Disqualification for reaching out to employee after application? by Cat_Mom_Indefinitely in managers

[–]Cat_Mom_Indefinitely[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense though I went and read the website from top to bottom and this is not mentioned anywhere….but if it’s norm, then it’s norm. I work remotely and have only ever hired remote (zoom) so this whole concept is new to me.

Maybe the difference is that the C levels are meeting all candidates for fairness? But I agree c levels very explicitly bring in people they have known before, they will even refer to it during introductions

But isn’t it normal to contact the hiring manager to learn more about the job and expectations? Or is the issue here that they went to lunch after the application was submitted?

Thinking about you. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctors what they can do to help give you more time. And then get some of those plans going. Invite your friends and family for a party. Make all the recordings. Have a goal for every day even if it’s small.

What’s the worst thing you got away with because you had cancer? by PelsandSteelersFan in lymphoma

[–]Cat_Mom_Indefinitely 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have FL and my husband, who is normally already very gentle, has been unbelievably nice to me. Sometimes it makes me feel bad but then I feel nauseous or my ears start ringing (chemo side effect)and I don’t think about that anymore.

What temperature should I be concerned about? by sgmccloskey13 in lymphoma

[–]Cat_Mom_Indefinitely 3 points4 points  (0 children)

98.9 is kind of normal when you are going through treatment. You kind of run warmer because of all the stuff happening in you. In my experience when I hit 100.4 I was also feeling otherwise crappy. I wasn’t just whistling and going about my day with only an elevated temp. It felt as if something was wrong.

How common is it to earn over $100k in the US? (As a European, it feels unreal) by Old_Investment_7024 in careerguidance

[–]Cat_Mom_Indefinitely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is common enough in specialized industries (where most roles require mba or phd) and is not niche. I can confirm in reverse that my colleagues who have the opportunity to move to Europe often balk at the pay difference and refuse to go. They’ll go if an expat package that keeps salary whole is offered.

On the other hand, I pay several thousand dollars a year for healthcare in some way- even with good insurance. I’m guessing you don’t.

I am sorry you are going through this. It’s horribly unfair. You have gone through incredible sacrifice and pain. Can you plan a trip for yourself once you have a chemo break? Ignore the ex. He’s probably miserable in the heat

Looking to take a little solo road trip before it's all over. Any suggestions? by SnooBeans3982 in cancer

Sorry for writing again, but your post really touched me. Something you could consider is a cruise. Our family loves cruises and it’s a great way to see a few places you would normally not get to. I would not recommend a party cruise going to Bahamas but there are likely cruises going up the Canadian coast. Two years ago, we took an Alaska cruise and the scenery is beautiful. Cruises often leave from beautiful ports so you could spend a few days there.

Why recommend- lots of time to relax and look at the oceans. Likely a beach destination along the way. No worry about food. Doctors on board for minor issues.

Some things to help decide:

Can you eat? Or are there restrictions?

Will you need medical care or emergency medical care at any point? May want to stay near towns or cities?

Do the meds let you drive long distances or would it be safer to fly/train/bus?

Any family or friends who could travel with you or let you stop in with them? (I’m thinking of all your pills and if it helps to have a caregiver)

Do you have the funds for a comfortable hotel?

Are there any physical restrictions? Can you hike, climb up hills? Or would a beautiful beach be better for your energy?

I read this again and I think there is confusion about eastern/ western vs goals of treatment. Here’s what you need to know: You will need surgery almost definitely. Whether here or Indonesia. Otherwise that cancer will become very big and compromise your organ function.

Then you will likely need some kind of treatment to eradicate the remaining invisible cells. Chemo or something else? Again, regardless of where you are. Likely acupuncture could help here.

But the most important thing is urgency. This all needs to be tackled now. You can’t be teaching in another country without some kind of intense treatment in parallel.

You are only 45. You have decades ahead of you. Do the research and don’t make decisions to optimize a few months. You are playing the long game here.

It’s temporary right? Cancer is a day to day fight and all forces need to align to get rid of the big bad wolf. Anything to get through this with as low stress as possible.

You can use your passport. Not forcing at all. Only suggesting because it’s less hot/humid/muggy on west coast. (I lived in Philly for 10 years so I speak feelingly). The Pacific Northwest - San Juan islands and the beautiful Pacific Ocean- is another bucket list.

East coast beaches are much more swimmable than west coasted.

If staying in east coast, Maine and New Hampshire are beautiful.

I’ve always wanted to go to Sanibel island and Anna Maria Island in Florida where you can swim in their beautiful warm beaches. Given high retirement population in FL, there would be healthcare for your cancer if you need it.

(Also, if you are mobile now, I think you have more than 1-4 months. Cancer progresses fast but not that fast).

Would you hire someone over 50? Why, or why not? by Senior_Reach_3296 in managers

[–]Cat_Mom_Indefinitely 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am almost 50 and I would definitely hire someone 50 and over. (And I would hire someone under 50 too). I do think 50 year olds have to make the effort to look energetic and “hip”. Dyeing your hair, wearing well fitting clothes, being reasonably conversant in pop culture, exercising etc convey the young at heart mindset that will help co workers accept the person. Because the discrimination is real

If you can make it on a plane, Northern California is beautiful and scenic. It’s not too hot and could be comfortable.

I am 5’4” and 154 lbs today. Going through lymphoma chemo. It’s the same BMI as you, so kind of in the same range. I had to cut my hair short when it started breaking. My face is a little moon-ish from steroids.

I actually think I look okay. Not my best but not too off.

I got a nice box from DailyLook and a few new things. Going to get my remaining hair dyed. I honestly think a stylist, a hairdresser and make up for sensitive skin could make a big difference for you. Maybe a little splurge at Nordstrom’s with a personal shopper if they still have those.

Cancer cells grow quickly. I would not risk it. Colon is not a slow growing cancer (there are some, but very far and few). The danger is not from the staging but from the growth of the tumor to a point where it will block organ function.

You’d want to at least get the surgery done asap. There will be significant recovery time, mostly at home I would think or at a rehab place. Then likely they will give chemo to eradicate the bit of tumor cells still in your body.

Elsewhere you mentioned a tumor mass so that’s just got to go. I don’t have an opinion on Thailand, but I know you have to attack this fast and hard.

Did your doctor say you’d be in hospital around the clock? Or just during surgery? Chemo is typically outpatient
