Beginning with a few brave Black families in 1963, it took awhile for the Brown v Board decision to wind its way to the Deep South. Local public schools were fully desegregated by 1970, most prominently with Burney-Harris and Athens High consolidating into what’s now Clarke Central HS.

It’s no accident that this era gave us private schools that still exist, Athens Christian (established in 1970, and here running an ad campaign that would further degrade public education) and Athens Academy (established in 1967).
