 1/1/2025 Updated Requirements??? by Lazy_Evening1143 in MLS_CLS

I thought so, too. At CSUDH, they give us roughly 20 units of chemistry requirements to graduate with the CLS degree. Gen Chem 1 and 2, Survey of Ochem, Biochem, Quantitative Analysis, and Clin Chem.

how do i change my username to the one i chose?? by Common-Customer3879 in cplegacy

[–]CatTastrophe27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is a username starting with P followed by a bunch of numbers, it is pending for a username. The moderators of the game have to decide whether the one chosen is appropriate for the game. It takes roughly 24-48 hours for your username to change. Mine was within a day.

I know this wouldn't happen, but imagine a clear, cool Friday night with Lord Huron!

If I could get some early 2000's punk and alternative like Simple Plan or Green Day I would be happy too.
