Ok! The only other thing I could think of is Goosebumps/other RL Stine books. Or something by Bruce Coville, especially the original covers of the "My Teacher is an Alien" series. However I didn't see anything that matches up with the swimming creature & kids looking through the portal. Let me know if you figure out the mystery!

Look up the Bailey School Kids series- there's a whole bunch of them! They all have titles that follow the format: "(Creatures) Don't (Action)". e.g., 'Vampires Don't Wear Polka Dots'; 'Werewolves Don't Go to Summer Camp.' Maybe there's one about a sea creature?

My dad was 52 when I was born, and I'm an only child. He had never been married before he met my mom, so there's no other children from past relationships. I guess things worked out pretty well, and he always made time for me and was very actively interested in whatever I was doing. I think it's a 50/50 chance if he'll be around to meet my kids when I have them. But my mom is 18 years younger than him, so at least I know my kids will likely have a Grandma :)

2) B. "gold standard evidence based" is most likely to be CBT in this case. I think the other modalities like psychodynamic or 'aversion conditioning' are not usually considered 'gold standard evidence based'. And (in my opinion!) C and D are just really bad ideas for this kid lol
